Abstract Urgent societal problems, including climate change, require innovation and can benefit from interdisciplinary solutions. A small body of research has demonstrated the potential of positive emotions (e.g., gratitude, awe) to promote creativity and prosocial behavior, which may help address these problems. This study integrates, for the first time, psychology research on a positive and prosocial emotion (i.e., gratitude) with engineering-design creativity research. In a pre-registered study design, engineering students and working engineers (pilot N = 49; full study N = 329) completed gratitude, positive-emotion control, or neutral-control inductions. Design creativity was assessed through rater scores of responses to an Alternate Uses Task (AUT) and a Wind-Turbine-Blade Repurposing Task (WRT). No significant differences among AUT scores emerged across conditions in either sample. While only the pilot-study manipulation of gratitude was successful, WRT results warrant further studies on the effect of gratitude on engineering-design creativity. The reported work may also inform other strategies to incorporate prosocial emotion to help engineers arrive at more original and effective concepts to tackle environmental sustainability, and in the future, other problems facing society.

The work approaches theoretical and implementation issues of a framework for creating and executing Learning Objects (LOs) where problem-solving tasks are ordered according to the matching of two parameters, both calculated automatically: (1) student skill level and (2) problem solution difficulty. They are formally defined as algebraic expressions. The definition of skill level is achieved through a rating-based measure that resembles the ones of game mastery scales, while the solution difficulty is based on mistakes and successes of learners to deal with the problem. An empirical study based on existing students data demonstrated the suitability of the formulas. Besides, the motivational aspects of learning are considered in depth. In this sense, it is important to propose activities according to the student’s level of expertise, which is achieved through presenting students with exercises that are compatible with the difficulty degree of their cognitive skills. Also, the results of an experiment conducted with four highschool classes using the framework for the domain of logarithmic properties are presented.

Two parallel evolutions are currently challenging the functioning and the legitimation of the traditional nation-state: globalization and the rapid development of the information and communication technologies (ICTs). Both come together in the new concept of “electronic governance” or “e-governance.” Indeed, globalization in all its forms (i.e., financial, economic, cultural, technological, and ecological globalizations) is increasingly putting pressure upon the nation-state. Collective problems, such as climate change or organized crime, can no longer be solved by nation-states only, let alone by one single nation-state. In fact, such problems require not only the supra-national approaches and institutions, but also the involvement of non-state actors, in particular of civil society and the private sector. Simultaneously, the ICTs are gradually penetrating all realms and all levels of society, and as such increasingly affect both production processes and state-society transactions. If “governance” can be defined as the growing involvement of non-state actors into collective problem-solving at all levels of society (i.e., from the local to the global levels) (e.g., Finger, 2004; Mayntz, 1999), “e-governance” then means the active usage of the ICTs for such collective problem solving. In this article we want to both offer an understanding what e-governance is and could be and outline of the different dimensions and forces which currently lead up to e-governance practices. Consequently, our article is structured as follows: in a first section, we will present and critically discuss the state of the literature on e-governance. In this chapter we present a model of organization aimed to understand the effect of formal and informal structures on the organization’s performance. The model considers the interplay between the formal hierarchical structure and the social network connecting informally the agents emerging while the organization performs a task-set. The social network creation and evolution is endogenous, as it doesn’t include any function supposed to optimize performance. After a review of the literature, we propose a definition of performance based on the efficiency in allocating the task of a simulated organization that can be considered as a network-based problem-solving system. We analyze how the emergence of a stable process in decomposing tasks under different market conditions can alleviate the rigidity and the inefficiencies of a hierarchical structure and we compare the performance of different hierarchical structures under variable environment conditions.

AbstractThe commentary confirms and builds on Glăveanu’s critical scrutiny of the current stage of creativity research. The need for more actors, theories, methods and definitions will not be fulfilled until critical reflection concerning what has been done and synthesis between different research attempts are achieved. The authors first expand the creativity stage by discussing what will happen in creativity research attempts if we alternate with a “ she, you and they” perspective? They then present a new definition of creativity. Creativity is seen as a collective, generative, novel way of experiencing reality ending with the idea of a shared product that is evaluated as creative in a relevant context. This definition is in line with the development of a new creativity tool or measurement, the Test for Distributed Creativity in Organizational Groups (DOG). The DOG can be used both for measuring the products of creative groups and investigating their processes.

TRIZ, a Russian acronym for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, is an approach for systematic innovation planning. In the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ), the overall aim is the development of an enhanced methodology for a smooth innovation mapping. It is also a way of technology management. The base of TRIZ depends on organisational ecology and sustainability concepts. Should a foundation use this scientific method, then, sustainable innovation can easily occur there. In this paper, conceptualised combinations will be further investigated, tested and applied in subsequent phases and results. The organization of this paper has four major phases. The first part is composed of general terminology, benefits of the method and rules. The second part gives information about the definition of the problem and the details of the way which is used. Concept of the third phase is about the implementation. The results, comments and recommendations form the last phase.Keywords: TRIZ, sustainability, innovation.
