After the generation of multimedia data turning digital, an explosion of interest in their data storage, retrieval, and processing, has drastically increased in the database and data mining community. This includes videos, images, and handwriting, where we now have higher expectations in exploiting these data at hand. We argue however, that much of this work’s narrow focus on efficiency and scalability has come at the cost of usability and effectiveness. Typical manipulations are in some forms of video/image processing, which require fairly large amounts for storage and are computationally intensive. In this work, we will demonstrate how these multimedia data can be reduced to a more compact form, that is, time series representation, while preserving the features of interest, and can then be efficiently exploited in Content-Based Image Retrieval. We also introduce a general framework that learns a distance measure with arbitrary constraints on the warping path of the Dynamic Time Warping calculation. We demonstrate utilities of our approach on both classification and query retrieval tasks for time series and other types of multimedia data including images, video frames, and handwriting archives. In addition, we show that incorporating this framework into the relevance feedback system, a query refinement can be used to further improve the precision/recall by a wide margin.

This paper presents a new knowledge base creation method for personal/collective health data with knowledge of preemptive care and potential risk inspection with a global and geographical mapping and visualization functions of 5D World Map System. The final goal of this research project is a realization of a system to analyze the personal health/bio data and potential-risk inspection data and provide a set of appropriate coping strategies and alert with semantic computing technologies. The main feature of 5D World Map System is to provide a platform of collaborative work for users to perform a global analysis for sensing data in a physical space along with the related multimedia data in a cyber space, on a single view of time-series maps based on the spatiotemporal and semantic correlation calculations. In this application, the concrete target data for world-wide evaluation is (1) multi-parameter personal health/bio data such as blood pressure, blood glucose, BMI, uric acid level etc. and daily habit data such as food, smoking, drinking etc., for a health monitoring and (2) time-series multi-parameter collective health/bio data in the national/regional level for global analysis of potential cause of disease. This application realizes a new multidimensional data analysis and knowledge sharing for both a personal and global level health monitoring and disease analysis. The results are able to be analyzed by the time-series difference of the value of each spot, the differences between the values of multiple places in a focused area, and the time-series differences between the values of multiple locations to detect and predict a potential-risk of diseases.

A common challenge in multimedia data understanding is the unsupervised discovery of recurring patterns, or motifs, in time series data. The discovery of motifs in uni-variate time series is a well studied problem and, while being a relatively new area of research, there are also several proposals for multi-variate motif discovery. Unfortunately, motif search among multiple variates is an expensive process, as the potential number of sub-spaces in which a pattern can occur increases exponentially with the number of variates. Consequently, many multi-variate motif search algorithms make simplifying assumptions, such as searching for motifs across all variates individually, assuming that the motifs are of the same length, or that they occur on a fixed subset of variates. In this paper, we are interested in addressing a relatively broad form of multi-variate motif detection, which seeks frequently occurring patterns (of possibly differing lengths) in sub-spaces of a multi-variate time series. In particular, we aim to leverage contextual information to help select contextually salient patterns and identify the most frequent patterns among all. Based on these goals, we first introduce the contextually salient multi-variate motif (CS-motif) discovery problem and then propose a salient multi-variate motif (SMM) algorithm that, unlike existing methods, is able to seek a broad range of patterns in multi-variate time series.

Google earth with high-resolution imagery basically takes months to process new images before online updates. It is a time consuming and slow process especially for post-disaster application. The objective of this research is to develop a fast and effective method of updating maps by detecting local differences occurred over different time series; where only region with differences will be updated. In our system, aerial images from Massachusetts’s road and building open datasets, Saitama district datasets are used as input images. Semantic segmentation is then applied to input images. Semantic segmentation is a pixel-wise classification of images by implementing deep neural network technique. Deep neural network technique is implemented due to being not only efficient in learning highly discriminative image features such as road, buildings etc., but also partially robust to incomplete and poorly registered target maps. Then, aerial images which contain semantic information are stored as database in 5D world map is set as ground truth images. This system is developed to visualise multimedia data in 5 dimensions; 3 dimensions as spatial dimensions, 1 dimension as temporal dimension, and 1 dimension as degenerated dimensions of semantic and colour combination dimension. Next, ground truth images chosen from database in 5D world map and a new aerial image with same spatial information but different time series are compared via difference extraction method. The map will only update where local changes had occurred. Hence, map updating will be cheaper, faster and more effective especially post-disaster application, by leaving unchanged region and only update changed region.

AbstractThe occurrence of LDE-type flares in the last three cycles has been investigated. The Fourier analysis spectrum was calculated for the time series of the LDE-type flare occurrence during the 20-th, the 21-st and the rising part of the 22-nd cycle. LDE-type flares (Long Duration Events in SXR) are associated with the interplanetary protons (SEP and STIP as well), energized coronal archs and radio type IV emission. Generally, in all the cycles considered, LDE-type flares mainly originated during a 6-year interval of the respective cycle (2 years before and 4 years after the sunspot cycle maximum). The following significant periodicities were found:• in the 20-th cycle: 1.4, 2.1, 2.9, 4.0, 10.7 and 54.2 of month,• in the 21-st cycle: 1.2, 1.6, 2.8, 4.9, 7.8 and 44.5 of month,• in the 22-nd cycle, till March 1992: 1.4, 1.8, 2.4, 7.2, 8.7, 11.8 and 29.1 of month,• in all interval (1969-1992):a)the longer periodicities: 232.1, 121.1 (the dominant at 10.1 of year), 80.7, 61.9 and 25.6 of month,b)the shorter periodicities: 4.7, 5.0, 6.8, 7.9, 9.1, 15.8 and 20.4 of month.Fourier analysis of the LDE-type flare index (FI) yields significant peaks at 2.3 - 2.9 months and 4.2 - 4.9 months. These short periodicities correspond remarkably in the all three last solar cycles. The larger periodicities are different in respective cycles.
