AbstractDerelict abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear have profound adverse effects. We assessed gear-specific relative risks from derelict gear to rank-order fishing methods based on: derelict gear production rates, gear quantity indicators of catch weight and fishing grounds area, and adverse consequences from derelict gear. The latter accounted for ghost fishing, transfer of microplastics and toxins into food webs, spread of invasive alien species and harmful microalgae, habitat degradation, obstruction of navigation and in-use fishing gear, and coastal socioeconomic impacts. Globally, mitigating highest risk derelict gear from gillnet, tuna purse seine with fish aggregating devices, and bottom trawl fisheries achieves maximum conservation gains. Locally, adopting controls following a sequential mitigation hierarchy and implementing effective monitoring, surveillance and enforcement systems are needed to curb derelict gear from these most problematic fisheries. Primary and synthesis research are priorities to improve future risk assessments, produce the first robust estimate of global derelict gear quantity, and assess the performance of initiatives to manage derelict gear. Findings from this first quantitative estimate of gear-specific relative risks from derelict gear guide the allocation of resources to achieve the largest improvements from mitigating adverse effects of derelict gear from the world’s 4.6 million fishing vessels.

Observers from the Australian Fisheries Management Authority worked on randomly chosen Japanese long-line vessels in the Australian Fishing Zone (AFZ) between 1980 and 1997. Observer reports (n = 451) were inspected for interactions or sightings of marine mammals. An operational interaction was defined as an activity or behaviour that involved direct contact between a marine mammal and fishing gear, bait, target fish or bycatch, or indications that the marine mammal was feeding. A sighting was defined as the recording of marine mammals that passed the vessel without changing course and/or did not appear to interact with the vessel or its gear. Observers witnessed 23 interactions and made another 44 sightings of marine mammals. A further 24 interactions and sightings were relayed by crew members. Killer whales were reported most frequently: most incidences of fish being damaged, taken or frightened away were attributed to them. Eleven marine mammals were caught: two died, seven were released, and the fate of two others was not recorded. Between 1991 and 1996, when observer coverage was 11.5% overall in the AFZ, the incidence of interactions was 1.71 per million hooks set. The estimated number of interactions in that seven-year period was 157 in the AFZ. Since 1997, the long-line fishery has been conducted by Australian vessels, primarily off the east coast of mainland Australia in warm-temperate waters. A higher proportion of interactions can be expected with killer whales and short-finned pilot whales in these waters, and fewer with seals.

Abstract The fishing industry is recognized as one of the primary sources of at-sea marine litter, largely through its contributions via abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG). Individual fleet’s contributions to ALDFG vary significantly across this global industry. While much information is available for some fisheries, the rate of ALDFG remains poorly known for many techniques. In this study, we used data collected by fisheries observers onboard pole-and-line fishing vessels in the Azores (Atlantic Ocean) and the Maldives (Indian Ocean) to provide an accurate and representative estimate of ALDFG for this gear. Our analysis of 993 fishing events demonstrated ALDFG contributions much lower than have been recorded for any other commercial tuna fishing gear. Overall, we found that an angler loses some monofilament line in 1.4% (±0.2) of fishing events. This informs that for every thousand tonnes of tuna harvested using this fishing technique, 0.3 kg of nylon is entering the marine environment. Globally, we estimate that all pole-and-line fisheries together contribute to 96 kg ± 42.6 kg of ALDFG per year. These results further evidence the low environmental impact of this traditional fishing practice, as well as the need for other methods to convert to less damaging gears.

Anchovy fishery has grown rapidly, especially in the northern waters of Java-Madura in the last year. The study on the characteristics of the anchovy fishery (Engraulidae) along the northern coast of Java-Madura was carried out in 2017-2018, covering the distribution of fisheries effort, types of fishing gear, operational aspects of fishing, catch-abundance and fishing season. The collection of anchovy landing data was carried out through a survey at 11 fish landing sites. The results showed that there were 12 main anchovy landing sites along the north coast (pantura) of Java and Madura. Two types of dominant fishing gear used for anchovies are purse seine and payang; Fisheries are small-scale, undertaking daily trips, with a fleet of fishing vessels under 20 GT. The nets generally use “waring” with small mesh (3/8 inch) in the codend. Fishing area in shallow coastal waters, close to the fishing base. The fishing season for anchovy varies, in the western region (Pulolampes, Larangan, Morodemak) it takes place around the east / southeast season (May-July), while in the eastern region it takes place at the beginning of the eastern season and lasts quite a long time until November (transition season 2) . The catch per unit effort (CPUE, as an abundance index) is thought to be getting lower eastward but accompanied by a longer fishing season.

The traditional fish aggregating devices (FADs) have been assist fishing gear i.e. surface gill nets and hand lines to catching pelagic fish. The traditional FADs have been used by partners of fishermen in Aceh Jaya District and that is increased operational/maintenance costs and decreased fishermen's profits. In addition, areca leaves or coconut leaves are increasingly difficult to obtain. Therefore, the palm fiber FAD technology is expected to be able to increase fishermen's income and satisfaction for community who catch fish for fishing recreation or fishing sport. The approach to solving problems was carried out with education, training and mentoring. This community partnership program (PKM) activity was carried out from January to March 2020. The output of PKM activities is to increasing knowledge and skills for fishing communities. In addition, applied of palm fiber FADs can be better than traditional FADs and can be effect to fisherman’s income of recreational fisheries.

