Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020) may feature entertaining performances and his trademark wit, but it differs so much from its real-life story that it becomes more liberal fantasy than historical narrative.

This film follows the real-life story of the kidnapping of mega-rich John Paul Getty’s grandson, who was held in a remote area in Italy. Kevin Spacey was cast and filmed as Getty. After the film was complete, a major scandal broke out concerning allegations of the actor’s sexual misconduct. Scott made the difficult decision to remake the parts of the movie in which Spacey had appeared, an extensive undertaking. Veteran actor Christopher Plummer took on the role. Scott was applauded for his moral stance and for pulling off a major cinematic feat―he completed the reshoots and editing just before the release date.

White Squall is based on the book The Last Voyage of the Albatross, co-written by Chuck Gieg, who was a survivor of a prep school ship that sank during treacherous weather on the high seas. The voyage was planned to expose young men to different locales as they studied academic subjects during the trip. They also were part of the ship’s crew and learned to be seamen. White Squall is a rare successful re-creation of the early 1960s: the dawn of an era that saw much change but still maintained its innocence. Much of this picture was shot on a real schooner at sea. Scott directed many strong performances, especially from Jeff Bridges playing Captain Christopher “Skipper” Sheldon. The boys represent many different personality types and all are impacted by the voyage and the crew. The white squall event left many dead. In the real-life story, no punishment was given to the skipper, but Scott decided to end the film on a dramatic note so a fictional scene was created. Here the skipper faces a tribunal with his license at risk. The boys come to his aid with solid support and the issue is then resolved.

The study was a linguistic examination of the use of lexical cohesive devices in Ngugi Wa Thiong ’O’s Decolonising the Mind- an autobiography. The study was aimed at revealing how Ngugi - an African L2 writer, deployed lexical cohesive devices to achieve cohesion and coherence and how this has contributed to the meaning of his non- fictional essay. The study was guided by the theoretical framework of Halliday’s tripartite metafunctions of language: the ideational, the interpersonal and the textual, with closer inclination to the textual metafunction that deals with text creation. Cohesion is understood in this study as a textual strategy deployed in language use to unify sentences into a text (a unified whole), that renders the speech or writing both readable and meaningful. A total of 29 excerpts, selected from relevant sections of the essay were descriptively analysed. Our analysis revealed that Ngugi made effective use of lexical cohesive devices to tie his text together, thereby succeeded in passing his message clearly to his readers. Our findings also showed a preponderant use of reiteration (near synonym) - 13 times, and repetition -8 times, by the writer, probably to achieve emphasis. Other lexical devices deployed by the writer to achieve various textual and communicative functions include: antonyms 4 times; superordinate/hyponym, 2 times; and complementaries and co-hyponym, 1 each, in crafting his essay, in which he tells a real- life story of his people, his culture and his heritage. Ngugi, by his effective use of cohesive devices along paradigmatic and syntagmatic axis, has demonstrated that an African writer can also, through the medium of biographical writing, project, not only his ideology, but also the exultation of his people, his culture and his inheritance by a skillful and near – native use of the English language. The study made a case for a systematic teaching of cohesive devices at all levels of education as that will improve reading and comprehension and the aver all communicative competence of L2 learners of English.

This article aims to analyze the struggle of Yogamaya, the lead female character of the novel Yogamāyā, by Neelam Karki Niharika. The novel based on the real life story of a rebel, Yogamaya, chronicles the incidents of her life that triggered her to cast off her feminine self and rebel for the establishment of a just society based on equity. The article examines those factors that force Yogamaya to rebel against the existing society and the process of her rebellion drawing insights form Helen Cixous and other feminists who find patriarchal gender roles based on binary opposition as oppressive, and suggest that women should act beyond gender binary and subvert the patriarchal norms and values that restrict them in every walk of their lives. I use transliteration and free translation while citing from the novel in the analysis. The finding of the article suggests that a number of factors instigate Yogamaya cast of her feminine self and emerge as a rebel. It helps to understand how Yogamaya subverts patriarchy within its bound exposing the inherent biasness in it.

French cartoonist and filmmaker Joann Sfar has often used the comics medium to reflect on visual representation. His latest bande dessinée, Chagall en Russie ['Chagall in Russia'] (2010-2011), continues some of the meta-pictural elements previously found in his Pascin (2000-2002), which already featured Chagall in several episodes, as well as his acclaimed series, The Rabbi's Cat, where Sfar introduced the character of an anonymous Russian painter, whose biography and artistic stance seemingly referred to that of Marc Chagall. Although Chagall en Russie explicitly refers to the real-life Franco-Russian modernist painter, it is certainly not a standard biographical exercise. By offering a synthetic and often symbolic version of personal and historical events experienced by Chagall, Sfar takes certain liberties with the painter's life story as it was outlined by the artist (in My Life, his 1922 autobiography) and by many biographers and art historians. Sfar does not seek an authentic depiction of his subject's verifiable life journey, but rather views it through a metaphorical narrative, which is itself inspired by Chagall's artistic universe and raises questions about the figurative possibilities of comics.

This study sought to determine the usefulness of interrupted case studies, utilizing a progressive disclosure of information over time, to increase critical thinking and student learning in the study of foundational theories in the human development field. Apted’s (2013) Up documentary series, consisting of video interviews over a 49-year period, was used as the interrupted study and successfully provided vicarious, but meaningful, opportunities to consistently and authentically apply course content. Participants (N = 23) were students in three sections of a graduate Human Development course where a pre-/post-test format was utilized. The effect was significant as all participant’s posttest score improved an average of 24.3%, F(3, 19) = 3.55, p = .049. Also, coded student work indicated an increase in complex levels of thinking across the 8-week assignment, further validating post-test scores, t(352) = -3.172, p = .002. Evidence from student work further confirmed that an interrupted video case-study, could address limitations typically associated with case-based instruction and, more importantly, provide the critical case-study qualities needed here. Those included, telling a detailed, ambiguous, and real-life story that provided genuine context to connect theory and practice.
