The existed concrete column reinforced by external steel tube is a common reinforcement technique and widely used in engineering. However, the computational theory on bearing capacity of the reinforced structure is insufficient at present. In the condition that the existed column concrete before completely unloading is reinforced or the initial stress level is low, the mechanics characteristics of reinforced components were analyzed based on the limit equilibrium method, and then the computational equations of the bearing capacity subjected to axial loading after the short column pier reinforced structure had been deduced. Comparing the calculation results with the correspondent experimental data shows that the deduced equation can provide reasonable results for predicting the axial bearing capacity, which provides a support for the computation of the bearing capacity for the reinforcement pier in practice.

In this study a limit equilibrium method is proposed to determine the bearing capacity of strip foundations on geosynthetic reinforced sand soils. A two-layered granular soil was foreseen to represent the loose in situ soil and the compacted fill above the reinforcement. First the modified bearing capacity factors Nq and Nγ were derived for the two layered granular reinforced soil. The bearing capacities were also calculated for different reinforcement geometries and soil properties using Finite Element analyses. The bearing capacities obtained from Finite Element and Limit Equilibrium analyses were compared, it was seen a good agreement. Therefore, it was concluded that the new limit equilibrium method proposed in this paper for reinforced two-layered soils can be successfully used in calculating the bearing capacities of geosynthetic reinforced soils.

At present, in-situ stress was not considered in Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) of slopes, the influence of in-situ stress is very small on the stability of conventional slopes, but in deep-depressed open-pit mines, the influence should not be neglected. Formula for calculating the Factor of Safety (FOS) under the effect of horizontal in-situ stress was deduced using General Slice Method (GSM) of two-dimensional (2D) limit equilibrium method in this paper，a corresponding program SSLOPE was built, and the software was used in a deep- depressed open-pit iron mine. The results show that the FOS of the slope decreased by 20% when horizontal in-situ stress is considered, some reinforcements must be taken. Therefore, the influence of in-situ stress on slope stability should be taken into account in deep open –pit mines.
