Unsaturated polyester resins are extensively used in the fibre-reinforced plastic industry. The fracture toughness and impact resistance of rigid unsaturated polyester can be improved by the incorporation of elastomers by physical and chemical methods. In the physical method, two strategies are adopted. In the first, various masticated elastomers are dissolved in styrene and blended with unsaturated polyester resin. In this study, the mechanical properties of cured blends are compared with the unmodified resin and the performance of nitrile rubber is found to be far superior to all other rubbers considered. In the second approach, elastomers are modified by grafting with maleic anhydride. These maleated elastomers are then dissolved in styrene and blended with polyester resin. Maleic anhydride modified elastomers are found to improve the mechanical properties such as toughness, impact resistance and tensile strength of the cured resin to a greater extent compared to unmodified elastomers.

The xylene formaldehyde unsaturated polyester resin was synthesized with glycol, xylene formaldehyde resin and maleic anhydride (MA) as raw materials using styrene as diluent. It was used in putty. The dosage of hydroquinone (HQ), propylene glycol (PG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) mole ratio on the influence of the synthesis of the resin and the performance of the putty. The results show that the amount of HQ is about 0.03% of the total mass. the synthetic process is smoothly and the curing performance of the resin is better. The premise is that the mass of PG and DEG possesses 4.5% of the xylene formaldehyde resin mass. Mole ratio of PG and DEG (PG-DEG ratio: 1: 2mol/mol) is critical for high yield.

A novel soybean oil monoglyceride based unsaturated polyester resin (SOMGUPR) was prepared using two step polymerization with soybean oil,glycerol,1.2-propanediol,maleric anhydride and phthalic anhydride. FT-IR spectroscopy ,Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and 1H-NMR spectroscopy were employed to study the chemical structure and molecular weight of this unsaturated polyester resin. The results show that 190°C is the optimal temperature to controll the extent of estification reaction. The number-average molecular weight(Mn) decrease with the increasing value of nglycerol:nsoybean oil in SMOGUPR.Also, the side reaction between SOMG and maleric anhydride has not occured as evidenced by 1H-NMR spectroscopy.

Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) is one of the film-forming resins commonly used for preparation of coatings. However, the general type UPR has some disadvantages which limit its application such as poor water resistance, solvent resistance, heat resistance and mechanical properties. To improve common UPR’s comprehensive performance, methyl-α-eleostearate-maleic anhydride adduct (MEMAA), a derivative from Tung oil, was prepared and introduced into UPR system to form MEMAA modified UPR (M-UPR). Influences of MEMAA’s dosage in M-UPR on water and toluene absorption and tensile strength of M-UPR were investigated. The thermal property and morphology of M-UPR were also studied by TGA and SEM, respectively. Experimental results show that the water resistance, solvent resistance and tensile strength of UPR have been improved a lot and the heat resistance of UPR also has a certain degree of improvement after UPR’ being modified by MEMAA. Compared with the common UPR film, when the dosage of MEMAA is 9% of UPR’s mass, the water absorption, toluene absorption of M-UPR film are decreased by 21.0% and 18.6%, respectively, and whereas, the tensile strength and thermal decomposition temperature of UPR film are increases by 14% and 20 oC.
