Summary Background Evidence-based art is the investigation of art effects and art investigated for effects. In this study the evidence regarding patient preferences for art styles and effects of art in nonpsychiatric hospitals and outpatient departments was reviewed. Methods Results from original articles were retrieved by a scoping PubMed search and by browsing the internet using the terms “evidence based art”, “evidence based design”, “art and hospital” and “design and hospital”, “art effect”, “design effect”, “landscape preference” and “abstract art figurative art”. The quality of art was not operationalized as a criterion. Results Of the articles 7 original sources showed patient preference for natural scenes and figurative art, 2 studies showed no preference, 16 studies showed positive art effects on well-being and behavior and 5 studies showed a positive effect of nature pictures on measurable findings. Conclusion Controversial results together with theoretical aspects suggest natural scenes in patient rooms and diverse art in public areas.

This chapter highlights and endorses a focus on continued progress in the area of integrative cancer care that assists the needs of the patients and also includes attention to the well-being of clinicians in cancer survivor care. Introducing a simple, relational structure that allows for both patients and clinicians to create a healing connection is one workable solution to the issues of quality survivorship care that can provide meaning and satisfaction to all concerned. The chapter provides evidence-based material on the vital importance of providing clinicians with meaningful support in their professional lives. It addresses their work–life balance and the importance of restoring their sense of personal meaning and quality of life to prevent burnout.

Introduction: Self-care has not been traditionally taught in medical education, but the epidemic of burnout among health professionals necessitates a change in culture, and consequently a change in curriculum. Burnout begins early in training and negatively impacts health professionals, patients, and institutions. Interventions that prevent and avert burnout are necessary at all stages of a doctor’s career to assure well-being over a lifetime. Evidence-based strategies supporting both personal and system wellness have begun to emerge, but more research is needed. Methods: We present a collaborative and comprehensive wellness program: “A Culture of Wellness.” We offered this pilot jointly for first-year medical students and faculty volunteers at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. We gave participants the following: (1) time—60 minutes per week for 8 weeks; (2) tools—weekly cases highlighting evidence-based wellness strategies; and (3) permission—opportunities to discuss and apply the strategies personally and within their community. Results: Pre- and postsurvey results show that dedicated time combined with student-faculty collaboration and application of strategies was associated with significantly lower levels of burnout and perceived stress and higher levels of mindfulness and quality of life in participants. Components of the curriculum were reported by all to add value to personal well-being. Conclusions: This pilot presents a feasible and promising model that can be reproduced at other medical schools and disseminated to enhance personal health and promote a culture of well-being among medical students and faculty.

159 Background: As part of the Affordable Care Act of 2010, the U.S. government has established a “National Strategy for Quality Improvement in Health Care,” with the goal of implementing evidence-based research into practice. The quantity of oncology research devoted to quality improvement is uncertain. We use the percentage of quality improvement articles in the oncology literature as a proxy metric to gauge the importance given to quality improvement in oncology. Methods: A MEDLINE literature search was performed on July 14, 2012. We approximated the number of articles published in the field of oncology using a PubMed search with the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) term “neoplasm” or keywords “neoplasm,” “cancer,” or “oncology.” Results were limited to English language and publication dates between July 2010 and June 2012. From this data, the number of articles concerning quality improvement was approximated using the MeSH term “quality improvement” or keywords “quality improvement.” Results: Of approximately 246,000 English language, oncology-related articles published in the last two years, 314 focused on “quality improvement.” The topic of quality improvement comprised only 0.1% of the oncology literature over this period. Conclusions: Using bibliometric analysis, it appears that research on quality improvement in oncology is infrequent. Quality improvement research has been found effective in other fields and requires increased emphasis by the oncology research community. To improve the quality of care in oncology, evidence-based research in the field of quality improvement should increase.

