Purpose This study aims to provide a convincing argument behind the mixed findings on the association between sustainability reporting and firm performance by investigating the possibility of a non-linear relationship through a threshold model. Design/methodology/approach This study used (Hansen’s 1999) threshold framework to investigate the relationship between firm performance and sustainability reporting using a sample of 210 Bombay Stock Exchange-listed firms spanning over 10 years from March 2010 to March 2019. This framework helps to test the threshold effect’s presence, estimate the threshold value and check the authenticity of the estimated threshold value. Findings Sustainability reporting has a differential threshold impact on the different indicators of firm performance. On the one hand, the authors’ results illustrate that the firms’ operating performance is positively impacted if and only if the sustainability reporting crosses a certain threshold. On the other hand, sustainability reporting positively impacts firms’ market performance only up to a cut-off point. Practical implications Managers should strive to balance sustainability reporting to reap its desired benefits on firm performance. Originality/value This study explores the possible non-linearity in the association between firm performance and sustainability reporting and explains the relationship’s inconclusive results. Further, this study explores the field in the novel emerging economy with unique institutional settings that mandate spending on sustainability activities.

Diet and exercise are known to influence mental health. However, the interaction between diet, dietary practices, and exercise and its impact on the mood of young adults (YA) is poorly understood. YA are inherently at risk for mental distress. They tend to consume a low-quality diet and are generally active. The purpose of the study was to assess these relationships through validating causal loop diagrams (CLD) that describe these connections by using a system dynamic (SD) modeling methodology. Adults 18–29 years were invited to complete the Food-Mood questionnaire. The anonymous questionnaire link was distributed to several institutional listservs and via several social media platforms targeting young adults. A multi-level analysis, including machine learning techniques, was used to assess these relationships. The key findings were then built into gender based CLD, which suggest that a differential repertoire may be needed to optimize diet quality, exercise, and mental well-being. Additionally, a potential net threshold for dietary factors and exercise may be needed to achieve mental well-being in young adults. Moreover, our findings suggest that exercise may boost the enhancing effect of food groups on mental well-being and may lessen the negative impact of dietary impediments of mental well-being.

Abstract cis-3-Hexen-1-ol has been regarded as the main source of green aroma (or green odor) in green tea. However, no clear findings on the composition of green aroma components in tea and the effect of cis-3-hexen-1-ol on other aroma components have been reported. In this study, the main green aroma components in green tea were characterized, especially the role of cis-3-hexen-1-ol in green aroma was analyzed and how it affected other aroma components in green tea was studied. Based on the GC–MS detection, odor activity value evaluation, and monomer sniffing, 12 green components were identified. Through the chemometric analysis, cis-3-hexen-1-ol was proven as the most influential component of green aroma. Moreover, through the electronic nose analysis of different concentrations of cis-3-hexen-1-ol with 25 other aroma components in green tea, we showed that the effect of cis-3-hexen-1-ol plays a profound effect on the overall aroma based on the experiments of reconstitution solution and natural tea samples. GC–MS and CG-FID confirmed that the concentration range of the differential threshold of green odor and green aroma of cis-3-hexen-1-ol was 0.04–0.52 mg kg−1.

Although signal transduction by immunoreceptors such as the T cell antigen receptor (TCR), B cell antigen receptor (BCR), and Fc receptors uses the same schematic and similar molecules, the threshold and the fine-tuning are set differently for each receptor. One manifestation of these differences is that inhibition of Src family kinases (SFK) blocks TCR but not BCR signaling. SFKs are key kinases phosphorylating immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs (ITAM) in both these receptors. However, it has been proposed that in B cells, downstream kinase SYK can phosphorylate ITAM sequences independently of SFK, allowing it to compensate for the loss of SFK activity, whereas its T cell paralog ZAP-70 is not capable of this compensation. To test this proposal, we examined signaling in SYK- and ZAP-70–deficient B and T cell lines expressing SYK or ZAP-70. We also analyzed signal transduction in T cells expressing BCR or B cells expressing part of the TCR complex. We show that when compared with ZAP-70, SYK lowered the threshold for SFK activity necessary to initiate antigen receptor signaling in both T and B cells. However, neither SYK nor ZAP-70 were able to initiate signaling independently of SFK. We further found that additional important factors are involved in setting this threshold. These include differences between the antigen receptor complexes themselves and the spatial separation of the key transmembrane adaptor protein LAT from the TCR. Thus, immunoreceptor sensing of SFK activity is a complex process regulated at multiple levels.

ABSTRACT Background Few studies have comprehensively examined the effect of methyl donor status on maternal DNA methylation and birth outcomes. Objectives This study examined associations between periconceptional methyl donor status and genome-wide and specific imprinted gene methylation and fetal growth indices in the Taiwan Pregnancy-Newborn Epigenetics cohort. Methods Plasma folate, choline (free form), and betaine concentrations of the participants enrolled at 7–10 weeks of gestation were analyzed. DNA methylation at regulatory sequences of the imprinted H19 gene and genomic long interspersed nuclear element 1 (LINE-1) were measured in maternal lymphocytes using bisulfite/high-resolution melt polymerase chain reaction. Associations with birth weight (BW) were estimated through multiple regressions from 112 mother–newborn pairs. Results A nonlinear “L-shaped” relation and an inverse association between maternal plasma folate in T1 (mean ± SE: 17.6 ± 5.1 nmol/L) and lymphocytic LINE-1 methylation (β: −0.49, P = 0.027) were characterized. After adjusting for LINE-1 methylation, individual maternal folate concentrations were positively associated with BW variance (β = 0.24, P = 0.035), and the association was more pronounced in mothers with choline in T1 (mean ± SE: 5.4 ± 0.6 μmol/L; β: 0.40, P = 0.039). Choline status of the mothers in T2 (mean ± SE: 7.2 ± 0.6 μmol/L) was inversely associated with LINE-1 methylation (β: −0.43, P = 0.035), and a positive association was evident between T1 choline and H19 methylation (β: 0.48, P = 0.011). After adjusting for epigenetic modification, maternal choline status predicted a positive association with BW (β: 0.56, P = 0.005), but the effect was limited to mothers with high betaine concentrations in T3 (mean ± SE: 36.4 ± 8.8 μmol/L), depending on folate status. Conclusions Our data highlight the differential threshold effects of periconceptional folate, choline, and betaine status on genomic LINE-1 and H19 DNA methylation and how their interplay has a long-term effect on BW variance.
