Based on the review of the available stratigraphic, tectonic, morphological, geodetic, and seismological data, along with new structural observations, we present a reappraisal of the potential seismogenic faults and fault systems in the inner northwest Apennines, Italy, which was the site, one century ago, of the devastating Mw ~6.5, 1920 Fivizzano earthquake. Our updated fault catalog provides the fault locations, as well as the description of their architecture, large-scale segmentation, cumulative displacements, evidence for recent to present activity, and long-term slip rates. Our work documents that a dense network of active faults, and thus potential earthquake fault sources, exists in the region. We discuss the seismogenic potential of these faults, and propose a general tectonic scenario that might account for their development.

<p>As part of an ongoing project of mapping, structural studies and fault characterization we present an updated tectonic scheme and data set for the active fault systems that shaped the inner portion of the Apennines north of the Arno river. Geomorphology, stratigraphy of Plio-Quaternary sediments, GPS data, historical and instrumental seismicity have been reviewed and combined with structural studies to define the neotectonic history of the investigated region. Within the studied area, first-order physiographic and structural features allow to define different structural domains related to a set of ranges with a dominant NW-SE direction separated by intramontane or continental/marine morphotectonic depressions of the Lunigiana, Garfagnana, Lucca-Mt.Albano, La Spezia-Carrara and the off-shore Viareggio basin. The main boundary faults and internal fault segments of the different structural domains were described while the Plio-Quaternary sedimentary records has been used to constrain their long to short term deformation and rates, with the aim to improve current Italian catalogues - DISS (INGV) and Ithaca (ISPRA) - with some utilities for the seismic microzonation local projects. Moreover, our work aims to draw the attention of the scientific community to the seismotectonics of a region in which the seismic hazard is largely considered medium to low despite the occurrence, one century ago, of one of the most destructive earthquakes that have struck the Italian peninsula, the 1920 Fivizzano EQ, with an estimated Mw 6.5 similar to the main shock of the 2016 Central Italy seismic sequence.</p><p> </p>

The aim of this study is to evaluate the relative tectonic activity in the north part of the Evia Island, located in Central Greece, and to investigate the contribution of neotectonic processes in the development of the fluvial landscape. Five morphometric parameters, including Drainage Basin Slope (Sb), Hypsometric Integral (Hi), Asymmetry Factor (Af), Relief Ratio (Rh), and Melton’s Ruggedness Number (M), were estimated for a total of 189 drainage basins. The catchments were classified into two groups, according to the estimated values of each morphometric parameter, and maps showing their spatial distribution were produced. The combination of the calculated morphometric parameters led to a new single integrated Index of relative tectonic activity (named Irta). Following this indexing, the basins were characterized as of low, moderate, or high relative tectonic activity. The quantitative analysis showed that the development of the present drainage systems and the geometry of the basins of the study area have been influenced by the tectonic uplift caused by the activity of two NW-SE trending offshore active normal fault systems: the north Gulf of Evia fault zone (Kandili-Telethrion) and the Aegean Sea fault zone (Dirfis), respectively. The spatial distribution of the values of the new integrated index Irta showed significant differences among the drainage basins that reflect differences in relative tectonic activity related to their location with regard to the normal fault systems of the study area.

A uranium mill tailings, located in Guangdong, was selected for spatial distribution of the radon exhalation rates measured by local static method. The two-dimension surface of radon exhalation rates was established by Surfer using the data of spatial distribution of radon exhalation rates measured at August 14, 2007 to 19 and 21, which was analyzed by fractal method of projective covering. The results show that the two-dimension surface of radon exhalation rates is of fractal structure. The fractal dimension of surface of radon exhalation rates from August 14, 2007 to 19 and 21 are 2.0535, 2.0173, 2.0029, 2.0084, 2.0079, 2.0057 and 2.0034, respectively, which indicates that the complexity of spatial distribution of the radon exhalation rates at 14 and 15 are larger than that of the other days. The phenomenon results from the change of precipitation and temperature, as well as the features of uranium mill tailings, including mineral composition, particle size, radium content, porosity and pore connectivity, etc.

