AbstractMy paper presents the results of a research study on the relationship between existential/spiritual resources, that is, spiritual sensitivity (a disposition to experience spirituality, manifested in the embracement of the nature of things in the transcendent and final perspective, in moral sensitivity, and the ability to find meaning in paradoxical and limiting situations), spiritual sensitivity components and subjective quality of life (a generalized attitude to one’s own life mode, in the four existential dimensions: psychophysical, psycho-social, subjective, and metaphysical). Study subjects were older adults (60+, n = 522) living in the current, dynamic, uncertain and fluid modern world conditions. The study had two phases – quantitative and qualitative (narrative interviews). To measure the phenomena, the Spiritual Sensitivity Inventory (Straś-Romanowska, Kowal, & Kapała, 2013) and the Quality of Life Questionnaire (Straś-Romanowska, Oleszkowicz, & Frąckowiak, 2004) were used. The results obtained confirmed a strong mutual relationship between spiritual resources and quality of life, also providing an answer to some questions about the nature of spiritual sensitivity, and its integrating, pro-development and pro-health role in the elderly adults’ life in the post-modern era.

Background: Infectious disease remains a health problem for the elderly. The elderly are susceptible to infection, because the body's ability to fight infection decreases immunity. The immune status can be improved through the effortsof immunization, and nutrition. However the elderly are not sufficient to meet the nutritional needs of food, so probioticcould support nutritional adequacy. Objective: Analyze the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus helveticus Rosell-52 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell-11 onlevels of lymphocytes in the elderly in Tresna Elderly Social Institution Puspakarma Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara. Methods: This was quasi-experimental study, randomized pre-post control group design. The population is elderly aged60-75 years, involving 45 subjects were divided randomly into two groups, namely the treatment groups givenprobiotics and the control group was given a placebo. Probiotics were given for 4 weeks, with the provision of onecapsule a day. Immunity status in this study was lymphocytes. Data examined included the intake of nutrients (protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, Fe, Zn), health status, quality of sleep, and levels of lymphocytes in the elderly. Datawere analyzed using bivariate with different test Independent sample t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman, Pearson, and Paired t-test.Results: Increasing number of lymphocytes were significantly in the treatment group (χ ± SD: 1.84 ± 1.85) and in thecontrol group (0.95 ± 5.0). There is no relationship between intake (protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, Fe, Zink),physical health status, and quality of sleep with levels of lymphocytes. Conclusion: Probiotics in 4 weeks is proven to increase the number of lymphocytes in the elderly.

Abstract: An Elderly is someone who has reached the age of 60 years or more. The number of elderly in Indonesia in 2020 has reached 28.7 million. This number continues to increase every year. The elderly will naturally experience changes both physically and mentally which can reduce their quality of life. The quality of sleep and cognitive function in the elderly also changes due to aging factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of yoga exercises on sleep quality and cognitive function in the elderly. This research is a literature review. This study studied topics related to the effect of yoga exercises on sleep quality and cognitive function in the elderly from previous studies. The literature reviewed consists of 15 literature with 8 literature discussing the effect of yoga exercises on sleep quality in the elderly and 7 other literature discussed the effect of yoga exercise on cognitive function in the elderly. The results of this study indicate that yoga exercises that are carried out regularly both in the long and short term can improve the quality of sleep in the elderly and maintain cognitive function in the elderly. It can also prevent dementia and Alzheimer's disease in the elderly. Keywords: yoga exercise, sleep quality, cognitive function, elderly  Abstrak: Lansia merupakan seseorang yang sudah mencapai usia 60 tahun atau lebih. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronical community health problem, and mostly suffered by the elderly. The elderly with DM have several symptoms at night that caused a sleep disorder and it may be affected by the poor quality of sleep.  The poor quality of sleep has several negative impacts to elderly including sleepy in the daylight, a lack of attention, memory disorders, depression, easy to fall, and reduce of the quality of life. There is a need for a study that assesses the sleep quality of elderly with DM. This study used descriptive quantitative approach. The samples were chosen using total sampling technique. This study involved 47 elderly with DM in the primary health center (PHC) Garuda. The data were collected using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) Questionnaire that has been adapted for elders. The data were analyzed using distribution frequency. The results showed that the majority of elderly had a poor sleep quality (51%). All elders in this study had sleep disorders, and some of them had behavior that affected   their sleep quality, such as sleeping in a bright room (n=25), sleeping in low temperature room (n=27), and consuming caffeine (n=28). Nurses in the community setting are expected to provide health education to maintenance a good sleep quality, such as the importance of sleeping in the dark and warm temperature room, and avoiding to consume caffeine.

Insomnia is an important medical problem; its treatment requires both nonpharmacological methods (education and psychotherapy) and the use of hypnotic agents. The benzodiazepine derivatives may be used as hypnotic agents but their use is substantially limited. The alternative treatment includes so-called z-drugs, which means nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agents. Their mechanism of pharmacological action is a GABA-receptor agonism. In general, these drugs improve the quality of sleep (sleep latency, wake after sleep onset, number and duration of awakenings, total sleep time). Contrary to the benzodiazepines they do not possess anti-anxiety, myorelaxant, and anti-seizure properties, and are better tolerated. Eszopiclone for the treatment of insomnia was not available in Poland. It is not only effective in the treatment of insomnia in comparison to placebo but is also well tolerated. It may be used for a longer time than the benzodiazepines – not only a couple of weeks but per several months. Eszopiclone shortens the sleep latency, decreases the number of wakes after sleep onset and increases total sleep time. It improves the subjective evaluation of sleep by the patients, the quality of sleep and functioning during the day. Its efficacy in the treatment of insomnia in the elderly has also been proved. It is quite well-tolerated and the most frequent side-effect of eszopiclone in the unpleasant taste.

The practice of physical activities contributes to reducing the risk of chronic diseases and improves sleep patterns in the elderly. This research aimed to investigate the association between insomnia symptoms and daytime nap and the participation in physical leisure activities in elderly community residents. Data from the Studies Network of the Fragility in Brazilian Elderly (Campinas site), were used. Information from 689 elderly was analyzed, regarding sociodemographic characterization, physical leisure activity, occurrence of daytime napping and its duration, symptoms of insomnia and use of sleep medication. A significant association was found between the practice of walking and the daytime nap of short duration. Studies indicate that a short nap can benefit the quality of sleep and health of the elderly. Therefore, promoting the practice of walking can be a nursing intervention that favors the sleep patterns of the elderly.
