Abstract Working with the assumption that properties depend for their instantiation on substances, I argue against a unitary analysis of instantiation. On the standard view, a property is instantiated just in case there is a substance that serves as the bearer of the property. But this view cannot make sense of how properties that are mind-dependent depend for their instantiation on minds. I consider two classes of properties that philosophers often take to be mind-dependent: sensible qualities like color and bodily sensations like itches. Given that the mind is never itself literally red or itchy, we cannot explain the instantiation of these qualities as a matter of their having a mental bearer. Appealing to insights from Berkeley, I defend a view on which a property can be instantiated not in virtue of having a bearer—mental or material—but rather in virtue of being the object of a conscious act of perception. In the second half of the paper, I suggest that the best account of sensible qualities and bodily sensations ultimately makes use of both varieties of instantiation.

AbstractThe mixing of three active neutrino flavors is parameterized by the unitary PMNS matrix. If there are more than three neutrino flavors and if the extra generations are heavy iso-singlets, the effective $$3\times 3$$ 3 × 3 mixing matrix for the three active neutrinos will be non-unitary. We have analyzed the latest T2K and NO$$\nu $$ ν A data with the hypothesis of non-unitary mixing of the active neutrinos. We found that the 2019 NO$$\nu $$ ν A data slightly (at $$\sim 1\, \sigma $$ ∼ 1 σ CL) prefer the non-unitary mixing over unitary mixing. In fact, allowing the non-unitary mixing brings the NO$$\nu $$ ν A best-fit point in the $$\sin ^2{\theta _{23}}-\delta _{\mathrm {CP}}$$ sin 2 θ 23 - δ CP plane closer to the T2K best-fit point. The 2019 T2K data, on the other hand, cannot rule out any of the two mixing schemes. A combined analysis of the NO$$\nu $$ ν A and T2K 2019 data prefers the non-unitary mixing at $$1\, \sigma $$ 1 σ CL. We derive constraints on the non-unitary mixing parameters using the best-fit to the combined NO$$\nu $$ ν A and T2K data. These constraints are weaker than previously found. The latest 2020 data from both the experiments prefer non-unitarity over unitary mixing at $$1\, \sigma $$ 1 σ CL. The combined analysis prefers non-unitarity at $$2\, \sigma $$ 2 σ CL. The stronger tension, which exists between the latest 2020 data of the two experiments, also gets reduced with non-unitary analysis.

This paper constitutes an initial examination of the applicative/causative suffix -ge in Tapus, a divergent traditional Minangkabau variety spoken in rural Western Sumatra. Our aim is to show that the similarities and divergences from Standard Indonesian of traditional rural varieties provides insight into the properties of “Indonesian-type” languages in general. The distribution of applicatives/causatives in Tapus is interesting for several reasons. First, applicative/causative suffixes in Indonesian-type languages are well-known for the use of the same morphology for a variety of purposes. The fact that a single form is used for these different functions raises the question of whether the applicative/causative morphemes are two (or more) distinct morphemes or whether the form has a unitary linguistic function. We will show that the unitary analysis for causative and benefactive uses of the applicative/causative suffix cannot account for the data in Tapus. Another area of interest with regard to this suffix relates to constraints on movement.  We show that the Extreme Locality Hypothesis cannot account for the Tapus data based on the interaction between the applicative/causative suffix and information question formation/relativization. Finally, we demonstrate that Pylkkänen’s typology of applicatives makes incorrect predictions with respect to the interpretations available for benefactives in Tapus and other Indonesian-type languages, showing the necessity for an expanded taxonomy of applicative forms. Our general conclusion is that the detailed examination of grammatical constructions in divergent Malayic varieties leads to new and surprising insights into the grammatical profile of Indonesian-type languages.

AbstractSocial transmission of information is a key phenomenon in the evolution of behavior and in the establishment of traditions and culture. The diversity of social learning phenomena has engendered a diverse terminology and numerous ideas about underlying learning mechanisms, at the same time that some researchers have called for a unitary analysis of social learning in terms of associative processes. Leveraging previous attempts and a recent computational formulation of associative learning, we analyze the following learning scenarios in some generality: learning responses to social stimuli, including learning to imitate; learning responses to non-social stimuli; learning sequences of actions; learning to avoid danger. We conceptualize social learning as situations in which stimuli that arise from other individuals have an important role in learning. This role is supported by genetic predispositions that either cause responses to social stimuli or enable social stimuli to reinforce specific responses. Our explorations show that, when guided by such predispositions, associative processes can give rise to a wide variety of social learning phenomena, such as stimulus and local enhancement, contextual imitation and simple production imitation, observational conditioning, and social and response facilitation. In addition, we clarify how associative mechanisms can result in transfer of information and behavior from experienced to naïve individuals.

Combined with one specific engineering example, in which the novelty and complexity of the bridge has to be taken into account, a complex spatial simulation model including beam, plate, and solid elements is established by the application of MIDAS/Civil2006, then its internal force is calculated and analyzed. But through this method, the model is complex and the calculation efficiency is not high. So how to use the grillage theory to construct model for the bridge to improve the design efficiency is necessary. Specifically, the model is established only by beam elements, in which compression-flexure member, shear-bending member is simplified as grillage or column case. The result of the comparative analysis on the two models shows that both the support reaction and the internal force or stress are in agreement under the dead weight and moving load, as well as the fundamental frequency and vibration. So the result of the simplified model according grillage for unitary analysis has sufficient precision. And the simplified method can provide some reference for spatial analysis of other similar bridges.

Of all French functional elements, the form de has without question the widest variety of uses, and presents the greatest challenge for linguistic description and analysis. Historically a preposition, it still has a number of prepositional uses in modern French, but in many contexts it calls for an altogether different treatment. We begin by outlining a general distinction between oblique and non-oblique uses of de. We then develop a detailed account of constructions where de combines with an N'. We provide a unitary analysis of de in three constructions (quantifier extraction, "quantification at a distance", and negative contexts) which have been not been considered to be related in previous accounts.
