AbstractUnderstanding and modeling of land use change is of great significance to environmental protection and land use planning. The cellular automata-Markov chain (CA-Markov) model is a powerful tool to predict the change of land use, and the prediction accuracy is limited by many factors. To explore the impact of land use and socio-economic factors on the prediction of CA-Markov model on county scale, this paper uses the CA-Markov model to simulate the land use of Anren County in 2016, based on the land use of 1996 and 2006. Then, the correlation between the land use, socio-economic data and the prediction accuracy was analyzed. The results show that Shannon’s evenness index and population density having an important impact on the accuracy of model predictions, negatively correlate with kappa coefficient. The research not only provides a reference for correct use of the model but also helps us to understand the driving mechanism of landscape changes.

In this paper are presented solutions to develop algorithms for digital image processing focusing particularly on edge detection. Edge detection is one of the most important phases used in computer vision and image processing applications and also in human image understanding. In this chapter, implementation of classical edge detection algorithms it is presented and also implementation of algorithms based on the theory of Cellular Automata (CA). This work is totally related to the idea of understanding the impact of the inherently local information processing of CA on their ability to perform a managed computation at the global level. If a suitable encoding of a digital image is used, in some cases, it is possible to achieve better results in comparison with the solutions obtained by means of conventional approaches. The software application which is able to process images in order to detect edges using both conventional algorithms and CA based ones is written in C# programming language and experimental results are presented for images with different sizes and backgrounds.

Floods are problems which become disasters if they persist for a long duration. Out of all kind of floods, a rainfall-induced flood is just a problem created by a lack of water storage methods, which can be eliminated if a better removal system is available. For flood avoidance, many methods have been used, out of which a dedicated drainage pipeline structure may facilitate better removal. This article shows the theory of cellular automata with its new application for flood avoidance using ground leveling. This article analyzes the performance of hexagonal shapes compared with a popular rectangle grid. The article also shows the impact of various layers on the size of the tank. This article provides knowledge towards the flood avoidance for a flood free smart city.
