This chapter provides an overview of the use of adaptive training technology within the military domain. Throughout the chapter, we will discuss the use of intelligent tutoring, adaptive interactive multimedia instruction, and their combination to form closed-loop adaptive training. Frequently, the discussion of a particular approach will be illustrated with one or more case-studies. Moreover, we will explore impediments to widespread adoption of these interventions throughout the military, methods to overcome these impediments, and the migration of this technology into other domains. We will conclude by summarizing trends that are likely to characterize on-going development. Rather than providing a comprehensive review of technology-enhanced learning in the military, which is likely to be outdated before it is published, the author hopes that this illustrative review will open new avenues of thought for researchers, developers, and purchasers of these systems.

Sensors can monitor physical attributes and record multimodal data in order to provide feedback. The application calligraphy trainer, exploits these affordances in the context of handwriting learning. It records the expert’s handwriting performance to compute an expert model. The application then uses the expert model to provide guidance and feedback to the learners. However, new learners can be overwhelmed by the feedback as handwriting learning is a tedious task. This paper presents the pilot study done with the calligraphy trainer to evaluate the mental effort induced by various types of feedback provided by the application. Ten participants, five in the control group and five in the treatment group, who were Ph.D. students in the technology-enhanced learning domain, took part in the study. The participants used the application to learn three characters from the Devanagari script. The results show higher mental effort in the treatment group when all types of feedback are provided simultaneously. The mental efforts for individual feedback were similar to the control group. In conclusion, the feedback provided by the calligraphy trainer does not impose high mental effort and, therefore, the design considerations of the calligraphy trainer can be insightful for multimodal feedback designers.

Interdisciplinary working is often understood as involving individuals or teams from different disciplines to engage with common problems, but this has proved to be an enduring challenge. An alternative framing of interdisciplinary working is Hall's ‘culture of inquiry’, in which it is conceptualised as narrative creation in an environment of formative critique. This paper explores the relevance and applicability of this idea to educational research and development, specifically in the context of purportedly interdisciplinary TEL projects. It draws on the author's experience in projects in which multiple narratives — pedagogical, technological and social — have the potential to contribute to both to individual and collective understanding and the development of new practice.

Faculty development programs are critical to the implementation and support of curriculum innovation. In this case study, the authors present lessons learned from ten years of experience in faculty development programs created to support innovation in technology enhanced learning. Stages of curriculum innovation are matched to stages of faculty development, and important lessons for success as well as current challenges are delineated and discussed.
