An emerging trend in education research methods is to integrate digital technologies into the research process. Electronic focus groups represent one such innovation. Drawing on four examples of research and practice undertaken using a synchronous, digital system, this chapter reflects on how an innovative tool can assist in focus group research in the fields of school and higher education. The examples presented illustrate how some of the theoretical, practical and ethical problems that have arisen with traditional approaches to focus groups research can be overcome. It is anticipated that reflecting on such experiences and building upon the findings of these research projects will enable an understandings about the potential for innovative practices in education research that are possible with digital technologies.

Introduction The European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Rehabilitation (EUSSER) is made up of health professionals who specialise or have an interest in the field of shoulder & elbow dysfunction. The scientific committee of the EUSSER developed their strategies and vision and post-Brexit to work in collaboration with The European Society of Surgery for the Shoulder and Elbow (ESSSE), Société Europeenne de Chirurgeie I’Epaule et du Coude (SECEC), and British Elbow and Shoulder Society. Aim We aim to share EUSSER scientific committee’s achievements, our vision, Brexit, and its impact on our future collaborations for education and research. Materials and methods We developed our strategy in discussion with the EUSSER Board, evidence synthesis of published literature, monitoring and mapping the EUSSER scientific committee’s activities along with other equivalent professional networks scientific committee and with EUSSER scientific committee members consensus. Results Integration, collaboration, and transformation were three key areas of focus for the scientific committee this year. We worked together with other professional networks and societies, delivered a scientific lecture, and are working on developing collaborative research projects across Europe. Conclusion Despite Brexit and Covid-19 pandemic challenges, EUSSER scientific committee has worked towards expanding this year, developed strategies and vision to work with various stakeholders. Thanks to advancements in communication and online social media, there has been a surge of useful online educational resources across the Internet. In addition to supplementing educational materials, these resources could be used in varying education research and potentially advance the quality of education. Nevertheless, conducting such research projects requires using big data techniques and approaches to find meaningful resources and harnessing them in an effective way. In this chapter, we present a roadmap for how to incorporate online social media in education research projects. The roadmap consists of three major components: project initialization, data collection, and data utilization. Furthermore, we present some learned lessons, tips, and tricks, as well as case studies from the Teachers in Social Media project ( www.teachersinsocialmedia.com /). We believe this chapter can be used as a practical reference point for many researchers whose concern is connecting data to their education research endeavors.
