Abstract In this paper, a method has been proposed to group into six sets the infinite number of solutions from dimensional synthesis of planar triads for six precision positions. The proposed method reveals the relationships between the different configurations of the compatibility linkage and the sets of numerical solutions from dimensional synthesis. By checking the determinant signs and the contunities of values of the sub-Jacobian matrices and their derivatives with respect to the independent angular displacement for all constraint sets in the compatibility linkage, it enables the computer to identify and group the synthesized solutions. Numerical examples have been given to verify the applicability of this method. Six sets of the partial triad Burmester curves have been plotted based on grouped solutions. Suitable solutions can be easily found from the partial triad Burmester curves and utilized for the prescribed design task. This method provides a useful tool to group the dimensional synthesis solutions and enhances the computer automation in the design of linkage mechanisms.

Venous gas emboli (VGE) are often quantified as a marker of decompression stress on echocardiograms. Bubble-counting has been proposed as an easy to learn method, but remains time-consuming, rendering large dataset analysis impractical. Computer automation of VGE counting following this method has therefore been suggested as a means to eliminate rater bias and save time. A necessary step for this automation relies on the selection of a frame during late ventricular diastole (LVD) for each cardiac cycle of the recording. Since electrocardiograms (ECG) are not always recorded in field experiments, here we propose a fully automated method for LVD frame selection based on regional intensity minimization. The algorithm is tested on 20 previously acquired echocardiography recordings (from the original bubble-counting publication), half of which were acquired at rest (Rest) and the other half after leg flexions (Flex). From the 7,140 frames analyzed, sensitivity was found to be 0.913 [95% CI: 0.875-0.940] and specificity 0.997 [95% CI: 0.996-0.998]. The method’s performance is also compared to that of random chance selection and found to perform significantly better (p<0.0001). No trend in algorithm performance was found with respect to VGE counts, and no significant difference was found between Flex and Rest (p>0.05). In conclusion, full automation of LVD frame selection for the purpose of bubble counting in post-dive echocardiography has been established with excellent accuracy, although we caution that high quality acquisitions remain paramount in retaining high reliability.

Now we turn to the question: ‘Once I have created an abstract declaration in EXPRESS, what would an instance of that thing look like?’ EXPRESS-I allows you to create instances of EXPRESS things that have values in place of references to datatypes. The main reason for doing this is to study some realistic examples of things that otherwise might be difficult to understand. After all, it is one thing to describe a tree and quite another to actually see one. Some of the design goals of EXPRESS-I are based on these requirements: • Major information modeling projects are large and complex. Managing them without appropriate tools based on formal languages and methods is a risky proposition. Informal specification techniques eliminate the possibility of employing computer automation in checking for inconsistencies in presentation or specification. • The language should focus on the display of the realization of the properties of entities, which are the things of interest. The definition of entities is in terms of data and behavior. Data represents the properties by which an entity is realized and behavior is represented by constraints. • The language should seek to avoid, as far as possible, specific implementation views. That is, EXPRESS-I models do not suggest the structure of databases, object bases, or of information bases in general. • The language should provide a means for displaying small populated models of EXPRESS schemas as examples for design reviews. • The language should provide a means for supporting the specification of test suites for information model processors. EXPRESS-I represents entity instances in terms of the values of its attributes (attributes are the traits or characteristics considered important for use and understanding). These values have a representation which might be considered simple (an integer value) or something more complex (an entity value). A geometric point might be defined in terms of three real numbers named x, y and z, and the actual values associated with those attributes might be 1.0, 2.5 and 7.9. The EXPRESS-I instance language provides a means of displaying instantiations of EXPRESS data elements. The language is designed principally for human readability and for ease of generating EXPRESS-I element instances from definitions in an EXPRESS schema.

The advent of computer automation and profile fitting techniques in powder diffraction., along with a general solution to the problem of preferred orientation, has opened a series of new horizons for this method. The new levels of accuracy attainable have brought us to the threshold of routine reliable qualitative phase identification, high precision quantitative analysis and the ability to perform crystal structure analysis on some of the most important technological materials. It has been primarily the question of accuracy which has held up these developments until now.

A new method is presented by which equations of motion of complex dynamical systems are reduced when subjected to some constraints. The method developed is used when the governing equations are derived using Kane’s equations with undetermined multipliers. The solution vectors of the constraint equations are determined utilizing the recursive Householder transformation to obtain a Pseudo-Uptriangular matrix. The most general solution in terms of new independent coordinates is then formulated. Methods previously used for handling such systems are discussed and the new method advantages are illustrated. The procedures developed are suitable for computer automation and especially in developing generic programs to study a large class of systems dynamics such as robotics, biosystems, and complex mechanisms.

Summary Introduction: The identification of key factors influencing responses to prompts and reminders within a computer decision support system (CDSS) has not been widely studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate why clinicians routinely answer certain prompts while others are ignored. Methods: We utilized data collected from a CDSS developed by our research group – the Child Health Improvement through Computer Automation (CHICA) system. The main outcome of interest was whether a clinician responded to a prompt. Results: This study found that, as expected, some clinics and physicians were more likely to address prompts than others. However, we also found clinicians are more likely to address prompts for younger patients and when the prompts address more serious issues. The most striking finding was that the position of a prompt was a significant predictor of the likelihood of the prompt being addressed, even after controlling for other factors. Prompts at the top of the page were significantly more likely to be answered than the ones on the bottom. Conclusions: This study detailed a number of factors that are associated with physicians following clinical decision support prompts. This information could be instrumental in designing better interventions and more successful clinical decision support systems in the future.
