Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate Japanese consumer perceptions of the benefits of consuming fresh leafy vegetables. Design/methodology/approach An online bulletin board survey was conducted in Japan to collect responses to an open-ended question about reasons for consuming fresh leafy vegetables. A total of 897 responses were analysed using word co-occurrence network analysis. A community detection method and centrality measures were used to interpret the resulting network map. Findings Using a community detection algorithm, the authors identify six major groups of words that represent respondents’ core motives for consuming leafy vegetables. While Japanese consumers view health benefits to be most important, sensory factors, such as texture, colour, and palatability, and convenience factors also influence attitudes. The authors find that centrality measures can be useful in identifying keywords that appear in various contexts of consumer responses. Originality/value This is the first paper to use a quantitative text analysis to examine consumer perceptions for fresh leafy vegetables. The analysis also provides pointers for creating visually interpretable co-occurrence network maps from textual data and discusses the role of community structure and centrality in interpreting such maps.

Information dissemination is a key concern for most tertiary institutions. While information is relevant for the day-to-day running of a tertiary institution, the rightful information, sometimes, is not available for the appropriate decisions to be taken.  The practice, in some institutions, is the use of wooden notice boards for making information available to the academic community.   In many cases, such means of information broadcasting has been found to be inefficient, and largely a component of physical presence.  However, electronic presence is becoming more and more acceptable for spreading information. To this effect, this paper will discuss the design and implementation of a simplified online bulletin board system called SIMPBOARD that can be accessed through the web browser of a computer or smart phone. Furthermore, the system will allow for anywhere access to bulletins, and possible archiving of same, for reference purposes, through the use of Mongo DB with Meteor JS Framework.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v36i3.32

INTRODUCTION:Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a very rare, benign proliferative tumor affecting the inner lining of synovial joints and tendon sheets. Information on treatment needs of PVNS patients to inform drug development is currently scarce, hence we conducted qualitative research with patients using an online bulletin board (OBB) methodology to generate insights on objective and emotional aspects related to the medical journey and living with this disease.METHODS:OBB is an asynchronous, online qualitative market research tool that allows participants to comprehensively answer pre-defined questions in a comprehensive manner. Patients were recruited via physician referral and underwent screening questions to ensure eligibility for the study and willingness to participate. The discussion was moderated, structured, and allowed open answers and in response to other participants posts. Analysis was conducted using a combination of different qualitative analytical tools.RESULTS:The patient OBB ran for 4 days with eleven participants (n = 3 Canada, n = 4 United Kingdom, n = 4 United States of America) aged 28–57 years, suffering from PVNS for 2–27 years. The key patient insights were: (i) pain is the primary factor, constituting a significant emotional and psychological burden; (ii) surgery (arthroscopy) does not get rid of PVNS, relapse rate was high in these patients; and (iii) PVNS has a big financial impact on patients, their families, and the healthcare system, due in particular to time off work/lost wages (patient & caretaker), for healthcare system it is repeat costs for surgeries/hospital stays plus other medical expenses. We also identified orthopedic specialists/surgeons are the physicians who predominantly manage PVNS at this point, as surgery is the only option.CONCLUSIONS:This study shows the suitability of the OBB for uncovering qualitative patient insights to inform decision making and strategy in early pharmaceutical drug development. OBB lends itself very well to uncovering patient insights which might not be revealed in focus group or telephone interviews, particularly in a rare disease like this. PVNS patients are in need of a medical drug treatment which can reduce pain, relapses and provide an alternative to surgery, the current standard of care.

This chapter introduces Online Bulletin Board Dialogues (OBBDs). It focuses on how to making dialogues work. Besides, in this study, the strategies and principles of conversation design based on Media Richness Theory is discussed to generate a theoretical framework that conversation design. This framework shows that the new ways of adjusting democratic conversations to contemporaneous realities. OBBDs are influenced of several things, such as political pressures, personal aspirations, etc., the desire to exercise power, the overriding issues of global need and ambition. On the other hand, OBBDs build on shifting sands or unfirm earth of feelings and interests. The author hopes that making OBBDs work can help online communication workers find the diverse resources, multicultural experiences, and egalitarian opportunities that open their minds and broaden their perspectives. Furthermore, discussing the main characteristics of bulletin boards for building knowledge networks can construct very powerful paradigm shifts to build online communities with new communication technologies.

This paper explores the linguistic and interactional properties of computer-mediated communication in Taiwan. We collected data from messages posted asynchronously on Internet websites. The three primary sources of messages were, in volume order, online Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs), chatrooms, and MSN messenger. We identify innovative uses of English and Mandarin Chinese hybrids, examine their function, and examine the online interlocutors’ ideologies when using them. Because of computer hardware and software, English plays an essential role even in a Mandarin-dominant online discourse by offering English expressions, words, pronunciations, and Roman letters to give loanwords, euphemisms, abbreviations, sentence-final particles, and emoticons in unique ways. The resultant hybrid language forms are easier to type, playful, funny, friendly, and trendy. The writer’s personality and cultural mentality are disclosed in such communication. Many speakers are alarmed about the effects of this language practice — the online interaction between English and Mandarin Chinese — on the development of Chinese in Taiwan.
