Thenumerical solution of ordinary differential equations (ODEs)with boundary conditions is studied here. Functions are approximated by polynomials in a Chebychev basis. Sections then cover spectral discretization, sampling, interpolation, differentiation, integration, and the basic ODE. Following Trefethen et al., differential operators are approximated as rectangular matrices. Boundary conditions add additional rows that turn them into square matrices. These can then be diagonalized using standard linear algebra methods. After studying various simple model problems, this method is applied to the Orr–Sommerfeld equation, deriving results originally due to Orszag. The difficulties of pushing spectral methods to higher dimensions are outlined.

AbstractWe consider a new class of inverse problems on the recovery of the coefficients of differential equations from a finite set of eigenvalues of a boundary value problem with unseparated boundary conditions. A finite number of eigenvalues is possible only for problems in which the roots of the characteristic equation are multiple. The article describes solutions to such a problem for equations of the second, third, and fourth orders on a graph with three, four, and five edges. The inverse problem with an arbitrary number of edges is solved similarly.

Abstract We study a nonlinear system of Riemann-Liouville fractional differential equations equipped with nonseparated semi-coupled integro-multipoint boundary conditions. We make use of the tools of the fixed-point theory to obtain the desired results, which are well-supported with numerical examples.

AbstractIn recent years, the study of fractional differential equations has become a hot spot. It is more difficult to solve fractional differential equations with nonlocal boundary conditions. In this article, we propose a multiscale orthonormal bases collocation method for linear fractional-order nonlocal boundary value problems. In algorithm construction, the solution is expanded by the multiscale orthonormal bases of a reproducing kernel space. The nonlocal boundary conditions are transformed into operator equations, which are involved in finding the collocation coefficients as constrain conditions. In theory, the convergent order and stability analysis of the proposed method are presented rigorously. Finally, numerical examples show the stability, accuracy and effectiveness of the method.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to study one class of nonlinear differential equations, which model the Antarctic circumpolar current. We prove the existence results for such equations related to the geophysical relevant boundary conditions. First, based on the weighted eigenvalues and the theory of topological degree, we study the semilinear case. Secondly, the existence results for the sublinear and superlinear cases are proved by fixed point theorems.

Abstract The basic problem of satisfaction of boundary conditions is considered when the generalized stress vector is given on the surfaces of elastic plates and shells. This problem has so far remained open for both refined theories in a wide sense and hierarchic type models. In the linear case, it was formulated by I. N. Vekua for hierarchic models. In the nonlinear case, bending and compression-expansion processes do not split and in this context the exact structure is presented for the system of differential equations of von Kármán–Mindlin–Reisner (KMR) type, constructed without using a variety of ad hoc assumptions since one of the two relations of this system in the classical form is the compatibility condition, but not the equilibrium equation. In this paper, a unity mathematical theory is elaborated in both linear and nonlinear cases for anisotropic inhomogeneous elastic thin-walled structures. The theory approximately satisfies the corresponding system of partial differential equations and the boundary conditions on the surfaces of such structures. The problem is investigated and solved for hierarchic models too. The obtained results broaden the sphere of applications of complex analysis methods. The classical theory of finding a general solution of partial differential equations of complex analysis, which in the linear case was thoroughly developed in the works of Goursat, Weyl, Walsh, Bergman, Kolosov, Muskhelishvili, Bers, Vekua and others, is extended to the solution of basic nonlinear differential equations containing the nonlinear summand, which is a composition of Laplace and Monge–Ampére operators.
