Experimental study of the dependence of embryonic development of Trachurus trachurus eggs on temperature. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 65: 17–24. To determine the effect of temperature on the development rates of artificially fertilized eggs of Trachurus trachurus, experiments were carried out at temperatures ranging from 10.5°C to 19°C. Egg development through to hatching only took place at 11.7–19°C. At lower temperature, eggs did not develop beyond the stage where the outline of the embryo was clearly discernible and a defined median line of the embryonic shield (stage 4 in this study) was apparent. Development time took from 46 h at 19°C to 126 h at 12°C. A generalized linear model of the stage-dependent development time (age) as a function of incubation temperature was developed. The data are also compared with those reported in the literature and related to sea temperature on the spawning grounds.

AbstractAmphibian populations are especially sensitive to aquatic parameters, in particular during embryonic and larval life. Our aim was to test for an effect of temperature (T = 13°C, 20°C and 25°C at constant pH = 7) and pH (pH = 5.5, 7 and 8.5 at constant T= 20°C) on embryos of two species of Triturus, T. carnifex carnifex and T. italicus (Amphibia, Salamandridae) using GLM procedure. Trend of embryogenesis processes, time to hatching and rate of development have a similar effect in both species in the used range of temperature and pH. Time to hatching decreased significantly with the increasing temperature. The pH experimental conditions had no effect on T. carnifex embryos survival, while the acidic pH condition raised the mortality rate in T. italicus, whose embryos should be more vulnerable than those of T. carnifex to acidification in nature.

SummaryThe present study aimed to provide data on the time required for Melanotaenia boesemani to complete embryonic development, and to investigate the influence that incubation at different temperatures caused in this species. The effects of temperature on the time and hatching rate are presented, as well as information related to embryonic development stages. After fertilization, the eggs were kept in incubators at 23, 26, 29 or 32°C and observed at predetermined times until the moment of hatching. Stages of development were identified and classified according to morphological and physiological characteristics. Oil droplets were visualized inside the eggs as well as filament adhesion present at the chorion. Embryonic development was similar to that observed in other species of the genus Melanotaenia with hatching and faster development in higher temperatures.
