Equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) was performed on as-cast ZW1101 (Mg-11wt%Zn- 0.9wt%Y) Mg alloy containing quasicrystallines. The grain size of α-Mg was effectively refined, and coarse eutectic quasicrystalline phases were broken and dispersed in the alloy by ECAE. The alloy processed by ECAE exhibited a good combination of high strength and high ductility, which is due to the grain refinement and fine dispersed quasicrystallines in the alloy.

Abstract Due to demand of strong toughness of thin walled tube, and good secondary forming properties and high-precision dimension, New plastic forming method should be researched to achieve a complete filling, uniform deformation and microstructure evolution during forming process.To obtain the deformation mechanisms of a new composite extrusion for thin walled tube fabricated by tube corrugated equal channel angular extrusion has been researched which is shorten as “TC-ECAE” in this paper. Finite element DEFORMTM-3D software to investigate the plastic deformation behavior of magnesium billet during TC-ECAE process has been employed. Computed parameters including workpiece material characteristics and process conditions have been taken into consideration. The pridictions of strains distributions and damage distributions and effective stress distributions and flow velocities distributions and microstructures evolutions have been explored. The results proved that the TC-ECAE process is a forming method for magnesium alloy tube which is suitable for large scale industrial application. The TC-ECAE process would cause serve plastic deformation and improve the dynamic recrystallization of magnesium alloy during TC-ECAE process.

The amount of stored energy of cold work for the processing routes A and Bc of Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) process has been measured using differential scanning calorimetry. The study is preceded by the effect of amount of ECAE deformation on materials of different stacking fault energies, namely Cu and Ag. The results indicate that the different processing routes have significant effect on the stored energy, which is likely to affect the grain refinement process.

Equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) experiments were conducted on as-cast pure Cu, Cu–10%Zn, and Cu–30%Zn, using a 90 die for up to 4 passes. The stacking fault energies (SFEs) of the three materials decrease with increasing Zn content. The microstructures and textures of the processed billets were analyzed using optical microscope and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The results show that the structures of the three materials were all significantly refined after ECAE and a lower SFE led to a finer microstructure with a higher density of shear bands. The textures were considerably weakened after 4 passes, more apparent in the material with a lower SFE. It is concluded that the SFE has significant influences on both the grain refinement and texture evolution during ECAE deformation.

Equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) was applied to an extruded ZW1101 (Mg - 11wt%Zn - 0.9wt%Y) Mg alloy containing quasicrystallines. The as-extruded ZW1101 alloy had an initial grain size of about 12 µm and bands of quasicrystalline phases parallel to the extrusion direction. After the extruded alloy was subjected to ECAE processing, the grain size was refined to about 0.5 µm, and the quasicrystalline phases were further broken and dispersed in the matrix. After the ECAE processing, the micro-hardness and yield strength of the alloy were increased, however, the ultimate tensile strength and the ductility of the alloy were slightly decreased.
