This work concerns with the solvability of third-order periodic fully problems with a weighted parameter, where the nonlinearity must verify only a local monotone condition and no periodic, coercivity or super or sublinearity restrictions are assumed, as usual in the literature. The arguments are based on a new type of lower and upper solutions method, not necessarily well ordered. A Nagumo growth condition and Leray–Schauder’s topological degree theory are the existence tools. Only the existence of solution is studied here and it will remain open the discussion on the non-existence and the multiplicity of solutions. Last section contains a nonlinear third-order differential model for periodic catatonic phenomena, depending on biological and/or chemical parameters.

We prove existence results for systems of boundary value problems involving elliptic second-order differential operators. The assumptions involve lower and upper solutions, which may be either well-ordered, or not at all. The results are stated in an abstract framework, and can be translated also for systems of parabolic type.

AbstractIn this manuscript, we study a certain classical second-order fully nonlinear coupled system with generalized nonlinear coupled boundary conditions satisfying the monotone assumptions. Our new results unify the existence criteria of certain linear and nonlinear boundary value problems (BVPs) that have been previously studied on a case-by-case basis; for example, Dirichlet and Neumann are special cases. The common feature is that the solution of each BVPs lies in a sector defined by well-ordered coupled lower and upper solutions. The tools we use are the coupled lower and upper solutions approach along with some results of fixed point theory. By means of the coupled lower and upper solutions approach, the considered BVPs are logically modified to new problems, known as modified BVPs. The solution of the modified BVPs leads to the solution of the original BVPs. In our case, we only require the Nagumo condition to get a priori bound on the derivatives of the solution function. Further, we extend the results presented in (Franco et al. in Extr. Math. 18(2):153–160, 2003; Franco et al. in Appl. Math. Comput. 153:793–802, 2004; Franco and O’Regan in Arch. Inequal. Appl. 1:423–430, 2003; Asif et al. in Bound. Value Probl. 2015:134, 2015). Finally, as an application, we consider the fully nonlinear coupled mass-spring model.

We study a mathematical model proposed in the literature with the aim of describing the interactions between tumor cells and the immune system, when a periodic treatment of immunotherapy is applied. Combining some techniques from non-linear analysis (degree theory, lower and upper solutions, and theory of free-homeomorphisms in the plane), we give a detailed global analysis of the model. We also observe that for certain therapies, the maximum level of aggressiveness of a cancer, for which the treatment works (or does not work), can be computed explicitly. We discuss some strategies for designing therapies. The mathematical analysis is completed with numerical results and conclusions.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to extend the theory of lower and upper solutions to the periodic problem associated with planar systems of differential equations. We generalize previously given definitions and we are able to treat both the well-ordered case and the non-well-ordered case. The proofs involve topological degree arguments, together with a detailed analysis of the solutions in the phase plane.

In this paper, we investigate the convergence of approximate solutions for a class of first-order integro-differential equations with antiperiodic boundary value conditions. By introducing the definitions of the coupled lower and upper solutions which are different from the former ones and establishing some new comparison principles, the results of the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the problem are given. Finally, we obtain the uniform and rapid convergence of the iterative sequences of approximate solutions via the coupled lower and upper solutions and quasilinearization method. In addition, an example is given to illustrate the feasibility of the method.
