Teaching Knowledge Modeling at the Graduate Level — A Case Study

This chapter is a teaching case study which draws on Kolb's experiential learning model and Latour's Actor-Network theory, specifically, the ideas of learning as a process rather than as an outcome and of technological space as a cross-cultural network actor. The authors report on a collaboration between undergraduate-level students at a US university and graduate-level students at a Russian university within the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project originated to set up international academic collaborations. The chapter provides a theoretically grounded description of the project's successes and failures as well as guidance for teachers wishing to use experiential learning through networking as an instruction tool.

In developing countries, the number of experts and students in geo-informatics domain are very limited compared to experts and students of sciences that could benefit from geo-informatics. In this research, we study the possibility of providing an online education system for teaching geo-informatics at under-graduate level. The hypothesis is that in developing countries, such as Iran, a web-based geo-education system can greatly improve the quantity and quality of knowledge of students in undergraduate level, which is an important step that has to be made in regard of the famous "Geo for all" motto. As a technology for conducting natural and social studies, geo-informatics offers new ways of viewing, representing and analysing information for transformative learning and teaching. Therefore, we design and present a conceptual framework of an education system and elaborate its components as well as the free and open source services and software packages that could be used in this framework for a specific case study: the Web GIS course. The goal of the proposed framework is to develop experimental GI-services in a service-oriented platform for education purposes. Finally, the paper ends with concluding remarks and some tips for future research direction.

Abstract In today’s information age, the informatization of education requires teachers to become a new type of teacher with information capabilities. The subject teaching knowledge of integrated technology is the knowledge basis for the professionalization of teachers in the information age. This research aims to analyze Pre-service teachers’ perception of Technological, Pedagogical, and Mathematical knowledge. This research adopts the case study method, using Questionnaires for data collection tools. The sample of this research is 84 pre-service teachers from Guangxi Normal University, China. The respondents are undergraduate and master students that are chosen randomly. The instrument used is 20 questionnaire items on pre-service teachers’ perception of their TPMK ability. The data was processed by using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The research result shows that pre-service teachers have a good Technological Pedagogical Mathematical Knowledge ability but their Technological knowledge is still lacking. Teacher education programs should provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to develop TPMK to integrate technology into teaching effectively.

In the context of higher education institutions in Indonesia, some of schools authority refuses the implementation of mobile learning. Although m-learning is widely used in some school in Indonesia and considered as an effective educational tool, it is not yet fully utilized in most Indonesian school. Before designing a mobile learning system, it is necessary to assess the perception of target users towards mobile learning since their perception will influence the successful the system. This research aims to investigate the perception of students of educational technology program who currently are being teachers in several level of educations towards mobile learning to ascertain their readiness to apply a mobile learning system in their teaching. The respondents of this study are 18 teachers who are being students of Magister Program on Educational Technology in e-learning & mobile learning class in even semester. This research is conducted with a survey related to implementation of mobile learning. The results show that teachers in Indonesia had positive perception and were looking forward to apply mobile learning in their teaching. Knowledge and learning method issues were not obstacles for them to use a mobile learning as well as financial obstacle. The readiness for mobile learning of teachers are vary based on the school level even though they have been taught mobile learning subject. The findings surprisingly show that accessibility of device may be a big problem on implementing mobile learning in class.

There has been much hype around online education creating a revolution in education. Studies analyzing the use of distance education at the graduate level have been limited. This article uses Kansas State University's Master of Agribusiness program as a case study. Educational theory related to a distance environment is studied. Development and technology issues related to the Master of Agribusiness program are presented followed by survey information from students. Appropriate administrative and management practices that govern a program are essential to the success of the program.
