A thin-frame nano-network film of titania with backbone diameter of 20–30 nm was obtained from precursor templating of nano-porous polymer with nano-channels 50 nm in width. The nano-porous polymer templates were prepared by selective removal of the polyisoprene (PI) domain with ozone from the bicontinuous structure formed through blending a symmetric polystyrene-block-polyisoprene (PS-b-PI) copolymer with a PS homopolymer (h-PS). The titania network possessed the preferred anatase crystallinity for photocatalytic applications and a specific surface area of 53 m2/g, comparable to that of Degussa P25, a widely used commercial photocatalyst. Photocatalytic performance of the fractured titania network film was also comparable to that of Degussa P25 in both gas-phase NO oxidation and liquid phase methylene blue degradation. The much larger overall structure size of the fractured titania network film, however, offers advantages over the nano-particulate form of P25, namely, easy handling and rapid recycling from treated streams.

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is emerging as an affordable route for abating its ever increasing concentration. For commercial scale applications, many constraints are still required to be addressed. A variety of research areas are explored, such as development of photocatalysts and photoreactors, reaction parameters and conditions, to resolve these bottlenecks. In general, the photocatalyst performance is mostly adjudged in terms of its ability to only produce hydrocarbon products, and other vital parameters such as light source, reaction parameters, and type of photoreactors used are not normally given appropriate attention. This makes a comprehensive comparison of photocatalytic performance quite unrealistic. Hence, probing the photocatalytic performance in terms of apparent quantum yield (AQY) with the consideration of certain process and experimental parameters is a more reasonable and prudent approach. The present brief review portrays the importance and impact of aforementioned parameters in the field of gas phase photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

The high UDMH conversion obtained in this study can be attributed to a synergetic effect between chemisorption and photocatalysis on TiO2–rGA under UV light.

The size of TiO2 (either nanometric or micrometric) can significantly affect both its photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties, thus altering the photooxidation of organic pollutants in air or water. The purpose of this work is to give an account of the photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic features of some nano- and micro-sized TiO2 commercial powders towards a model reaction, the photooxidation of acetone. Cyclic voltammograms (CV) of TiO2 particulated electrodes under UV illumination experiments were carried out in either saturated O2 or N2 solutions for a direct correlation with the photocatalytic process. In addition, the effect of different reaction conditions on the photocatalytic efficiency under UV light in both aqueous and gaseous phases was also investigated. CV curves with the addition of acetone under UV light showed a negative shift of the photocurrent onset, confirming the efficient transfer of photoproduced reactive oxygen species (ROSs), e.g., hydroxyl radicals, or holes to acetone molecules. The photocatalytic experiments showed that the two nano-sized samples exhibit the best photocatalytic performance. The different photoactivity of the micro-sized samples is probably attributed to their morphological differences, affecting both the amount and distribution of free ROSs involved in the photooxidation reaction.

Decahedral anatase particles (DAPs) have been prepared by the gas-phase method, characterized, and analyzed for property-governed photocatalytic activity. It has been found that depending on the reaction systems, different properties control the photocatalytic activity, that is, the particle aspect ratio, the density of electron traps and the morphology seem to be responsible for the efficiency of water oxidation, methanol dehydrogenation and oxidative decomposition of acetic acid, respectively. For the discussion on the dependence of the photocatalytic activity on the morphology and/or the symmetry other titania-based photocatalysts have also been analyzed, that is, octahedral anatase particles (OAP), commercial titania P25, inverse opal titania with and without incorporated gold NPs in void spaces and plasmonic photocatalysts (titania with deposits of gold). It has been concluded that though the morphology governs photocatalytic activity, the symmetry (despite its importance in many cases) rather does not control the photocatalytic performance.