The use of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) has radically changing the tactic and strategy shallow waters small pelagic purse seiner into high seas tropical neritics tuna fisheries. Applying FADs on purse seine fishery which initiated to increase its productivity became a serious problem to neritics<br />tuna fishery. This indicated by the negative impact on neritics and tropical tuna populations due to large number of small size of tunas being caught and uncertain of number and of FADS position in the high seas. In the long run it will generate a potential conflict to other existing fisheries. The member scientists of regional fisheries management organization (RFMO) recommends that the development of the use of FADs, especially in the area which dominated of juvenile of tropical tuna, should be strongly regulated. FADs management through control system should be applied to minimize impact on recruitment process that associated with the importance of long term availability of its fisheries. Management option through shifting target species and diversification of the fishing activities in<br />Indonesia would always be rely on social dimension. Nevertheles, reorientation on fishers understanding on controllable number of fishing vessels and its technological creeps should strongly be implemented to avoid collapse their existing fisheries.</p>

SummaryParasuicide admissions to the Regional Poisoning Treatment Centre in Edinburgh are reviewed over the seven year period 1968–74. Special emphasis is given to trends in parasuicide rates for Edinburgh City, but social and clinical data are also described. Though the mean annual increase for admissions is 10 · 6 per cent, recent years have shown a fall in the rates for men and a levelling off for women. There have been increases in the rates for the young, for men in social classes 4 and 5 and for divorced women, and in poisonings with psychotropic drugs and alcohol consumption among women. At the same time it is important to note variables which have not changed: the relative risks by age and sex, repetition rates, the diagnostic picture, poisoning with non-prescribed drugs, and the rank order of municipal ward rates: and variables which have diminished: the rates for divorced men, overcrowding, domestic gas and barbiturate poisoning, and drug misuse. A comprehensive explanation of parasuicide in the contemporary scene would have to explain both the consistencies and the changing trends. The answer to the central question of why parasuicide is changing remains elusive.

Abstract Gerritsen, H. D., Minto, C., and Lordan, C. 2013. How much of the seabed is impacted by mobile fishing gear? Absolute estimates from Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) point data. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70: 523–531. Demersal trawling impacts extensively on the seabed, and the extent and frequency of this impact can be assessed using Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data (positional data of fishing vessels). Existing approaches interpolate fishing tracks from consecutive VMS locations (track interpolation) and/or aggregate VMS point data in a spatial grid (point summation). Track interpolation can be quite inaccurate with the current 2-hour time interval between VMS records, leading to biased estimates. Point summation approaches currently only produce relative estimates of impact and are highly sensitive to the grid size chosen. We propose an approach that provides absolute estimates of trawling impact from point data and is not sensitive to an arbitrary choice of grid-cell size. The method involves applying a nested grid and estimating the swept area (area covered by fishing gear) for each VMS point. We show that the ratio of the swept area to the surface area of a cell can be related to the proportion of the seabed that was impacted by the gear a given number of times. We validate the accuracy of this swept-area ratio approach using known vessel tracks and apply the method to international VMS data in the Celtic Sea.

Fishing with the use of purse seines is the most common in the world after trawl fishing. The processes of pursing and seine sampling can significantly affect the stability of a fishing vessel (seiner). In this paper, the influence of forces acting from the fishing gear on the roll angle is considered. The calculation algorithm is given, taking into account the coordinates of the point of application of the tension force of the cable going to the fishing gear, the angles of inclination of the cable, the magnitude of the force. Calculated dependences for roll processes are compiled, expressions for the angle of inclination of the vessel's hull are obtained. Examples of calculations are given. In particular, the change in the roll angle from the traction force, the lifting height of the snatch–block for a fishing vessel is considered. The calculations carried out indicate sufficient accuracy for engineering calculations and the possibility of using the above algorithm for evaluation calculations at various stages of design. It is important to take into account the possibility of simultaneous imposition of wind loads, the action of waves on the hull of the vessel. In these cases, the roll and trim will increase. Therefore, the specifics of fishing vessels is the need to take into account the behavior of the vessel during fishing operations.

Kendari fishing port is one of the biggest tuna fisheries landing in Indonesia. It yearly average tuna production was more than 20 thousand tons. The tuna fishing fleet in Kendari use FAD (Fish Aggregating Devices) as an auxiliary fishing gear. FAD management is major issues in Indonesian tuna fisheries. extensive investment on FAD has led to increase of the juvenile and by catch and also social problem because of the competition. Technical efficiency analysis was done during this study, 2015 catch and logistic data from Kendari fishing port was run using stochastic frontier to obtain the model. Mean value technical efficiency was 0.534. Purse seine the highest mean value compared to other fishing gear. All the variables input show positive relationship to the catch except the days at sea variables, this is a signal that the increasing number of FAD has made the fisherman spend more time at sea it will decrease the technical efficiency. The results support the need of FAD regulation done by the government of Indonesia. Regulation will keep the number of FAD at optimum level and increase the technical effieciency so the fisheries keep gaining the optimum benefit from the resources.
