Population cancer screening is aimed at reducing the burden of disease in a population by the early detection of cancer, and, where possible, by the detection of premalignant disease. For screening to be effective, it is essential that early detection is truly beneficial and does not merely appear to be effective by virtue of lead time and other biases. In this chapter, screening programmes for breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer are covered in detail, and the current status of prostate and lung cancer screening is also considered. Throughout, the emphasis is on the underlying evidence for these interventions, and existing screening strategies are described.
