AbstractRecent advances in Internet applications have facilitated information spreading and, thanks to a wide variety of mobile devices and the burgeoning 5G networks, users easily and quickly gain access to information. Great amounts of digital information moreover have contributed to the emergence of recommender systems that help to filter information. When the rise of mobile networks has pushed forward the growth of social media networks and users get used to posting whatever they do and wherever they visit on the Web, such quick social media updates already make it difficult for users to find historical data. For this reason, this paper presents a social network-based recommender system. Our purpose is to build a user-centered recommender system to exclude the products that users are disinterested in according to user preferences and their friends' shopping experiences so as to make recommendations effective. Since there might be no corresponding reference value for new products or services, we use indirect relations between friends and “friends’ friends” as well as sentinel friends to improve the recommendation accuracy. The simulation result has proven that our proposed mechanism is efficient in enhancing recommendation accuracy.

AbstractA range of important studies have recently explored adult women’s experiences of receiving unwanted dick pics (Amundsen, 2020). However, to date there has been limited research that has explored teen girls’ experiences of receiving unwanted penis images in depth. To address this gap we draw upon our findings from a qualitative study using focus group interviews and arts based drawing methods to explore social media image sharing practices with 144 young people aged 11–18 in seven secondary schools in England. We argue that being bombarded with unwanted dick pics on social media platforms like Snapchat normalises harassing practices as signs of desirability and popularity for girls, but suggest that being sent unsolicited dick pics from boys at school is more difficult for girls to manage or report than ignoring or blocking random older senders. We also found that due to sexual double standards girls were not able to leverage dick pics for status in the same way boys can use girls’ nudes as social currency, since girls faced the possibility of being shamed for being known recipients of dick pics. Finally we explore how some girls challenge abusive elements of toxic masculinity in the drawing sessions and our conclusion argues that unwanted dick pics should always be understood as forms of image based sexual harassment.

The findings of the study include: digital identity construction, image sharing and social media, the perception of public vs. private, image sharing as critique, and iPhoneography as visual communication. Pedagogical implications of incorporating iPhoneography into existing visual art curricula are explored, and include suggestions for utlilzing iPhoneography to enhance skills in thematic development, as well as an effective tool for formative assessment. Finally, ways to challenge students creatively by using prompts inspired by contemporary photographers are proposed.

In today’s social media platforms, when users upload or share their media (photos, videos, bookmarks, etc.), they often annotate it with keywords (called tags). Annotating the media helps in retrieving and browsing resources, and also allows the users to search and browse annotated media. In many social media platforms like Flickr or YouTube, users have to manually annotate their resources, which is inconvenient and time consuming. Tag recommendation is the process of suggesting relevant tags for a given resource, and a tag recommender is a system that recommends the tags. A tag recommender system is important for social media platforms to help users in annotating their resources. Many of the existing tag recommendation methods exploit only the tagging information (Jaschke et al., 2007, Marinho & Schmidt-Thieme, 2008, Sigurbjornsson & van Zwol, 2008). However, many social media platforms support other media features like geographical coordinates. These features can be exploited for improving tag recommendation. In this chapter, a comparison of three types of social media features for tag recommendation is presented and evaluated. The features presented in this chapter include geographical-coordinates, low-level image descriptors, and tags.

Sharing images online, particularly through social networking sites (SNSs), is a widespread activity. The popularity of image sharing on SNSs has provided researchers with a unique opportunity for investigating how and why we communicate with each other via images. This chapter discusses research about photo sharing on three popular SNSs: Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. The unique affordances of each platform have resulted in differences in the images people share on them, and why people choose to share or view different images across the different SNSs. Personal characteristics also shape how and why we share images online. The chapter, therefore, also considers the role of age, gender, and personality on image sharing behaviors and preferences. Finally, the chapter outlines our current understanding of the interrelationship between image sharing and mental health. This chapter thus considers: Who shares images on social media? What do they share? Why do they share these images? What are the mental health consequences of image sharing on SNSs?

With the trend towards social interaction over the Internet and the mushrooming of Web sites such as MySpace, Facebook and YouTube in the social computing space, practitioners and researchers are motivated to explain the sudden surge in user interest. The authors propose that interactivity is an important and appropriate subject of investigation to shed light on this explosion in social media use. Based on a review of the extant literature, they justify the use of interactivity for addressing research questions motivated by this new phenomenon. In particular, they propose a redefinition of interactivity for the social computing domain and term it Social Computing Interactivity (SCI). The authors suggest possible operationalizations of the dimensions of SCI and explore theory bases which would inform a study of their relevance in predicting the continued growth of social computing.
