AbstractOver the last century, the distribution of Teloschistes flavicans has contracted from being widespread in the southern half of England and Wales to being limited to South-West England with outlying populations in Pembrokeshire and North Wales. Twelve core sites have been identified where the species is well established: ten of these are saxicolous/terricolous habitats on windy coastal cliff tops; the other two are lines of sycamore trees near the coast. At 39 further localities, some inland, the species is in very small amounts (often on one tree) and vulnerable to extinction. It is normally a member of the Parmelietum revolutae or Ramalinetum scopularis associations. The conservation of the species is discussed.

Until 2019, TBE was considered only to be an imported disease to the United Kingdom. In that year, evidence became available that the TBEV is likely circulating in the country1,2 and a first “probable case” of TBE originating in the UK was reported.3 In addition to TBEV, louping ill virus (LIV), a member of the TBEV-serocomplex, is also endemic in parts of the UK. Reports of clinical disease caused by LIV in livestock are mainly from Scotland, parts of North and South West England and Wales.4

Isoetes jarmaniae sp. nov. is described as a new lycophyte endemic to Tasmania, Australia, where it is confined to peat-bound karstic wetlands in several river valleys in the south-west wilderness. While seemingly morphologically closest to I. drummondii, this quillwort has features that are globally uncommon in Isoetes and unknown in other Australasian taxa. Most notable are its markedly flattened, strongly recurved leaves and disproportionately large sporangium ligules that are more suggestive of South American than Australian taxa. As well, the exceptionally thin and wide (alate) megaspore equatorial ridge is swollen at suture intersections, presenting a slightly triangular shape suggestive of the Indian taxon I. udupiensis. The microspores of I. jarmaniae exhibit exceptionally, perhaps uniquely, fine-papillate ornamentation. An original key placing I. jarmaniae in context with the other Tasmanian Isoetes species is provided. This diminutive, apparently diploid species is evidently maintaining a self-sustaining population within a regionally unique habitat and small geographic range.

SUMMARYThe occurrence of Mycobacterium bovis infection in cattle herds during the period 1966–92 in two geographically related areas in South-West England is compared. In one area comprising 104 km2 all badgers were systematically destroyed from 1975–81, after which recolonization was allowed; in the other, comprising 116 km2, small scale, statutory badger removal operations were undertaken from 1975 onwards where specific herds were detected with M. bovis infection. In the area with total clearance, no further incidents with M. bovis isolation occurred from 1982–92. Survival analysis and proportional hazards regression indicated that the risk of herds being identified with infection was less once badgers had been cleared from their neighbourhood, whereas it was greater in herds with 50 or more animals, and once cattle in a herd had responded positively to the tuberculin skin test, even though infection with M. bovis was not confirmed subsequently. The study provides further evidence that badgers represent an important reservoir of M. bovis infection for cattle and that badger control is effective in reducing incidents of cattle infection with M. bovis if action is thorough and recolonization is prevented.

SUMMARYParticular epidemiological features of Mycobacterium bovis infection in cattle herds in Great Britain during the period 1972–8 were examined. During these seven years 1099 herds became infected, the mean annual incidence of herd infection being of the order of one infected herd per 1000 cattle herds.Infection in herds was predominantly a sporadic occurrence; 938 (85·4%) herds experienced only one incident of infection which persisted for less than 12 months. The concentration of infected herds in localized areas of the south-west region England, where infected badgers were the most significant attributed source infection, is demonstrated.The risk of herd infection in relation to badger sett density was also examined in Cornwall, Gloucestershire/Avon and counties in England and Wales outside south-west region of England. The numbers of herds at risk in six categories badger sett density in these three areas were estimated from three random samples of herds drawn from the annual agricultural census. In Cornwall and Gloucestershire/Avon herd infection, associated with infected badgers or for which no source of infection could be found, was positively associated with badger sett density. A similar association between herd infection, not attributable to a source of infection, and badger sett density was found in counties in England and Wales outside the south-west region of England.

The coast of Great Britain has many interesting examples of the interaction between tidal estuaries of rivers and the littoral drift of the coast. These have been described with historical detail mainly by geographers (ref.l). Two cases coming to the author's firm for action have interest for coastal engineers. For the River Spey m the Moray Firth of Scotland, a famous and vigorous river, unusual works have been undertaken with success. For Dawlish Warren, a sand spit m the Exe Estuary of Devon m South West England, a scheme of works is being prepared which has novelty in regard to British practices.

AbstractMillimetric, ellipsoidal monazite nodules found within Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks in Wales, south-west England and Brittany are characterised by a pronounced zonation of light and heavy REE, an inclusion fabric of low-grade metamorphic minerals indistinguishable from the host rock and a low Th content. They are interpreted as the product of in situ recrystallization of detrital monazites derived from pegmatitic or granitic source rocks and are potentially useful as indicators of Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary rock provenance.

Arsenic concentrations in estuarine sediments from England and Wales range over three orders of magnitude. The highest concentrations, up to 2500 μg/g, occur in the sediments of estuaries in south west England associated with past or present metalliferous mining activity. Strong correlations exist between arsenic and iron in 1 N-HC1 extracts of different estuarine sediments. The As/Fe ratio in those estuaries not contaminated with mine wastes is 11 × 10−4, increasing to 190 × 10—4 in metalliferous sediments.

The present paper deals with some 30 square miles of land situated in Caernarvonshire and embracing the drainage area of the River Ogwen and parts of adjacent river-basins. It is doubtful if any part of Great Britain presents in such a small area so many interesting topographical features and such beautiful and diversified scenery as this part of North Wales. It is in part a thoroughly mountainous region accompanied by characteristics that belong to mountains, and it is a glaciated mountain region with typical glacial topography. But adjoining the mountains is an area of entirely different characteristics, and the change from the one to the other is sudden and complete. An upland plain abruptly terminates against a range of mountains without the interposition of foot-hills, the crags and pinnacles rising precipitously from the level land; or, in other words, the plain cuts as it were a shelf in the mountainous masses.

The larvae of certain flies belonging to the family Syrphidae have long been recognised as plant pests. Merodon equestris, Fab., was recorded in Great Britain as far back as 1869, having probably been imported in narcissus bulbs from Holland (Verrall). This fly is now universally known as the “ Large Narcissus Fly,” the larvae causing serious losses in nearly every locality where the narcissus is grown commercially. More recently flies of the genus Eumerus have been associated with a type of injury very similar to that caused by the larger fly, and the larvae have been recorded on a variety of host-plants in Europe and America. Chief among these hosts may be included narcissus, onion, hyacinth, parsnip, iris, and potato. The flies are commonly referred to as “ Lesser Bulb Flies ” or alternatively in some parts of North America, where they were first recorded as European introductions in 1904, as “ Lunate Onion Flies.”
