The implementation of seismic risk assessment of existing structures is necessitated for practical engineers to select the retrofitting strategies. The reliability based approaches are proposed to investigate the behaviour of structures subjected to ground excitation and encouraging evaluation results of various typologies of structures have been obtained exploiting such methodologies. The decision regarding the retrofitting strategies that will rehabilitate the flaws of the structure under prescribed ground motions that have high probability of occurrences at the scenario can be made. This paper addresses the generation of hazard curve by probabilistic seismic hazard analysis from the seismological point of view. The multiple stripe analysis, as one of typical probabilistic based assessment procedures, will be utilized to evaluate the structural seismic fragility. The seismic risk can be estimated based on the numerically integrating the fragility function with the hazard curve.

The most important reliability approaches affecting sustainability in construction consist of the target reliability levels, verification methods, and construction or intervention procedures. The optimum target reliability levels can be specified based on probabilistic optimisation considering sustainability aspects including building costs, expected economic, social, and environmental consequences of construction, and possible failures. It appears that the derived reliability levels are strongly dependent on sustainability aspects and may be lower for the assessment of existing structures than for the design of new structures. The most efficient verification methods are based on advanced probabilistic approaches, including risk assessment methods considering actual properties of the structure and related failure consequences. It has been shown that sustainability in construction may be significantly affected by the design and assessment methods. The case study demonstrates that advanced reliability approaches commonly save 10–20% of the consumption of structural materials and natural resources.

Purpose The purpose of this article is to address some common concerns associated with the neurodiversity paradigm and to offer related implications for service provision to school-age autistic students. In particular, we highlight the need to (a) view first-person autistic perspectives as an integral component of evidence-based practice, (b) use the individualized education plan as a means to actively address environmental contributions to communicative competence, and (c) center intervention around respect for autistic sociality and self-expression. We support these points with cross-disciplinary scholarship and writings from autistic individuals. Conclusions We recognize that school-based speech-language pathologists are bound by institutional constraints, such as eligibility determination and Individualized Education Program processes that are not inherently consistent with the neurodiversity paradigm. Consequently, we offer examples for implementing the neurodiversity paradigm while working within these existing structures. In sum, this article addresses key points of tension related to the neurodiversity paradigm in a way that we hope will directly translate into improved service provision for autistic students.
