Abstract Transonic buffet behaviour of the supercritical airfoil OAT15A was investigated experimentally at flow conditions $$Ma=0.7$$ M a = 0.7 and $$\alpha =3.5^\circ $$ α = 3 . 5 ∘ , using schlieren and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The general behaviour of the buffet cycle was characterised with short-exposure schlieren visualisation and phase-averaged PIV measurements. A spectral analysis showed that the shock oscillation occurs with a dominant contribution at 160 Hz (St = 0.07, in good agreement with the literature) and between 25 and 55 % of the chord of the airfoil. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) was applied to the PIV data to extract the main modes connected with buffet. It is found that the first three most energetic modes capture around 65 % of the total fluctuating kinetic energy. The first and the third modes have a main frequency peak at 160 Hz and are well representing the separated area and the shock oscillation. The second mode was, instead, associated with an asymmetrical behaviour of the separated area and of the shear layer and displays a main peak at 320 Hz, being double the main buffet cycle frequency. Finally, it was shown that by using the 11 most energetic POD modes, an accurate reduced-order model (ROM) is obtained, which when subtracted from the instantaneous velocity fields allows the visualisation of the small-scale structures present in the flow, such as the upstream travelling waves (UTWs) and the vortex shedding in the separated area near the trailing edge. The analysis allowed to estimate the velocity of the UTWs, obtaining values in good agreement with the literature. In contrast, the analysis of the vortex dynamics in the trailing edge area revealed that vortices shed at the shock foot, which convect downstream in an area detached from the airfoil surface, cannot be considered responsible for the creation of UTWs in view of the mismatch in frequency of the two phenomena. Transonic flow over a supercritical airfoil leads to the appearances of unsteady shock waves in theflow field. At certain flow conditions, the interaction of unsteady shock waves with boundary layer becomescomplex and generates self-excited shock oscillation, lift fluctuation and thus initiate the buffet. In the presentstudy, Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with k-? SST turbulence model has been applied to predictthe shock induced buffet onset for the flow over a supercritical airfoil NASA SC(2) 0714. The free streamtransonic Mach number is kept in the range of 0.71 to 0.75 while the angle of attack is varied in a wide range.The onset of buffet is confirmed by the fluctuating aerodynamic properties such as lift-coefficient, pressurecoefficient, static pressure and so on. The aim of the present research is to characterize both experimentally and numerically journal bearings with low radial clearances for rotors in small-scale applications (e.g., microgas turbines); their diameter is in the order of ten millimetres, leading to very small dimensional clearances when the typical relative ones (order of 1/1000) are employed; investigating this particular class of journal bearings under static and dynamic loading conditions represents something unexplored. To this goal, a suitable test rig was designed and the performance of its bearings was investigated under steady load. For the sake of comparison, numerical simulations of the lubrication were also performed by means of a simplified model. The original test rig adopted is a commercial rotor kit (RK), but substantial modifications were carried out in order to allow significant measurements. Indeed, the relative radial clearance of RK4 RK bearings is about 2/100, while it is around 1/1000 in industrial bearings. Therefore, the same original RK bearings are employed in this new test rig, but a new shaft was designed to reduce their original clearance. The new custom shaft allows to study bearing behaviour for different clearances, since it is equipped with interchangeable journals. Experimental data obtained by this test rig are then compared with further results of more sophisticated simulations. They were carried out by means of an in-house developed finite element (FEM) code, suitable for thermoelasto-hydrodynamic (TEHD) analysis of journal bearings both in static and dynamic conditions. In this paper, bearing static performances are studied to assess the reliability of the experimental journal location predictions by comparing them with the ones coming from already validated numerical codes. Such comparisons are presented both for large and small clearance bearings of original and modified RKs, respectively. Good agreement is found only for the modified RK equipped with small clearance bearings (relative radial clearance 8/1000), as expected. In comparison with two-dimensional lubrication analysis, three-dimensional simulation improves prediction of journal location and correlation with experimental results.

This paper first describes an apparatus for measuring the Nusselt number N versus the Rayleigh number R of convecting normal liquid 4He layers. The most important feature of the apparatus is its ability to provide layers of different heights d, and hence different aspect ratios [Gcy ]. The horizontal cross-section of each layer is circular, and [Gcy ] is defined by [Gcy ] = D/2d where D is the diameter of the layer. We report results for 2.4 [les ] [Gcy ] [les ] 16 and for Prandtl numbers Pr spanning 0.5 [lsim ] Pr [lsim ] 0.9 These results are presented in terms of the slope N1 = RcdN/dR evaluated just above the onset of convection at Rc. We find that N1 is only a slowly increasing function of [Gcy ] in the range 6 [lsim ] [Gcy ] [lsim ] 16, and that it has a value there which is quite close to 0.72. This value of N1 is in good agreement with variational calcuations by Ahlers et al. (1981) pertinent to parallel convection rolls in cylindrical geometry. Particularly for [Gcy ] [lsim ] 6, we find additional small-scale structure in N1 associated with changes in the number of convection rolls with changing [Gcy ]. An additional test of the linearzied hydrodynamics is given by measurements of Rc. We find good agreement between theory and our data for Rc.

The basic model problem of separation as predicted by the time-mean boundary-layer equations is studied, with the Cebeci-Smith model for turbulent stresses. The changes between laminar and turbulent flow are investigated by means of a turbulence ‘factor’ which increases from zero for laminar flow to unity for the fully turbulent regime. With an attached-flow starting point, a small increase in the turbulence factor above zero is found to drive the separation singularity towards the trailing edge or rear stagnation point for flow past a circular cylinder, according to both computations and analysis. A separated-flow starting point is found to produce analogous behaviour for the separation point. These findings lead to the suggestion that large-scale separation need not occur at all in the fully turbulent regime at sufficiently high Reynolds number; instead, separation is of small scale, confined near the trailing edge. Comments on the generality of this suggestion are presented, along with some supporting evidence from other computations. Further, the small scale involved theoretically has values which seem reasonable in practical terms.

A large-eddy simulation of laminar transonic buffet on an airfoil at a Mach number $M=0.735$, an angle of attack $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=4^{\circ }$, a Reynolds number $Re_{c}=3\times 10^{6}$ has been carried out. The boundary layer is laminar up to the shock foot and laminar/turbulent transition occurs in the separation bubble at the shock foot. Contrary to the turbulent case for which wall pressure spectra are characterised by well-marked peaks at low frequencies ($St=f\cdot c/U_{\infty }\simeq 0.06{-}0.07$, where $St$ is the Strouhal number, $f$ the shock oscillation frequency, $c$ the chord length and $U_{\infty }$ the free-stream velocity), in the laminar case, there are also well-marked peaks but at a much higher frequency ($St=1.2$). The shock oscillation amplitude is also lower: 6 % of chord and limited to the shock foot area in the laminar case instead of 20 % with a whole shock oscillation and intermittent boundary layer separation and reattachment in the turbulent case. The analysis of the phase-averaged fields allowed linking of the frequency of the laminar transonic buffet to a separation bubble breathing phenomenon associated with a vortex shedding mechanism. These vortices are convected at $U_{c}/U_{\infty }\simeq 0.4$ (where $U_{c}$ is the convection velocity). The main finding of the present paper is that the higher frequency of the shock oscillation in the laminar regime is due to a different mechanism than in the turbulent one: laminar transonic buffet is due to a separation bubble breathing phenomenon occurring at the shock foot.
