ABSTRACT Intestinal anisakiasis is not only a rare but also a difficult to diagnose parasitic disease. The symptoms are not specific and are often severe and abrupt; therefore, patients are sometimes diagnosed as having surgical abdomen. The clinical imaging findings are remarkable, including ascites, enteritis, ileus, eosinophilic granuloma and sometimes perforation. We experienced a case of intestinal anisakiasis diagnosed on the basis of the Anisakis-specific immunoglobulin A level from paired sera and treated successfully with conservative therapy, although ileum perforation was complicated by a 50-mm abscess. Even the large abscess could be treated without drainage in thiscase.

The world has suffered over the past year under COVID-19. Unfortunately, people still are getting sick from other, also severe, diseases. Although the COVID-19 infection is present, patients need treatment for other life-threatening conditions. We present the case of a 36-year-old patient with severe infective endocarditis with a large abscess of the aortic root, who also is COVID-19 positive. Definitive diagnostics and treatment were avoided due to COVID-19 infection. In the end, emergent surgery was indicated due to acute cardiac decompensation and the development of heart failure symptoms, and the patient recovered uneventfully after surgery.

A 14-year-old boy presented to our Emergency Department complaining of fever, and abdominal pain. An abdominal computed tomography showed a large abscess of the spleen. Percutaneous aspiration of the lesion was performed. Splenectomy was performed 38 days after percutaneous aspiration because of the abscess’s considerable size.

A Jewish woman, 65 years old, has been ill for several days, complains of a fever and pain in the lower abdomen. On 2 transverse fingers under the pubis, a tumor is felt, very painful, emanating from the small pelvis; complete prolapse of the vagina and incomplete uterus; with a double study of the reduction of the fallen out parts, it is determined that the fornices are free, and the above-mentioned painful swelling is a direct continuation of the significantly enlarged uterus.

AbstractIn June 1668 Anthony Ashley Cooper, later to become the 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, underwent abdominal surgery to drain a large abscess above his liver. The case is extraordinary, not simply on account of the eminence of the patient and the danger of the procedure, but also because of the many celebrated figures involved. A trove of manuscripts relating to this famous operation survives amongst the Shaftesbury Papers in the National Archives at Kew. These include case notes in the hand of the philosopher John Locke and advice from leading physicians of the day including Francis Glisson, Sir George Ent and Thomas Sydenham. The majority of this material has never been published before. This article provides complete transcriptions and translations of all of these manuscripts, thus providing for the first time a comprehensive case history. It is prefaced with an extended introduction.
