Electroless deposition of nickel tungsten on mild steel was conducted using acetic bath, containing nickel sulphate and sodium tungstate in the alkaline medium. The influence of sodium acetate and sodium tungstate on deposits was investigated and characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) to assess the phase, content and microstructure features. The surface roughness of coating was measured using atomic force microscope (AFM) while the hardness was investigated using Vickers microhardness. The results show that deposits have smooth surfaces, Ra = 0.53 μm, with a nanocrystalline structure, crystallite size hardness of deposits decreases as the concentration of sodium tungstate increases.

Electroless nickel phosphorous-Nylon 66 composite coating was done on low carbon steel. The incorporation of nylon particles in electroless nickel phosphorous coating is conformed from Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies. EN nylon composite coating shows high coating thickness and corrosive strength than EN coating for similar condition. Nylon particle were evenly distributed in EN matrix and contributed to corrosion resistance of the coating.

Electroless nickel plating with potassium titanate whisker was co-deposited on medium carbon steel substrates. The microstructure of the composite coatings was investigated. The effect of aging temperature on the microstructure of the composite coatings was studied using X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the composite coatings will turn into crystal state with increasing heat treatment temperature. Experimental results also show that a maximum hardness is achieved for the composite coating after heat treatment at 400°C for 1 hour. The corrosion resistance and tribological properties of the composite coatings are not inferior to those of electroless Ni-P coating.

Nickel-tungsten alloy were fabricated by electrodeposition on carbon steel. The influences of saccharin sodium on the coatings were analyzed using XRD, SEM, and hardness tester. This study reveals that the presence of saccharine sodium has a profound impact on the morphology of the coatings. Moreover, the addition of saccharine sodium tends to enhance the tungsten content in the coatings along with hardness and the grain size of the deposits.
