A taxonomic revision of Hibiscus trionum from Egypt was undertaken using morphological and cytological studies of field collections and herbarium specimens. The data indicate that all specimens so far collected in Egypt belong to H. tridactylites, rather than H. trionum. This paper includes a comprehensive description of H. tridactylites, its occurrence, a comparison with other species in the H. trionum complex, and comments on habitat, along with images for easy identification. In addition, chromosome counts for this species from Egypt have been determined for the first time, which add to existing information on chromosome counts for the species from different regions of the world.

An isolate ofFusarium lateritium(Nees) emend. Snyder and Hansen was associated with naturally occurring disease of spurred anoda [Anoda cristata(L.) Schlecht.] and prickly sida (Sida spinosaL.) plants. In greenhouse inoculation studies, theFusariumisolate was pathogenic to healthy spurred anoda and prickly sida plants. The disease symptoms were characterized by leaf, stem, and root lesions. The stem lesions enlarged with time and formed cankers that often girdled the stems and killed inoculated plants. In host-range studies, velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrastiMedic.), Venice mallow (Hibiscus trionumL.), okra [Abelmoschus esculentus(L.) Moench], and hollyhock [Althaea rosea(L.) Cav.] were also susceptible to the pathogen. This is the first report of these six species as hosts for this pathogen. Corn (Zea maysL.), cotton (Gossypium hirsutumL. andG. barbadenseL.), soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.], and 18 other representative crop and weed species in eight families were resistant to the pathogen.F. lateritiummay be a useful biological herbicide for susceptible malvaceous weeds.

The host range of an isolate of the fungal pathogenAlternaria macrosporaZimmerman from infected spurred anoda [Anoda cristata(L.) Schlecht.] leaves was studied in the greenhouse and growth chamber. The fungus was inoculated to representative plants in the Malvaceae, Solanaceae, Leguminosae, and Gramineae families. Evidence of infection was limited to plants in the Malvaceae, with spurred anoda being the most susceptible species tested. Only negligible damage was incited on cotton (Gossypium hirsutumL. ‘Stoneville 213′) and long staple cotton (G. barbadenseL. ‘Pima S–5′), hollyhock [Althaea rosea(L.) Cav.], okra (Hibiscus esculentusL. ‘Clemson spineless’), prickly sida (Sida spinosaL.), velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrastiMedic.), and Venice mallow (Hibiscus trionumL.). Disease symptoms induced in cotton by the spurred anoda isolate ofA. macrosporawere much less severe than those reported for other isolates of the fungus. Therefore, the spurred anoda isolate may be a specialized form of the fungus.

We used experimental pollinations to examine the breeding system and inbreeding depression in Hibiscus trionum L., an annual herb of cultivated and disturbed sites in eastern Australia. Seeds were not produced asexually. Flowers were fully self-compatible and autonomously self-pollinating. Autonomous self-pollination was due to a delayed selfing mechanism that gave precedence to cross pollen but ensured that stigmas contacted the anthers at the end of floral life. Using selfed and crossed progeny from 10 maternal plants, we examined the magnitude and timing of inbreeding depression over a range of life-cycle stages, including seed production by maternal plants, and seed germination, seedling growth, survival, flowering and seed production by F1 plants. Average cumulative inbreeding depression was 0.15, although there was considerable variation among maternal families (δ = –0.07–0.43). Inbreeding depression was not uniform across all life stages and was most prevalent late in the life cycle, affecting days to flowering and fruiting and flower production. Our results indicate that major lethal alleles have been purged from this population, probably through high levels of recurrent self-fertilisation. The flexibility in plant mating afforded by delayed selfing is likely to contribute to the invasiveness of H. trionum, particularly in annual cropping situations.

Postemergence herbicides alone and in combination were evaluated for Venice mallow control in corn and onion in Colorado during 1986 and 1987. Season-long control of 88 to 98% in corn was obtained with bromoxynil plus cyanazine or atrazine; 2,4-D amine plus dicamba or bromoxynil; or linuron, bromoxynil, or dicamba applied alone. Oxyfluorfen plus bromoxynil in a split application controlled Venice mallow 80 to 99% all season in onions. Uncontrolled Venice mallow caused higher yield reductions in onions than in corn.

This study was conducted to gain insight into the soil seedbank dynamics of Venice mallow in two irrigated Colorado soils. Venice mallow plants produced an average of 3100 seeds per plant under noncompetitive irrigated conditions. Venice mallow seeds collected from three regions of Colorado and stored at 25 C averaged 95% dormancy and less than 4% nonviable seeds 6 mo after harvesting. Percent nonviable seeds in soil remained relatively constant over 2 yr. Most seeds germinated within the first 3 mo after burial in the first crop production year. Seed dormancy decreased to an average of 40% after 3 mo of burial in cultivated soil at Fruita and Rocky Ford, and thereafter remained relatively constant for 21 mo. Fruita seeds underwent lessin situgermination than seeds from Greeley or Rocky Ford. Innate seed dormancy was lower at Fruita (27%) than at Rocky Ford (39%). Enforced dormancy remained constant over a 21-mo period and was similar for both locations (32%). Seeds buried for 2 yr at Fruita underwent greaterin situgermination (42%) than at Rocky Ford (27%). At Fruita, the level of enforced dormancy was higher and the level of innate dormancy lower at the 20-cm than the 2-cm depths. Venice mallow seed dormancy likely is due to an impermeable hard seed coat.

Hibiscus trionum, like several other members of the Malvaceae, has flowers with prominent styles which can reflex during the first few hours after opening so that stigmas make contact with the anthers. This self-pollination mechanism can be interrupted if stigmas are pollinated before or during bending. They then maintain or regain the erect position and selfing cannot occur. Various treatments which can affect this reversal of bending are described.
