Predicting the Fatigue Life of Offshore Structures by the Single-Moment Spectral Method

<p>Magnetic surveys are commonly used for solving variety of geotechnical and geological challenges in offshore areas, jointly with a set of other geophysical methods. The most popular technique employed is hydromagnetic surveying with towed magnetometers. One of the most significant challenges encountered during processing of the magnetic data is related to temporal variations of the Earth's magnetic field. Accounting for diurnal magnetic field variations is often done by carrying out differential hydromagnetic surveys, a technique developed in the 1980-s. It is based on simultaneous measurements of the magnetic field using two sensors towed behind the vessel with a given separation. This technique allows to calculate along-course gradient which is free of magnetic field temporal variations. This measurement system resembles a gradiometer, with the distance between two sensors being referred to as the base of the gradiometer. It is possible to calculate anomalous magnetic field by integrating obtained magnetic field gradient. Studies have shown that accuracy of its reconstruction decreases with increasing base of the gradiometer. This becomes most significant when distance between the sensors and sources of magnetic field anomalies is small. This situation occur when the survey area is located in shallow water (i.e. for shallow marine, river or lake surveys).</p><p>An approach for deriving magnetic anomalies and accounting for diurnal variations in differential hydromagnetic surveys based on the frequency (spectral) representation of the measurements was proposed in 1987 [Melikhov, 1987]. This approach utilizes the fact that it is possible to reconstruct the spectrum of magnetic field anomalies along the vessel course from the spectra of measured signals from the first S<sub>1</sub>(ω) and second S<sub>2</sub>(ω) sensors. Assuming that the sensors are located at the same depth, it can be achieved via the following transform:</p><p><img src="https://contentmanager.copernicus.org/fileStorageProxy.php?f=gepj.3d3911bac60061487501161/sdaolpUECMynit/12UGE&app=m&a=0&c=ff23bad5ed5181be02f7ef7ab5e8d6e4&ct=x&pn=gepj.elif&d=1" alt="" width="192" height="43"></p><p>where ω - spatial frequency, <em>l</em> - base of the gradiometer, and <em>i</em> - imaginary unit. Assuming that at a single moment in time magnetic field variations equally affect both sensors, resulting Fourier spectrum T(ω) will correspond the spectrum of anomalous magnetic field, free of the magnetic variations. It should be noted that, similar to the along-course gradient integration approach, anomalous magnetic field is restored to a certain accuracy level.</p><p>Estimates made on model examples showed that accuracy of the field reconstruction using this method is comparable to the accuracy levels of modern marine magnetic surveys (±1-3 nT). It could be noted that for gradiometer bases comparable or larger than depths to magnetic anomaly sources, errors of the field reconstruction are significantly lower for the spectral transformation-based approach compared to along-course gradient integration.</p><p>References:</p><p>Melikhov V.R., Bulychev A.A., Shamaro A.M. This paper highlights the key differences in practices employed in managing hull structure integrity of permanently moored floating offshore structures as against sailing vessels which are subject to periodic dry docking. During the design phase, the structural integrity management over the life of a sailing vessel is primarily taken into account by means of Class prescribed Nominal Design Corrosion Values which are added to minimum scantling requirements calculated based on strength and fatigue criteria. In contrast, for permanently moored offshore installations like FPSOs, FSOs etc. the hull structure integrity over the entire design life of the asset is a key design consideration both for new buildings and conversions. Analytic methods and tools (primarily those developed by Class Societies) are available to evaluate the strength requirements (based on yielding, buckling and ultimate strength criteria) and fatigue life of the hull structure. Typically three levels of analysis with increasing degree of complexity and analysis time are used to predict the structural response and fatigue life of the Hull during design phase. The degree of detailed analysis required needs to be determined in light of the expected optimization in terms of savings in scantlings for new building or for steel renewal requirements in case of conversions.

