Abstract Only a few mostly older studies analyzed the heterotrophic succession of dung beetles in the Midwestern United States. Such studies are needed to track the impacts of the climate crisis on heterotrophic succession and the associated decomposition processes that are central to soil fertility and carbon sequestration. The current study closes this knowledge gap and provides an easy and efficient method to estimate the relative attractiveness of individual dung pads during heterotrophic succession. The dung beetle community of Carpenter Farm in Adrian, Southeast Michigan was sampled for an entire year, including the winter months, using 15 pitfall traps baited with fresh cow manure. Samples were collected after 48 h and again after 72 h exposure time from the bucket content while leaving the bait unhampered. Eighty-four percent of all beetles were caught in the early sample, but only 6 species were missing in the later sample. A cluster analysis based on Pianka’s niche overlap identified a statistically higher mean overlap than expected by chance in a null model (model RA3) and divided the species community clearly into three clusters separating most relocators from most dwellers. Despite using a different method, my results confirmed the successional position of most previously described species and added data for several species with poor or unknown successional state. The successional segregation between dwellers and relocators discovered by the cluster analysis was paralleled by a significantly larger body size of relocators across taxonomic groups as compared to dwellers.

Based on received feedback, or analyzing customer experience, lessons learned, company makes decision how to develop the product on the next phase. In Georgia, use of prototypes started with development of projects related to Information Systems. But later it was successfully applied to product development and Business model development, especially for startups and small entrepreneurs.

This research paper aims to investigate if oxidative stress biomarkers increase after a painful procedure in term newborns and if nonpharmacological approaches, or sex, influence pain degree, and the subsequent OS. 83 healthy term newborns were enrolled to receive 10% oral glucose or sensorial saturation (SS) for analgesia during heel prick (HP). The ABC scale was used to score the pain. Advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and total hydroperoxides (TH) as biomarkers of OS were measured at the beginning (early-sample) and at the end (late-sample) of HP. The early-sample/late-sample ratio for AOPP and TH was used to evaluate the increase in OS biomarkers after HP. Higher levels of both AOPP and TH ratio were observed in high degree pain (4–6) compared with low degree pain score (0–3) (AOPP:p=0.049; TH:p=0.001). Newborns receiving SS showed a significantly lower pain score (p=0.000) and AOPP ratio levels (p=0.021) than those without. Males showed higher TH levels at the end of HP (p=0.005) compared to females. The current study demonstrates that a relationship between pain degree and OS exists in healthy full-term newborns. The amount of OS is gender related, being higher in males. SS reduces pain score together with pain-related OS in the newborns.

Twelve adult males participated in a randomized crossover phase I clinical trial comparing serum bactericidal titers (SBTs), urine bactericidal titers (UBTs), and urine killing rates (UKRs) against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, after the administration of single 400-mg doses of rufloxacin and norfloxacin at different times up to 72 h postdose. SBTs were significantly higher (P < 0.05) against E. coli from 8 to 48 h and against S. aureus from 4 to 24 h with rufloxacin. UBTs for E. coli were higher (P < 0.05) for norfloxacin at early sample times (0 to 8 h) but higher for rufloxacin (P < 0.05) at sample times from 16 h on for both E. coli and S. aureus. Similar UKRs were obtained for both quinolones for 0 to 2 h and 8 to 12 h, but the UKR was maintained for 72 h with rufloxacin. The high and sustained mean levels of rufloxacin in urine (> 35 micrograms/ml), median UBTs (> 32 for E. coli and 16 for S. aureus) and UKRs for E. coli suggest prolonged urine antibacterial activity (for at least 72 h) and its use as a single 400-mg dose in the treatment of uncomplicated cystitis.
