AbstractResorting to the concepts of urban order and urban context, this paper explores an interpretation of conflicts concerning the uses and modes of appropriation of urban space in the metropolitan zone of Mexico City. To this end, it firstly characterizes a group of historical forms of urban space production that, according with the authors, have given place to four types of “cities” or urban contexts which are differentiated, among other things, because of the dominant spatial conflicts in each case observed. Then it discusses the concept of urban order and proposes an interpretation line of those spatial conflicts that, at present, shape the metropolitan urban order. Finally, it describes and exemplifies the four urban contexts dynamic, considering the ways in which different modalities of urban space organization, uses of public a private spaces, and dominant space conflicts are combined.

In this paper, an approach to geocode tweets published in Spanish is proposed. The tweets are related to traffic events within an urban context of the Mexico City. They are generated by a particular phenomenon for knowing the behavior of the involved geographic entities. In order to disambiguate and verify the consistency of information, an application ontology was defined. Thus, the core goal is to identify location as well as spatial relationships between entities presented in the events, using semantic and spatial analysis of the collected dataset. In consequence, a visualization method for presenting the results was also proposed. The paper describes the methodology for enabling the discovery of spatial patterns within traffic tweets and provides useful information to make timely decisions and contribute in the context of Knowledge Society.

It is the aim of this paper to describe the most important techniques that are being used in Mexico City to retrofit buildings damaged during the 1985 earthquake. The information is presented by means of four case studies. These cases offer practical design examples of the typical solutions adopted and illustrate the various aspects of the repair and strengthening process such as damage assessment, emergency measures for temporary protection, the retrofitting technique employed in each case and considerations and decisions made in the analysis and design.

Abstract Considering schools of architecture as the completion of the pedagogical project in a real physical scenario, this paper will address the weight of memory and the evidence of historical times in architecture schools, while reflecting on the classic, operative or prospective use of history. For a holistic approach to these schools this analysis will focus on the building itself in its relationship with the pedagogical project and the urban context. Hence, this analysis will have three levels of approach, in a triangle: Pedagogy/Architecture/City. Each level will focus on examples of schools, through an enlarged temporal perspective, from different backgrounds and places, whose circumstances would clarify the decision of perpetuating the memory and/or the yearning for innovation. Finally, this paper will provide levels of agreement and dissonance in the dichotomy between memory and innovation for architecture schools, by exploring paradigmatic and idiosyncratic case studies of each level of approach. Thus, it is argued that the approach on memory for the architecture schools as institutions can coincide or differ from the architecture learning processes in the form of their pedagogical project, and the architecture built schools in the form of their built object.

Cities will have a decisive role in reducing the consumption of resources and greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Various experiences of urban regeneration have exploited Information and Communication Technology (ICT) potentialities to optimize the management of complex systems and to encourage sustainable development models. This paper investigates the role of ICT technologies in favouring emerging design for Circular Economy (CE) in the urban context. The paper starts by defining the theoretical background and subsequently presents the goal and methodology of investigation. Through a scoping review, the authors identify case studies and analyse them within the Ellen MacArthur Foundation classification framework that splits the urban context into three urban systems: buildings, mobility and products. The research focuses on nine case studies where the ICT solutions were able to promote the principles of CE. The results show, on the one hand, how data management appears to be a central issue in the optimization of urban processes and, on the other hand, how the district scale is the most appropriate to test innovative solutions. This paper identifies physical and virtual infrastructures, stakeholders and tools for user engagement as key elements for the pursuit of CE adoption in the urban context.

As cities overgrow, the need for ecological restoration is becoming increasingly urgent, especially in densely populated areas. Urban ecological restoration represents the best approach to undertake damages to restore native ecosystem remnants fulfilling biodiversity but also social goals in dense urban settings such as Mexico City. The feasibility of restoring unique xerophytic scrub vegetation in lava field remnants was evaluated in a portion of a university campus in Mexico City. Here we present an index (Need and Feasibility of Restoration Index, NFRI) for such purpose. The NFRI was designed through multicriteria analysis and considered ecological, economic, and social indicators. Cluster and principal components analysis were carried out to identify different groups of lava field remnants with similar characteristics and to point out critical variables that in turn would support management strategies. The outcomes made evident the necessity of restoring native vegetation for all of the evaluated remnants; however, the group containing the largest ones obtained the highest values for restoration feasibility and NFRI. The recovery of the rest of the remnants is critical to support the ecological restoration of the area as this may provide connectivity with better-preserved ecosystem remnants. When the restoration is unaffordable due to financial constraints, it is highly recommended to direct efforts towards ecological rehabilitation actions. The establishment of native xerophytic gardens is promoted when remnants cannot support a self-sustainable plant community. It is crucial to include the diversity of views and values of the community and the economic and ecological aspects to guarantee the sustainability of the landscape, especially in the urban context. The latter can provide better planning and design processes, ensuring benefits for humans and nature.