The paper presents experimental static and fatigue tests results under random loading conditions for the bending of 0H18N9 steel. The experimental results were used in performing calculations, according to the theoretical assumptions of the spectral method of fatigue life assessment, including elastoplastic deformations. The presented solution extends the use of the spectral method for material fatigue life assessment, in terms of loading conditions, above Hooke’s law theorem. The work includes computational verification of the proposal to extend the applicability of the spectral method of determining fatigue life for the range of elastoplastic deformations. One of the aims of the proposed modification was to supplement the stress amplitudes used to calculate the probability density function of the power spectral density of the signal with correction, due to the plastic deformation and its use for notched elements. The authors have tested the method using four of the most popular probability density functions used in commercial software. The obtained results of comparisons between the experimental and calculation results show that the proposed algorithm, tested using the Dirlik, Benasciutti–Tovo, Lalanne, and Zhao–Baker models, does not overestimate fatigue life, which means that the calculations are on the safe side. The obtained results prove that the elastoplastic deformations can be applied within the frequency domain for fatigue life calculations.

In a joint project of a German working group supported by the ECSC and the Studiengesellschaft fu¨r Stahlanwendung e.V., the fatigue behavior of large-scale hybrid tubular joints with inserts manufactured from the high-strength cast steel GS-12 MnMo 7 4 welded into tubular members formed from the fine-grained steel StE 500 were compared to the behavior of large-scale welded tubular joints. The latter were made from medium-strength fine-grained steel StE 355 and high-strength StE 690. In addition, data from hybrid joints with cast steel inserts of medium-strength GS-8 Mn 7 welded into StE 355 tubulars is available for comparison. The tests were carried out under variable amplitude loading in artificial seawater. The results were evaluated for the failure criteria fatigue life to crack initiation (a = 1 mm) and through crack. With medium-strength (Rp0.2 > 355 N/mm2) hybrid tubulars, where by the use of cast steel inserts the welds were removed into areas of lower stress concentration, fatigue lives higher than a factor of 100 were achieved compared to the welded nodes, even those made from StE 690. However, by the use of high-strength (Rp0.2 > 500 N/mm2) cast steel inserts and tubular members of corresponding strength, the fatigue life to crack initiation was improved by a factor of two despite a thickness reduction compared to the medium-strength design. Post-weld treatments of the welded tubulars without cast steel inserts like shot-peening, TIG-dressing, or their combination resulted only in a slight increase of fatigue life. The results of this investigation do not only show how to improve the fatigue life by a new design using cast steel inserts, but indicate also how to revise design codes from the point of damage calculation (damage sum of 0.50 for welded nodes and 0.25 for cast steel inserts instead of the conventional value of 1.00), as well as consideration of fatigue life to initiation of a technically detectable crack with a defined depth e.g., a = 1 mm.

Abstract Design life of offshore structures is in general in the 20-30 years range, with some cases going up to 50 years. Fatigue is one of the major design criteria for such structures. Climate change may affect the fatigue life of offshore structures, it would be necessary to update the design procedures to take into account climate change effects on structural performance. This paper aims to investigate the impact of climate change in the long-term fatigue life of offshore structures due to wave loading. For this purpose, available environmental conditions for two locations (South East Brazilian Coast and North Atlantic Ocean) generated by the HadGEM-2S global climate model, considering RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 (Representative Concentration Pathway - RCP) future scenarios and the historical (past) scenarios are considered. The assessment in both locations is performed for two structural models: an idealized stress spectrum for a generic fatigue hot-spot and a Steel Lazy Wave Riser (SLWR) connected to a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO). Fatigue life is estimated using the S-N curve approach. Results show that the impact on the fatigue life depends on the structure dynamic characteristics, on the geographic location and mainly on the greenhouse emission scenario. In general, for the Brazilian location, when compared to the historical scenario, most of the future scenarios lead to slightly higher fatigue damages (lower fatigue lives). On the other hand, for the North Atlantic location, there is not a clear trend for future climate change scenarios.
