Several alternative test specimens for the determination of the fracture strength of a brittle material have been studied. These include a ring-supported ball-loaded thin circular disc, a disc symmetrically supported on three equispaced balls and loaded at the centre through a fourth ball, a cylinder under axial compressive point-loading, and a ‘pure shear’ beam specimen. The stress distributions in these specimens have been determined photoelastically and the stress data used to interpret fracture test data for batches of each specimen made from reactor-grade graphite. The stochastic nature of the fracture data has also been considered.

The paper presents the analysis of the Brazilian compression tests considering the possibilities of determining the proper tensile strength. These analyses include the precise designation of the stress field without singularity at the point of application of force, the evaluation of critical stress in the light of classical and contemporary failure criteria for a brittle material, and determination of the position of the point where the destructive crack is expected to be initiated in the sample.

Current developments are devoted to the environmental safety of the foundry. There is a significant amount of pollutants, according to dust, which is released in the working area, during the manufacture of metal structures for high buildings. From the point of dust extraction, the most unfavorable areas are shot blasting, sand-blasting chambers and knockout grills. The weight fraction of dust composition with diameters up to 20 μm reaches 43,8% by mass, according to experimental analysis. This kind of dust is the most dangerous to employees and also it creates problems for dust-cleaning in the air.

The present study evaluate the stress field during the cracking caused by applying pressure loading to this ends of material. Our problem formulated by using the brittle material (concrete, ceramic, glass,...) having; elasticity modulus E and Poissons ratio (υ).The fundamental idea of this work rests on the determination of the influence of the dislocation presented near of the main crack on this cracking. This problem can be treated by finite element method while using Software (ABAQUS). One uses a square plate from element fissured at his end (semi-infinite) and a dislocation in the vicinity of the main crack, with various distances between the two cracks (main crack-dislocation), for each distance we have stresses can be found at the end of the main crack. After the determination of these latter, we deduced that the presence of dislocation influences largely on the propagation of cracking by amplification or reduction of this propagation.

The thermal stress of a multi-layer composite of plastic/brittle material was studied by the finite element method. High stress is found to be located on the interfaces between the plastic and the brittle material. 1-D and 2-D approaches for the determination of the temperature distributions in the multi-layer composite were examined. The 1-D approach gives an approximate 80 percent of error in temperature and a maximum of 20 percent of error in thermal stress in comparison with the 2-D approach. This suggests that, for a plastic/brittle composite, a 2-D approach for the determination of the temperature distribution should be taken in order to ensure the validity in the determination of both the temperature and stress distributions.
