The paper deals with numerical modeling of delamination of laminate plate consists of unidirectional fiber reinforced layers. The methodology adopts the first-order shear laminate plate theory and fracture and contact mechanics. There are described sublaminate modeling and delamination modeling by the help of finite element analysis. With the interface modeling there is calculated the energy release rate along the lamination front. Numerical results are given for mixed mode delamination problems by implementing the method in a 2D finite analysis, which utilizes shear deformable plate elements and interface elements. Numerical example is done by the commercial ANSYS code.

Abstract The application of stabilized finite element methods to model the vibration of elastic plates coupled with an acoustic fluid medium is considered. New stabilized methods based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle with a generalized least-squares modification are developed which yield improvement in accuracy over the Galerkin and Galerkin Generalized Least Squares (GGLS) finite element methods for both in vacuo and acoustic fluid-loaded Reissner-Mindlin plates. Through judicious selection of design parameters this formulation provides a consistent framework for enhancing the accuracy of mixed Reissner-Mindlin plate elements. Combined with stabilization methods for the acoustic fluid, the method presents a new framework for accurate modeling of acoustic fluid-loaded structures. The technique of complex wave-number dispersion analysis is used to examine the accuracy of the discretized system in the representation of free-waves for fluid-loaded plates. The influence of different finite element approximations for the fluid-loaded plate system are examined and clarified. Improved methods are designed such that the finite element dispersion relations closely match each branch of the complex wavenumber loci for fluid-loaded plates. Comparisons of finite element dispersion relations demonstrate the superiority of the hybrid least-squares (HLS) plate elements combined with stabilized methods for the fluid over standard Galerkin methods with mixed interpolation and shear projection (MITC4) and GGLS methods.

This study investigates the “Effects of Variable Non-Central Locations of Bonded Double Doubler Joint System on Free Flexural Vibrations of Orthotropic Composite Mindlin Plate or Panel Adherents”. The problem is theoretically analyzed and is numerically solved in terms of the natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the entire “System”. The “Bonded Double Doubler Joint System” and the “Plate of Panel Adherents” are considered as dissimilar “Orthotropic Mindlin Plates”. In all plate elements, the transverse shear deformations and the transverse and rotary moments of inertia are included in the analysis. The relatively very thin adhesive layers in the “Bounded Joint Region” are assumed to be linearly elastic continua with transverse normal and shear deformations. The “damping effects” in the adhesive layers and in all plate elements of the “System” are neglected. The sets of the “Dynamic Mindlin Equations” of both upper and lower “Doubler Plates” and the “Plate or Panel Adherents” and the adhesive layer equations are combined together with the orthotropic stress resultant-displacement expressions resulting in a set of “Governing System of PDE’s” in a “special form”. By making use of the “Classical Levy’s Solutions”, in aforementioned “Governing PDE’s” and following some algebraic manipulations and combinations, the “Governing System of the First Order Ordinary Differential Equations” are obtained in compact “state vector” forms. Thus, the “Initial and Boundary Value Problem” at the beginning is finally converted into a “Multi-Point Boundary Value Problem” of Mechanics (and Physics). These analytical results developed facilitate the present method of solution that is the “Modified Transfer Matrix Method (MTMM) (with Interpolation Polynomials)”. The final set of the “Governing System of ODE’s” is numerically integrated by means of the “MTMM with Interpolation Polynomials”. In this way, the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the “Bonded System”, depending on the variable non-central location of the “Bonded Double Doubler Joint System” are computed for several sets of the far left and the far right “Boundary Conditions” of the “Orthotropic Plate or Panel Adherents”. It was observed that, based on the numerical results, the mode shapes and their natural frequencies are very much affected by the variable position (or location) of the “Bonded Double Doubler Joint” in the “System”. It was also found that as the “Bonded Double Doubler Joint” moves from the central position in the “System” towards the increasingly non-central position, the natural frequencies (in comparison with those of the central position) changes, respectively. The highly-stiff “Bonded Double Doubler Joint Region” becomes “almost stationary” in all modes in “Hard” Adhesive cases.

A robust methodology to simulate virtually the residual stresses pattern in welded steel plates is presented. The methodology is applied to the structural analysis of typical welded plates belonging to ship structures, and the effect of residual stresses on the elastoplastic behavior of plates loaded axially is analyzed in comparison to the residual stress free case, both for tension and compression and including initial imperfections. Residual stresses affect in different manner plates with different geometries; thus a parametric study is performed covering the usual range of variation of the most important plate parameters that control the strength of the plates, more precisely the slenderness and the aspect ratio. The results from finite elements analysis are compared with codes and most established formulations and recommendations of applicability in the prediction of load-shortening curves for hull’s bending strength evaluation, ultimate strength and ultimate strain of plate elements are made.
