Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are extreme biological events representing a major issue in marine, brackish, and freshwater systems worldwide. Their proliferation is certainly a problem from both ecological and socioeconomic contexts, as harmful algae can affect human health and activities, the marine ecosystem functioning, and the economy of coastal areas. Once HABs establish, valuable and environmentally friendly control actions are needed to reduce their negative impacts. In this study, the influence exerted by the filter-feeding activity of the two sabellid polychaetes Branchiomma luctuosum (Grube) and Sabella spallanzanii (Gmelin) on a harmful dinoflagellate was investigated. Clearance rates (C) and retention efficiencies were estimated by employing the microalga Amphidinium carterae Hulburt. The Cmax was 1.15 ± 0.204 L h−1 g−1 DW for B. luctuosum and 0.936 ± 0.151 L h−1 g−1 DW for S. spallanzanii. The retention efficiency was 72% for B. luctuosum and 68% for S. spallanzanii. Maximum retention was recorded after 30 min for both species. The obtained results contribute to the knowledge of the two polychaetes’ filtration activity and to characterize the filtration process on harmful microalgae in light of the protection of water resources and human health. Both species, indeed, were extremely efficient in removing A. carterae from seawater, thus suggesting their employment as a new tool in mitigation technologies for the control of harmful algae in marine environments, as well as in the aquaculture facilities where HABs are one of the most critical threats.

A rapid and cost-effective system is vital for the detection of harmful algae that causes environmental problems in terms of water quality. The approach for algae detection was to capture images based on hyperspectral fluorescence imaging microscope by detecting specific fluorescence signatures. With the high degree of overlapping spectra of algae, the distribution of pigment in the region of interest was unknown according to a previous report. We propose an optimization method of multivariate curve resolution (MCR) to improve the performance of pigment analysis. The reconstruction image described location and concentration of the microalgae pigments. This result indicated the cyanobacterial pigment distribution and mapped the relative pigment content. In conclusion, with the advantage of acquiring two-dimensional images across a range of spectra, HSI conjoining spectral features with spatial information efficiently estimated specific features of harmful microalgae in MCR models.

AbstractDerelict abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear have profound adverse effects. We assessed gear-specific relative risks from derelict gear to rank-order fishing methods based on: derelict gear production rates, gear quantity indicators of catch weight and fishing grounds area, and adverse consequences from derelict gear. The latter accounted for ghost fishing, transfer of microplastics and toxins into food webs, spread of invasive alien species and harmful microalgae, habitat degradation, obstruction of navigation and in-use fishing gear, and coastal socioeconomic impacts. Globally, mitigating highest risk derelict gear from gillnet, tuna purse seine with fish aggregating devices, and bottom trawl fisheries achieves maximum conservation gains. Locally, adopting controls following a sequential mitigation hierarchy and implementing effective monitoring, surveillance and enforcement systems are needed to curb derelict gear from these most problematic fisheries. Primary and synthesis research are priorities to improve future risk assessments, produce the first robust estimate of global derelict gear quantity, and assess the performance of initiatives to manage derelict gear. Findings from this first quantitative estimate of gear-specific relative risks from derelict gear guide the allocation of resources to achieve the largest improvements from mitigating adverse effects of derelict gear from the world’s 4.6 million fishing vessels.

The multiplication of harmful microalgae in bivalve mollusc fishingregions is a problem that has repercussions for both fishermenand for the economy of the affected region, as these microalgaeproduce toxins that affect humans, ranging from gastrointestinalproblems to, in more extreme cases, cancer that can lead to thedeath of the consumer. Currently, in Santa Catarina, the water isanalyzed to identify the presence of toxins by the Integrated Companyof Agricultural Development of Santa Catarina (CIDASC). Thepresence of toxins in the water creates a temporary embargo onthe sale of mollusks. This embargo usually produces great loss inthe bivalve mollusc culture as far as all the production needs do bediscarded. This work creates a sample collection system that canbe performed by growers rather than experts for the acquisition ofthose samples. These work aims to create an easy-to-use systemenabling the mariculturist to sample water. The purposed processallows the acceleration of the sample collection and analysys. Themanual process needs an expert to come to the field, collect samples,document the samples and take to the lab to analyze. In thisstudy we created an embedded system for sample collection thatautomated the collect field data and link to a image collected bya portable microscope and when a wifi connection is detected itsends the sample to a data server.

Phalacroma rotundatum is a rare cosmopolitan heterotrophic dinoflagellate. This species, included in the IOC-UNESCO Taxonomic Reference List of Harmful Microalgae, may be a diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxin vector, but little is known about its ecophysiology and behavior. A vertical net haul collected during the austral summer of 2018 in Reloncaví Sound (Chilean Patagonia) revealed an unusually abundant population of P. rotundatum and prompted intensive 24 h sampling on 16–17 January to study the cell cycle and feeding behavior of this species. Hydrographic measurements from a buoy revealed the local characteristic estuarine circulation, with a brackish surface layer (salinity 26–28) separated from saltier, colder bottom waters by a pycnocline at a depth modulated by the tidal regime. A high proportion of P. rotundatum cells were packed with digestive vacuoles (peak of 70% at 14:00), and phased cell division (µ = 0.46 d−1) occurred 3 h after sunrise. The division time (TD) was 2 h. This is the first cell cycle study of P. rotundatum. The results here disagree with those of previous field studies that considered asynchronous division in some Dinophysis species to be related to heterotrophic feeding. They also question the very specific prey requirements, Tiarina fusus, reported for P. rotundatum in northern Europe.
