Ethics: A Guide for Science

Ethics is crucial for science. This article aims to outline the relationship between ethics and science. Science as a profession cannot be separated from ethics. Scientists require not only rigorous methods and procedures in their work but also ethics to guide them. They are demanded as experts in their fields and as good persons. Ordinary people (non-scientific society) trust reliable scientists who have good competence, skill and personality. Hence, integration of science and ethics bring up epistemic trust, on the one hand among scientists and on the other hand among scientists and non-scientific society. There are various kinds of ethics that can be a guide for the scientific work of scientists. However, in this article I offer Karol Wojtyła's personalist ethics based on the philosophy of being as a guide for science.

Modernism, Mysticism and the Pursuit of Freedom - Bringing the initial instinct of the Modernists to its fulfilment in the model of the Christian mystic

While one can certainly debate about the forms Modernism (in the artistic sense) manifested itself in and what actually qualified as Modernism, one cannot deny that the desire for freedom was one of its underlying tenets. In the 21st century it would seem however that the desire for freedom has not been satiated. In the following essay I will explore whether emancipating art from a moral authority achieved the freedom modernist artists so deeply desired and I will question whether severing himself from objective truth the artist was allowed to fully thrive. Comparing Modernist concept’s (Stream of consciousness, that art should reflect reality and the emphasis on subjectivity etc.) with the fundamentals of Christian mysticism (i.e. the interior life) and by reconciling subjective experience with objective truth through the use of St John Paul II’s philosophical anthropology – I hope to pose an alternative path to satiate, truly satiate, the Modernist’s thirst for freedom.

Rola organizacji międzynarodowych w zachowaniu pamięci o Holokauście: Przykład Organizacji Narodów Zjednoczonych

W artykule próbuję odpowiedzieć na pytanie o rolę organizacji międzynarodowych w zachowaniu pamięci o Holokauście na przykładzie Organizacji Narodów Zjednoczonych. Tekst rozpoczyna się od krótkiego rysu historycznego przedstawiającego okoliczności powstania ONZ. W kolejnych częściach odnoszę się do konkretnych przykładów działań, których celem (choć nie zawsze jedynym) było przeciwdziałanie ludobójstwom oraz upamiętnienie Zagłady. Omawiam dwa dokumenty: Powszechną Deklarację Praw Człowieka oraz Konwencję w Sprawie Zapobiegania i Karania Zbrodni Ludobójstwa. W tekście odnoszę się także ustanowionego przez Zgromadzenie Ogólne ONZ w 2005 roku Międzynarodowego Dnia Pamięci o ofiarach Holokaustu. Z kolei w ostatniej części próbuję odpowiedzieć na pytanie czy podejmowanie przez organizację działania w tym obszarze są skuteczne.

Enhancing Politicians’ Persuasiveness: Some Remarks on the Importance of Rhetorical Figures of Repetition in Political Discourse

The modern political class, which has been established on democratic principles both in Europe and America, is keen to use rhetoric and tools it provides. Any attempt to define the influence of these tools principally refers to the essence of rhetoric which is persuasion. Persuasion, on the other hand, is core to political discourse which, according to Teun van Dijk (1997, p. 14) is contextual, therefore must be recognized by its functions and/or goals. The functions of the discourse are often expressed in rhetorical devices and therefore play an important role in achieving political goals. The pieces of information presented in this article depict rhetorical devices as useful in increasing persuasiveness. Attention is paid to figures of repetition which constitute a universal category of rhetorical devices and thus need to be examined in a greater detail, especially in a discourse whose users focus their efforts on constructing effective persuasion.

Language and Culture Interconnectedness

Numerous criticism directed at the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis called forth the viewing of the hypothesis through the prism of language and culture interconnection and check to what extent the linguistic determinism is an applicable and useful tool in foreign language studies. For this reason, the present paper carries out a discussion to construct a somewhat modified version of the linguistic determinism idea by adding to the language–culture unit a third element such as expressiveness. To make the proposed here version of linguistic determinism comprehensible, it has been decided to describe and explain the notions of language, culture, and expressiveness to make them clear and digestible for the purpose of the present discussion. In the course of the discussion, strengthened by quotations from the literature, the main stress is put on the language-culture interconnectedness viewed as the key element determining successful language studies, especially in the foreign languages domain. Finally, the attention is directed at the role of creativity and expressiveness as factors responsible for the level of the language user’s competence, which, in turn, is viewed as creative communicative competence.

