This paper seeks to shed more light on calendrical knowledge in the first centuries of the Islamic era in which different administrative traditions fell under the control of a central government. Astronomy as a court-sponsored discipline in the Abbasid dynasty (132-656 AH/750-1258 CE), undertook the pivotal task of identifying and mastering various calendrical disciplines under the reign of the caliphs to make a centralized management feasible. In the first two centuries, the domination of the Arabic lunar calendar, whose significance lies in governing the Islamic yearly festivals and occasions, led to drastic disagreements with the annual planting cycles that were followed by the farmers. Accordingly, the official taxation system faced serious problems. The solution to which was the development of a well-established solar calendar. The large concern of the ninth-century Muslim astronomers for calendrical computations, acknowledges their integral participation in this executive challenge. The present study follows these practices through the lens of a ninth-century Arabic astronomical text, written by Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Kathīr al-Farghānī (Alfraganus in the west), known mainly as the Elements of Astronomy. The careful exploration of this text helps us achieve a broader image of time-keeping accounts in the early Islamic era and the need for calendrical conversions. Moreover, the author’s detailed report of the five existing calendars of the time (Arabic, Syriac, Byzantine, Persian and Egyptian) and their systems of nomenclature, opens an early window to the linguistic investigation of time-reckoning in the Islamic world.

The figures of deer, of kantharos (cantharus), and the four rivers of Paradise are all part of a rich catalog of early Christian iconography in Tunisia. We often find this iconography in the mosaics of baptisteries, as well as mosaics in the basilicas. The presence of such iconographic figures in all Tunisia, whether in prominent basilicas or in small rural churches reflects the unity of the Christian faith throughout the territory, as well as the firmness of the Christian traditions that came from the East. In this article, we will first explain the spiritual and Christian signification of these iconographic figures and afterwards we will present the models in mosaics found in Tunisia within their archeological context. The mummification process of the ancient Egyptians has created great myths about this civilization but the process of creating the mummies was not immutable throughout the entire history of Egypt. Such is so, that before El-Fayum's portraits we find ourselves facing the best example in which three great civilisations converge, such as Egypt, Greece and Rome, in the same space-time framework. Nevertheless, this fact has meant a grievance as for its conservation, not having a clear answer about which researchers were better prepared to study them. Another one of the most outstanding peculiarities of these portraits, is the pictorial technique used, the great information it give us about the physical aspect of the mummy and even the social position they occupied, since until the appearance of these portraits, not everyone could afford a funeral in which its remains were mummified.

Ghosts are the cultural product of a series of beliefs that stem from the existence of a dissociated numen that inhabits the human body. It is this separation that makes possible to conceive the autonomous presence of the spiritual entity. This ancestral type of story has been reproduced since the dawn of humanity, although this work seeks to elucidate what the connotations of use of a Greek term are, that passes into Latin and that undergoes an evolution through the filter of Christianity. Through a study of a historical-philological nature with a comparative perspective, this article aims to show the differences in use, paying special attention to the patristic texts of Tertullian and the allegorical and Christian poetry of Prudentius.

In this work we intend to offer a clear and concise view of some of the fundamental aspects of the Roman army that emerged from the “Crisis of the Third Century”, a traumatic period full of transformations that altered the structures of the Roman State forever. We will try to show that some of the most important changes of those key moments were linked to the army, from which the basis of well-known Later Roman Empire would emerge, ultimately represented by the reforms of Diocletian and Constantine.

The finding of three Latin crosses of the bracketed type, engraved in the late antiquity cave necropolis of Tiermes is studied. The cemetery context itself, in which the tombs were made, is analyzed to determine their chronology. The remains recovered during the excavations carried out there can be dated between the end of the 5th century and the middle of the 6th century. At the same time, we have confirmed that the type of crosses reproduced had a moment of splendor, precisely at that chronological moment, when it was used as a cemetery space; existing multiple parallels both in the East and in the Iberian Peninsula. They are not strange in cave stations here, of different appearance, including hermitages and/or necropolis, among others, case of hermitages and/or necropolis, among others.

The episcopal power in Late Antiquity is generally configured around ciuitas. However, the conciliar legislation of 4th-7th centuries interdicted to set up bishoprics in no urban environment. There are some evidences in different European regions of their existence in minor and rural centres, responding to a diverse casuistic according to the region where are they established. From different examples, we propose a hypothesis to explain the promotion of secondary agglomerations to episcopal centres in Late Antique Hispania.

In this article I intend to show that the bagaudian revolts that occurred in the 3rd and 5th centuries had little military and political importance. To do this, I will confront a large part of modern historiography, which considers these revolts as a determining part of the fall of the Western part of the Roman Empire. The study of the response by the imperial government and the careful analysis of the sources will allow me to support my hypothesis.

This paper aims to delve into the transition from traditional cults in the sacred city of Dion, in Macedonia, to Christianity. By means of the study of sources, mainly Archaeology and Epigraphy, these pages will present the available information concerning the Christian period of Dion. In this way, it will be possible to explain the changes of religious practices of its inhabitants. This phenomenon is characterized by the gradual abandonment of the shrines, which coincided with the erection of buildings for the Christian cult.
