To understand the force acting on birds, insects, and fish, we take heaving motion as a simple example. This motion might deviate from the real one. However, since the mechanism of force generation is the vortex shedding due to the motion of an object, the heaving motion is important for understanding the force generated by unsteady motion. The vortices released from the object are closely related to the motion characteristics. To understand the force acting on an object, information about momentum change is necessary. However, in vortex systems, it is impossible to estimate the usual momentum. Instead of the momentum, the “virtual momentum,” or the impulse, is needed to generate the force. For calculating the virtual momentum, we traced all vortices over a whole period, which was carried out by using the vortex-element method. The force was then calculated based on the information on the vortices. We derived the thrust coefficient as a function of the ratio of the heaving to travelling velocity.

A schematic diagram of a RoF radio-optic system with vortex signals is presented, in which the radio frequency is determined by the difference between the wavelengths of two lasers. It is assumed that the generation of a vortex signal can be performed through a vortex fiber-optic periodic structure, which can be obtained using a technology similar to the manufacture of long-period fiber Bragg gratings. The parameters of the grating are modeled assuming that the fundamental light-guide mode (LP01) is applied to the specified vortex element, and the higher-order mode (LP11) is reflected. It was found that the distortion of the vortex signal can be reduced by introducing apodization and chirping of this periodic structure. The following optimal parameters have been estimated: the apodization and chirp multiplier functions, at which the distortions of the amplitude and phase of the vortex signal, as well as the appearance of an unwanted angle distortion, will be minimal. It is shown that such gratings can be exploited in addressed sensors systems using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a lightwave as a unique sensor address.

The purpose of this study was to implement a software package that allows non-stationary aerodynamic computations of fixed rotation bodies using the vortex element method. In the course of the work, we developed an algorithm for rigid rotation bodies aerodynamic computations by means of this method. Furthermore, we studied the influence of calculation parameters on the results obtained.

We investigate the motion of a thin vortex filament in the presence of buoyancy. The asymptotic model of Moore & Saffman (Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond.A, vol. 272, 1972, pp. 403–429) is extended to take account of buoyancy forces in the force balance on a vortex element. The motion of a buoyant vortex is given by the transverse component of force balance, while the tangential component governs the dynamics of the structure in the core. We show that the local acceleration of axial flow is generated by the external pressure gradient due to gravity. The equations are then solved for vortex rings. An analytic solution for a buoyant vortex ring at a small initial inclination is obtained and asymptotically agrees with the literature.
