Most central nervous system neurons receive synaptic input from hundreds or thousands of other neurons, and the computational function of such neurons results from the interactions of inputs on a large and complex scale. In most situations that have yielded to a partial analysis, the synaptic inputs to a neuron are not alike in function, but rather belong to distinct categories that differ qualitatively in the nature of their effect on the postsynaptic cell, and quantitatively in the strength of their influence. Many factors have been demonstrated to contribute to synaptic function, but one of the simplest and best known of these is the geometry of the postsynaptic neuron. The fundamental nature of the relationship between neuronal shape and synaptic effectiveness was established on theoretical grounds prior to its experimental verification.

Students of Spanish literature of the first half of the 19th century still stand indebted to Georges Lc Centil for his partial analysis of and index to thirty-one literary journals published in :Madrid between 1803 and 1849. More recently additional light has been thrown on this period through the publication of complete indices for a number of reviews not covered by Le Gentil as well as for several included in his survey. Thus far, however, there has been no planned approach to duplicate the above efforts for the critical transition years, roughly 1850–70, from the decline of romanticism to the triumph of realism. The CSIC series to clate includes only two reviews that afford but partial coverage for these years: the above-cited Semanario pintoresco espanol (1836-57) and Educación pintoresca (1857-59). The latter, moreover, is of scant literary significance.

AbstractBy the early 1970s, the improved accuracy of astrometric and time measurements enabled researchers not only to experimentally compare relativistic gravity with the Newtonian predictions, but also to compare different relativistic gravitational theories (e.g., the Brans-Dicke Scalar-Tensor Theory of Gravitation). For this comparison, Kip Thorne and others developed the Parameterized Post-Newtonian Formalism (PPN), and derived the dependence of different astronomically observable effects on the values of the corresponding parameters.Since then, all the observations have confirmed General Relativity. In other words, the question of which relativistic gravitation theory is in the best accordance with the experiments has been largely settled. This does not mean that General Relativity is the final theory of gravitation: it needs to be reconciled with quantum physics (into quantum gravity), it may also need to be reconciled with numerous surprising cosmological observations, etc. It is, therefore, reasonable to prepare an extended version of the PPN formalism, that will enable us to test possible quantum-related modifications of General Relativity.In particular, we need to include the possibility of violating fundamental principles that underlie the PPN formalism but that may be violated in quantum physics, such as scale-invariance, T-invariance, P-invariance, energy conservation, spatial isotropy violations, etc. In this paper, we present the first attempt to design the corresponding extended PPN formalism, with the (partial) analysis of the relation between the corresponding fundamental physical principles.

Hemodynamic responses of intestinal vascular segments of the dog to intravenous administration of a lethal dose (1 mg/kg) of E. coli endotoxin were investigated. Pressures were measured in large and small vessels of the intestinal and mesentery (small veins 30–60 µ in radius). Vascular radii of submucosal vessels and blood flow were determined. Changes in total resistance in the intestinal circulation after endotoxin were not uniform during the first few minutes, but there was a significant decrease at 10 min and a subsequent rise to the control value after 1 hr. At both 50 and 60 min, the resistance was increased over control in the arterial segment by 50%, increased 500% in the venous segment, and decreased 40% in the segment from small artery to venule. These circumstances would increase capillary pressure and filtration of edema fluid. Increased wall tension at reduced diameter developed in the venous segment during the secondary shock state, whereas relaxation of wall tension occurred in the arteriolar segment.
