Abstract This article discusses whether it is possible to frame anti-refugee discourse on social media as a form of populism by analysing the case study of the hashtag #ülkemdesuriyeliistemiyorum (#IdontwantSyriansinmycountry), which emerged on Twitter in Turkey in 2016. Both network analysis and discourse analysis are used in order to delineate the characteristics of the tropes associated with the hashtag, to identify the existence of populist elements, as well as to scrutinize the linkage of the hashtag with the broader political context. The study shows that some elements of a populist discourse clearly exist (simple and popular discourse, anti-foreigner), while some others are missing (the existence of a leader). Most importantly, the discussion of the other elements (dichotomous views, othering and anti-elite) highlight the need to better conceptualize and contextualize these features to understand the connection between anti-elite (populism) and anti-foreigner discourses (nativism), the impact of tagged tropes such as a hashtag that can poke holes in echo chambers and the distinction between the concepts of anti-elitism and anti-establishment (especially in specific political contexts such as Turkey).

The researchers have explored the role of print media and social media to present the social, cultural and political ideologies through the support of liberal feminist women in Aurat March 2019–2020. Moreover, the researchers have identified the connection/s between the language and power in the construction of ideologies, specifically through the media (print and social media). Print media, specifically print social media, has a negative impact due to its lesser amount of validity and a positive keeping wide coverage. For this study, researchers took three articles from three different local newspapers about the specific topic “Aurat March”. These articles along with the posters (which were present in the specific articles) of Aurat March have been analyzed. The researchers collected the data through a qualitative approach and purposive sampling. The research is exploratory and multi-directional. Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis is used for the analysis. The findings of the study have suggested that media discourse is intentionally crafted to create specific ideologies. As media has created and represented different socio-cultural ideologies in Aurat March. Media can play a positive and negative role in language and power. However, the impact of the media’s ideologies is depending on the feedback of the concerned society.

The research was aimed to know the impact of a written expression through social media toward the people who read it. The analysis was performed in accordance with the theories of strategy, discourse analysis, and critical discourse analysis put by Wodak and Meyer (2001) and Renkema (2009), and the theories of internet and language by Crystal (2004). The data were taken from the page of Ridwan Kamil, Mayor of Bandung in that social media. The research needed to see the strategy in his status update (written expression). From the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) point of view, it can be understood the way people transfer their ideas and thoughts showed their power and influenced the people through some certain strategies. The results of the research show (1) all strategies are used in his status update, namely the referential/nomination, the predication, the argumentation, the perspectivation and the intensification strategies, (2) there are always some implicit and explicit intentions that are shared through the status update, and (3) there are some certain aspects that affect the readers of the status update.

 The conspiracy theory allows non-existent information to be exist. Likewise with propaganda which causes information to roll without being able to ascertain its correctness because its purpose is to manipulate public opinion. This study aims to see the complexity of the fight against the Covid-19 discourse in Indonesian society. This study used a qualitative method with a critical discourse analysis approach. Data collection was obtained from online media and social media, especially Twitter in the April 2020 period. The data were analyzed by using the Critical Discourse Analysis model of Fairclough. The result of this study indicated that it was not enough for the Covid-19 outbreak to be reported as a natural virus, but to be explored into a controversial discourse in the form of a conspiracy theory. The propaganda of the Covid-19 conspiracy theory was carried out through social media. Belief in conspiracy theory was caused by three things, they were people needed definite and reasonable answer to the phenomenon of the Covid-19 pandemic, they wanted to have control over their lives, and the impact of Post Truth era. Keywords: Propaganda, Conspiracy Theory, Discourse, Covid-19

The Swiss Armed Forces (SAF), as part of a democratic system, depends on legitimacy. Democracy, legitimacy and the public are closely connected. In the public sphere the SAF need to be visible; it is where they are controlled and legitimated by the citizens, as part of a deliberative discussion in which political decisions are communicatively negotiated. Considering this, the meaning of political communication, including the SAF’s communication, becomes obvious as it forms the most important basis for political legitimation processes. Social media provide a new way for the SAF to communicate and interact directly with the population. The SAF’s social media communication potentially brings it closer to the people and engages them in a dialogue. The SAF can become more transparent and social media communication may increase its reputation and legitimacy. To measure the effects of social media communication, a survey of the Swiss internet population was conducted. Based on this data, a structural equation model was defined, the effects of which substantiate the assumption that the SAF benefits from being on social media in terms of broadening its reach and increasing legitimacy values.