Στόχος της διατριβής είναι η μελέτη και ανάδειξη των δυναμικών και στοχαστικών χαρακτηριστικών δύο πληθυσμών σεισμογόνων ρηγμάτων του Ελλαδικού χώρου, η διερεύνηση της αλληλεξάρτησης και ποσοτικοποίηση του βαθμού αλληλεπίδρασης μεταξύ των ρηγμάτων όπως αποτυπώνεται στη σεισμική διαδικασία. Οι δύο περιοχές μελέτης είναι η Μυγδονία λεκάνη και η λεκάνη του Κορινθιακού κόλπου. Η διατριβή αποτελείται από τρία επιμέρους ερευνητικά αντικείμενα τα οποία συμβάλλουν στην ολοκληρωμένη προσέγγιση του στόχου. Η κατανομή των σεισμικών εστιών αποκαλύπτει πληροφορίες για την ανάπτυξη και τη γεωμετρία του σεισμοτεκτονικού ιστού. Για το λόγο αυτό πραγματοποιείται ο επαναπροσδιορισμός των παράμετρων της εστίας για τους πιο πρόσφατους σεισμούς. Συλλέγονται δεδομένα σεισμικότητας (αφίξεις ζευγών εγκαρσίων και επιμήκων σεισμικών κυμάτων) και χρησιμοποιούνται για την εφαρμογή της μεθοδολογίας Wadati, τον υπολογισμό χρονικών διορθώσεων των σεισμολογικών σταθμών και μαζί με τα μοντέλο ταχυτήτων, εισάγονται στο πρόγραμμα Hypoinverse και HypoDD. Η χρονική και χωρική κατανομή της σεισμικότητας δείχνει σημαντική μετανάστευση σεισμών μεταξύ των ρηγμάτων. Η μικροσεισμικότητα δημιουργεί ομάδες οι οποίες συσχετίζονται μεταξύ τους και η αλληλεπίδραση αυτή υπερισχύει μεταξύ των κύριων δομών. Η διερεύνηση του σεισμογόνου όγκου και της γεωμετρίας των ρηγμάτων πραγματοποιείται με την υλοποίηση κατακόρυφων τομών σε διεύθυνση κάθετη στην επικρατούσα διεύθυνση των κύριων ρηγμάτων. Επόμενο στόχο της εργασίας αποτελεί η ποσοτικοποίηση της αλληλεπίδρασης μεταξύ των σεισμών, δηλαδή η ιδιότητα της σεισμικής διαδικασίας να διατηρεί τα χαρακτηριστικά. Απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση είναι η ανεύρεση του μεγέθους πληρότητας και η αποκλασματοποίηση των σεισμικών καταλόγων. Δημιουργούνται χρονοσειρές και εξετάζονται η ύπαρξη συσταδοποίησης, μακράς και βραχείας μνήμης-εμμονής της πρόσφατης και ισχυρής σεισμικότητας. Η παρουσία μακροπρόθεσμης και βραχυπρόθεσμης μνήμης μελετάται με τη βοήθεια του συντελεστή Hurst και του συντελεστή αυτοσυσχέτισης ACF μαζί με τη πιθανή συσχέτιση του Hurst με τη χωρική και χρονική μεταβολή της σεισμικότητας. Η δυναμική παρουσία της μνήμης αποδυκνείεται έντονα, ειδικά για τους ενδιαμέσους χρόνους με τον Κορινθιακό κόλπο να υπερτερεί σημαντικά. Τελικό στόχο της διατριβής αποτελεί η διερεύνηση της αλληλεπίδρασης μεταξύ των σημαντικότερων ρηγμάτων σύμφωνα με την εξέλιξη του πεδίου των τάσεων λόγω της σεισμικής ολίσθησης και τεκτονικής φόρτισης. Για το σκοπό αυτό λαμβάνονται υπόψιν οι ισχυροί σεισμοί από το 1700 μέχρι σήμερα. Προσδιορίζονται τα μοντέλα διάρρηξης και υπολογίζονται οι μεταβολές της τάσης Coulomb oι οποίες προκαλούνται κατά τη γένεση κάθε ισχυρού σεισμού. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν την τεκτονική φόρτιση από την διαρκή κίνηση των μικροπλακών στην περιοχή του Αιγαίου, ανακατασκευάζεται το διαδοχικό πεδίο των τάσεων πριν και μετά από κάθε σεισμό μέχρι τη σημερινή κατάσταση. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν ότι ο βαθμός επικέντρωσης της παραμόρφωσης εκδηλώνεται μέσω της σεισμικής συμπεριφοράς. Η ισχυρή επικέντρωση της παραμόρφωσης στον Κορινθιακό κόλπο όπως αποδυκνύεται από ανάλογες μελέτες είναι υπεύθυνη για την ισχυρή παρουσία συσταδοποίησης και μακροπρόθεσμης μνήμης για τους ενδιάμεσους χρόνους και αποστάσεις μεταξύ των σεισμών, οι οποίοι προκαλούνται πάνω σε κυρίαρχες τεκτονικές δομές. Αντίθετα, στην Μυγδονία συγκριτικά με τον Κορινθιακό, πραγματοποιείται μια περισσότερο κατανεμημένη παραμόρφωση στο πληθυσμό ρηγμάτων, όπου μικρά δευτερεύοντα ρήγματα συμμετέχουν ενεργά στην εξέλιξη της σεισμικότητας η οποία εκδηλώνει μια σεισμική συμπεριφορά με πιο ασθενή την διατήρηση μνήμης και την χωροχρονική συσταδοποίηση συγκριτικά με τον Κορινθιακό κόλπο.
