This study discusses cohesion, coherence, and schematic in the text of the Bali Post reader's letters. Reader's letters contain short letters written by the public with topics that are in accordance with the current situation and related to the public interest. The choice of topics related to Covid-19 is due to the fact that currently many people are writing their complaints due to the Covid-19 pandemic or expressions of praise related to handling Covid-19 which are conveyed through letters to readers of Bali Post. The reader's letter written by the community is interesting to analyze in terms of cohesion, coherence and schematic. The purpose of this study was to determine the tools of cohesion, coherence and schematic of the text of the Bali Post reader's letter. The methods and techniques of data collection used in this study are the method of listening to the technique of note taking. At the data analysis stage, the distribution method and the matching method were used with the deletion and substitution techniques. The theoretical basis used in this research is discourse theory in which there is cohesion proposed by Halliday and R. Hasan (1976:4), coherence proposed by Kridalaksana (in Mulyana, 2005:32) and schematic/superstructure analysis. proposed by Van Dijk (in Eriyanto, 2012:229). Based on the analysis, the following results were found. First, it was found the use of cohesion tools, both grammatical cohesion consisting of reference, substitution, deletion, and concatenation as well as lexical cohesion consisting of repetition, word equivalents, opposites, synonyms, and equivalence. Second, the elements of coherence found include cause-and-effect relationships, means-result relationships, cause-reason relationships, means-end relationships, conclusions-setting relationships, slack-result relationships, conditional-result relationships, comparative relationships, and relationships paraphrastic, amplification relationship, time/temporal additive relationship, nontime/temporal additive relationship, identification relationship, generic-specific relationship, and like relationship. Third, a schematic of the text was found consisting of a title structure, opening structure, content structure, and closing structure.

Numerous studies have revealed how Lexical Cohesion supported the fulfilment of political leaders’ persuasion intention in their rhetoric. The purpose of this study was to cross-culturally explore President Obama’s and President Buhari’s Inaugural Speeches to examine the impact of culture on the persuasive functions of Lexical Cohesion in their rhetoric. Therefore, while drawing on Pragmatics, the study adopted a qualitative discourse analysis approach, utilised an eclectic framework of Lexical Cohesion based on Hoey (1991), Martin (1992) and Eggins (2004) to analyse Obama’s and Buhari’s first inaugural speeches. The findings indicate, on one hand, that although Obama deployed more categories and more frequencies of Lexical Cohesion than Buhari did, ‘Repetition’ (50%) was the most dominant source of Lexical Cohesion in each of the two speeches. Moreover, the most reiterated item in the two speeches were personal pronouns, where Obama mostly repeated the pronoun ‘we’, which had inclusive function, and Buhari mostly repeated ‘I’ and the exclusive ‘we’. On the other hand, the findings suggest that Obama utilised Lexical Cohesion mainly for ‘emotional appeals’, ‘audience involvement’, and ‘credibility-building strategies’; while Buhari used Lexical Cohesion for ‘emphasizing his (and his team’s) personal commitment’, ‘building his credibility’, and ‘demonizing past administrations’. Finally, in the light of these findings, the study has drawn two major conclusions: (1) that on the preponderance of repetition of personal pronouns in both the two speeches, the findings suggest that the generic conventions of the use of personalised English in the inaugural address outweigh any culture-specific discourse practices of the two communities; (2) that Obama’s strategies of emotional appeals and audience involvement that enabled him to ‘speak along with his audience’, which contrast with Buhari’s strategies of emphasizing personal commitment and audience-exclusive tone that made him to ‘speak alone’, seem to have rendered Obama’s speech more interactional and more audience-engaging than Buhari’s speech.

Automated text complexity assessment tools are of enormous practical value in solving the time-consuming task of analyzing English informational texts for their complexity at the pre-reading stage. The present study depicts the application of the automated text analysis system the TextEvaluator as an effective tool that helps analyze texts on eight dimensions of text complexity as follows: syntactic complexity; academic vocabulary; word unfamiliarity; word concreteness; lexical cohesion; interactive style; level of argumentation; degree of narrativity, with further summarizing them with an overall genre-dependent complexity score. This research examines the complexity dimensions of English informational texts of four genres – legal, linguistic, news, and medical – that are used for teaching reading comprehension to EFL (English as a foreign language) pre-service teachers and translators at universities in Ukraine. The data obtained with the help of the TextEvaluator has shown that English legal texts are the most difficult for reading comprehension in comparison to linguistic, news, and medical texts. In contrast, medical texts are the least challenging out of the four genres compared. The TextEvaluator has provided insight into the complexity of English informational texts across their different genres that would be useful for assembling the corpora of reading passages scaled on specific dimensions of text complexity that predict text difficulty to EFL pre-service teachers and translators.