Mężczyzna w edukacji przedszkolnej: prolegomena do badań w Polsce

Celem, jaki sobie stawia autorka artykułu jest rozpoznanie głównych kierunków badań nad obecnością i rolą mężczyzny w edukacji przedszkolnej w Polsce i na świecie. Problematyka badawcza koncentruje się na pytaniach: Jaki jest stan badań nad uwarunkowaniami udziału mężczyzn w procesie edukacji przedszkolnej w Polsce oraz na świecie?, Jakie są węzłowe problemy charakteryzowanego nurtu badań?, Jakie są rekomendacje dla praktyki edukacji przedszkolnej w zakresie zatrudniania mężczyzn w roli wychowawców? W badaniach wykorzystano metodę analityczno-syntetyczną literatury przedmiotu. Artykuł rozpoczyna analiza stanu badań w Polsce. Stan ten skonfrontowano ze stanem badań międzynarodowych. Przybliżono główne kierunki badań nad zagadnieniem zatrudniania mężczyzn w edukacji przedszkolnej, wskazując zarówno ich osiągnięcia, jak i niedostatki. Analiza stanu badań w Polsce prowadzi do wniosku o braku zainteresowania polskich przedstawicieli nauki kwestią obecności/nieobecności mężczyzn w edukacji przedszkolnej. Natomiast badania międzynarodowe w tym zakresie są dobrze rozwinięte. Obejmują one szerokie spektrum zagadnień, od kwestii równości na rynku pracy, poprzez postrzeganie społeczne nauczycieli przedszkola, ich strategie działań i realizację męskich ról w sfeminizowanym środowisku pracy, współpracę z kobietami i ich postrzeganie jako swych partnerów w miejscu pracy. Nieobecność w polskich badaniach nad edukacją przedszkolną zagadnienia roli mężczyzn we wczesnej edukacji dziecka wydaje się poważną luką badawczą, która wymaga szybkiego uzupełnienia. Prezentowany artykuł ma ułatwić potencjalnym badaczom rozpoznanie kluczowych zagadnień, analizowanych już od trzech dekad w badaniach międzynarodowych. Refleksji teoretycznej powinny towarzyszyć programy oświatowe i społeczne uświadamiające konieczność udziału mężczyzn w procesie wychowania dziecka oraz szerszego zatrudnienia ich w placówkach edukacji przedszkolnej.

Effective Models of Reintegration for De-occupied Territories

The article aims to reveal the essence of the reintegration process of the occupied and de-occupied territories, determining the current state and characterizing the conflict in the East of Ukraine. Its components and implementation tools are analyzed, and foreign models of reintegration of the occupied and de-occupied territories are presented and evaluated; there is also determined the degree of their conformity for Ukraine. In this research, there was made an attempt to find the most effective model for the reintegration of Donbas, which would not only contribute to the demilitarization and restoration of state control in these territories, but also prevent the emergence of separatist movements, stimulate the process of returning, and integration of citizens to the social, cultural, economic and political life of their country of origin. It was stressed that the Ukrainian model for restoring the territorial integrity and reintegration of Donbas should be based on compromise and key issues that have a positive international grounding for which the government has a public support, combined with a strong national, international, and military one. There is a greater chance for working out a mutual standpoint of Ukraine and its international partners which would allow the conflict with Russia to be solved. It is noted that the problem remains since there is no consensus among citizens on the optimal way of restoring the territorial integrity of Ukraine. That is why there is an urgent need to create a comprehensive strategy to restore the territorial integrity and reintegration of Donbas. It will have a necessary impact on all the parties of the conflict, and result in a publicly supported compromise. This can be achieved despite the current domestic and international peculiarities of the process; help can be expected from international experience in restoring peace as well as from the government’s approach to the process of reintegration and shaping up a unified state.

Irish Bards in Shakespeare’s Richard III and As You Like it

Shakespeare alludes twice to Irish bards. In Richard III, the king mentions a prophecy by one of his imminent death; in As You Like It, Rosalind jokes on how Irish bards can supposedly rhyme rats to death. Both refer to supposed bardic powers of seeing the future and of ritual cursing of enemies. A survey of the literature shows satire and prophecy as going back to ancient times. There is in addition ample material on the (sometimes deadly) effects of satire in medieval and later Ireland, where it is known from chronicles, legal tracts, handbooks of poetry, and various surviving poems. There are in addition comic tales on how bards exploited their power, including an eleventh-century one on King Guaire's Burdensome Company, wherein the poet Senchán rhymes to death certain mice that had spoiled an egg reserved for him. Shakespeare's references can thus be related to traditions well-known in Gaul and medieval (or early modern) Ireland and Scotland.

Aspekty funkcjonowania innowacyjnych przedsiębiorstw na przykładzie Polski Wschodniej

Innowacyjność to przedmiot licznych badań, w których badacze doszukują się jej warunków, przyczyn i skutków. Proces innowacji zaczyna się jeszcze przed rozpoczęciem badań naukowych w przedsiębiorstwie, na etapie tworzenia pomysłu i kończy się na wdrożeniu innowacji i jego upowszechnieniu. Warto skonstruować szeroki wachlarz wskaźników odnoszących się do warunków, czy determinant funkcjonowania innowacyjnych przedsiębiorstw, w tym do takich zagadnień jak przedsiębiorczość, rozwój technologiczny czy różnorodność. Szczególnie interesujące może być uszczegółowienie wymienionych aspektów w odniesieniu do Polski Wschodniej – regionu o niesprzyjających warunkach dla rozwoju przedsiębiorczości, z powodu niedostatecznie rozwiniętej bazy ekonomicznej, a także niedostatków w rozwoju infrastruktury komunikacyjnej, ekonomicznej, zasobów ludzkich oraz lokalnego rynku.

Analiza lingwistyczna komunikacji wyborczej Partii Sługa Narodu w czasie wyborów samorządowych we Lwowie w 2020

W artykule, na przykładzie wyborów samorządowych przeprowadzonych w 2020 r., w Obwodzie Lwowskim, przeprowadzono analizę lingwistyczną komunikacji wyborczej Partii Sługa Narodu. Badanie zrealizowano w oparciu o metodologię stosowaną przez lingwistykę polityczną. Przeprowadzona analiza pozwala na stwierdzenie, że w czasie komunikacji wyborczej omawiania w tekście partia skorzystała z szerokiej gamy technik i zasobów języka politycznego. W czasie komunikacji wyborczej zastosowano, w większości przypadków, strategie: konsolidacji (taktyki integracji narodu ukraińskiego, polityka z narodem); autoprezentacji (taktyki demonstrowania profesjonalizmu, patriotyzmu, odpowiedzialności), argumentacji (taktyki uzasadniania tezy, dialogiczności, kompromisu).