BACKGROUND Our modern way of life, health and well-being depend on the individual's health behaviors. Motivation is a major factor of health behaviour change, and intrinsically motivated behavior change is desirable as it is both sustained and directly contributes to well-being. This raises the immediate question about what kind of interventions are best positioned to intrinsically motivate health behavior change. OBJECTIVE With this study we wanted to analyse the presence and efficiency of gamification mechanisms in oral healthcare-themed digital games and apps on promoting user engagement to comply with prevention policies. METHODS The search query was based on the electronic database PubMed. Applying exclusion and inclusion criteria, this study is focused on scholar work reporting original research of the value of gamification on oral healthcare. The final pool of data was scrutinized for the gamification features, evidence-based oral health and behavior change techniques. RESULTS Apps with high quality evidence-based educational content for oral self-care, employing gamification features and behavior change techniques, provide excellent results in functionality, effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. However, some authors highlighted issues such as the need to improve engagement, aesthetics, evidence-based information content, behavior change taxonomies, psychological needs, evaluation, validation, quality assessment and professional regulation of the oral healthcare apps. CONCLUSIONS In this systematic review, we did not find any app that included all the segments for learning, performing, and maintaining proper oral health care. Evidence-based oral healthcare gamification features represent potential new approaches for health care providers to change behavior in the form of learning, performing and maintaining proper oral hygiene. Evaluation, validation, quality assurance, best practice standards and guidelines are needed for improving app use.

Evidence-based practices (EBPs) are strategies shown through rigorous experimentation to be effective when implemented as designed by educators in the field. The purpose of this review is to (a) describe the state and quality of evidence-based reviews and meta-analyses of studies on classroom and behavior management interventions for students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBDs) and (b) summarize practices which can be deemed evidence-based. We identified 50 meta-analytic or systematic reviews, encompassing 20 interventions implemented solely or in part with students with EBD. In total, our review identified eight interventions classified as EBPs for supporting students labeled with EBD in the meta-analytic literature. Implications for future research are presented.

Resumen: Introducción. El uso de la gamificación en salud es una herramienta útil para incrementar la motivación cuan­do se aplica a salud. Los objetivos fueron realizar una revisión sobre evidencias científicas de aplicaciones con elementos de gamificación en salud, identificar características de calidad, elaborar un check-list y aplicarlo a apli­caciones para la deshabituación tabáquica con elementos de gamificación. Métodos. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en Pubmed sobre gamificación en salud y una búsqueda de apps de cese tabáquico con elementos de gamificación. Se elaboró un check-list para evaluar la calidad, elementos de gamificación y técnicas de cambio de comportamiento utilizados, posteriormente se aplicó a las apps seleccionadas. Resultados. Se incluyeron 14 apps sobre gamificación en deshabituación tabáquica. Solo 4 (28,6%) identificaron fuentes de información fiables y solo 2 (14,3%) informaron sobre políticas de acceso y tratamiento de datos. Las técnicas de cambio de comportamiento identificadas fueron retroalimentación en todas las apps, automonitorización en 12 (85,7%) y cambios basados en los éxitos pasados en 13 (92,9%). Conclusiones. Existen pocos estudios sobre aplica­ciones para la deshabituación tabáquica con elementos de gamificación, con gran variabilidad en metodología, variables medidas y escasas evidencias. La creación de un check-list sobre calidad de las aplicaciones podría disminuir esta variabilidad y mejorar la calidad de los estudios futuros. The use of health gamification has proven to be a useful tool to increase motivation and com­mitment when applied to health. The objectives were to review the scientific evidences of health gamification applications, to identify the quality characteristics, to develop a check list to evaluate it and to apply it to the appli­cations in smoking cessation. Methodology. PubMed search on health gamification and a search for smoking cessation apps with gamification elements in the most important application stores. A checklist was developed to evaluate the quality, gamification elements and behavior change techniques used, and was applied to the selected apps. Results. We included 14 apps on gamification in smoking cessation. Only 4 (28.6%) identified reliable sou­rces of information and only 2 (14.3%) reported on access policies and data processing. Behavior change techni­ques identified were feedback in all apps, self-monitoring in 12 (85.7%) and changes based on past successes 13 (92.9%). Conclusions. There are few studies on gamification applications in smoking cessation, with a high variabi­lity in the methodology, measured variables and with little evidence. Creating a checklist on the quality of smoking cessation apps could decrease this variability and improve the quality of future studies. Palliative wound and ostomy care is a nascent area of palliative care, with little research and few evidence-based guidelines to guide practice. Many patients at the end of life will suffer from a wound or ostomy malady, requiring an interprofessional approach led by specialist-level, palliative care clinicians in consultation with a wound, ostomy, and continence nurse. Palliative wound and ostomy care emphasizes an interprofessional, patient-centred approach to alleviate suffering and promote well-being and quality of life through expert symptom management and preservation or restoration of functional performance. A combination of evidence-based wound and ostomy interventions and advanced symptom management science is the hallmark of this specialty.
