V. BRUSOV’S ARTICLE ON M. LOMONOSOV. INTRODUCTORY REMARKS BY IRINA ATAJANYAN (YEREVAN)

The author publishes V. Brusov’s paper «On Lomonosov». According to V. Brusov, M. Lomonosov is «the father of the Russian literature». Significantly, V. Brusov overlooked M. Lomonosov’s poetry, with a view towards his works on prosody. The publication’s author concludes that V. Brusov intended to write a research paper on M. Lomonosov’s life and creativity.

ON THE INTERPRETATION OF V. BRUSOV’S CORRESPONDENCE. INTRODUCTORY REMARKS. COMMENTS AND NOTES BY NIKOLAY BOGOMOLOV

The paper’s author publishes V. Brusov’s letters to Shesterkina, which were already published by M. Gasparov. The author adjusts some of conclusions drawn by M. Gasparov, on the basis of the same letters.

«THE FLOWERS OF WALLPAPERS, THE CHAINS OF BOOKS…» (ON V. BRUSOV’S STUDY ROOM IN THE MUSEUM OF LITERATURE OF THE SILVER AGE)

The paper is devoted to V.Brusov’s study room, on the ground floor of the mansion located on the First Meschanskaya Street (currently Avenue of Peace) in Moscow. The paper describes the furniture, the renowned visitors’ impressions, dwells upon the poetic meetings V. Brusov initiated in his study room on Wednesdays. Currently the study hosts the Museum of Literature of the Silver Age.

REMARKS ON ATLANTIS RESEARCH WITH REGARD TO V. BRUSOV’S LIFE AND CREATIVITY

The goal of the paper is to trace the origin of V. Brusov’s interest in Atlantis research. The idea of the Lost Paradise, or Atlantis, is inherent in the poet’s early stuff. The paper’s author analyzes V. Brusov’s works devoted to Atlantis, including those unpublished, and concludes that to resolve «the non-scientific» issue referring to Atlantis V. Brusov had been the first who intended to involve the interdisciplinary sciences that were applied only in the mid-XX century.

TRANSLATIONS FROM BEDROS TOURIAN BY V. BRUSOV AND K. BALMONT

The paper analyzes «My Sorrow», a verse by Bedros Tourian, translated both by V. Brusov and K. Balmont. The paper’s author concludes that V. Brusov’s translation is close to the original source, while K. Balmont made some redrafting of the text. It is noteworthy that V. Brusov did not include his own translation of the abovementioned verse in the first edition of the anthology «The Poetry of Armenia», opting for K. Balmont’s translation.

V. BRUSOV’S SONNET «TO A WOMAN» TRANSLATED BY D. BELYAEVA

The paper focuses on the English translation of «To a Woman», a sonnet by V. Brusov. The sonnet was translated by Dina Belyaeva, an American poetess, who had translated verses by Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Anna Akhmatova, Alexander Blok, etc. In the meantime, she translated sonnets by William Shakespeare and verses by Emily Dickenson into Russian. The translation analysis concluded that D. Belyaeva managed to fairly represent V. Brusov’s sonnet to the English-speaking audience.

V. BRUSOV AND CINEMA

The paper focuses on the screenplays by V. Brusov. Significantly, they have not been published and are kept at the Russian State Library and at the V. Brusov’s Fund. The author highlights that cinematic terms also appear in certain texts and titles by V. Brusov. The writer’s widow noted that V. Brusov had intended to write a series of historic short stories entitled «Cinema of the Centuries», «Films of the Ages», etc. The author also emhasizes that V. Brusov was the first to appreciate the need for establishing a Higher Educational Institution for film industry workers. The corresponding document is kept at the RSFSR Central State Archive.

GOETHE «INEFFABILE» MOTIVE IN WORKS BY V. BRUSOV

The paper is targeted at determining V. Brusov’s perception of «ineffabile », i. e. «the incomprehensible divinity». According to the paper’s author, Goethe’s dictum «Individuum est Ineffabile», as well as his protagonists, reverberated in V. Brusov’s works. The matter concerns V. Brusov’s unfinished drama «Faust in Moscow», an essay «On ‘’Saint Lazarus’’», as well as a number of short stories, novels and verses.

ON THE ISSUE OF INTERTEXTUALITY IN V. BRUSOV’S POETIC TEXTS

The paper focuses on the notion of intertextuality and determines it as the world linguistic component. According to the author, culturological components are abundant on V. Brusov texts, thus reflecting his in-depth knowledge of the world literature. Consequently, reading V. Brusov’s poetry a reader also deepens his knowledge in the history of the world culture, thus broadening his mind.

V. BRUSOV'S LETTERS SENT TO I. BRUSOVA FROM PARIS (1909). INTRODUCTORY REMARKS, TRANSLATION AND NOTES BY NATALIA KHACHATRYAN (YEREVAN)

The author publishes a number of letters V. Brusov sent to his spouse, I. Brusova, from Paris. The correspondence provides the writer’s insight of the city, his impressions of the meetings with René Gillet, Charles Vildrac, Paul Boyer, Konstantin Balmont. He also informed his wife of fashion and hairstyle trends and attached the magazines clippings. The correspondence also reveals V. Brusov’s engagement in some remarkable events, such as aviator flights.
