The paper deals with the issue of cutting zone and chip compression. The aim was to analyse the microstructure transverse section of the cutting zone on a metallographic cut, due to determined values of chip compression and plastic deformation, which affect the cutting process efficiency. The tested cutting tool material was coated with cemented carbide. The selected workpiece materials were C45 medium carbon steel of ISO grade and 62SiMnCr4 tool steel of ISO (W.Nr. 1.2101) grade. In the experiments, a DMG CTX alpha 500 turning centre was used. The cutting speed and feed were varied, and the depth of the cut was kept constant during the turning. The plastic deformation and chip compression determine the efficiency of the cutting process. The higher compression requires more work to perform the process and, therefore, it requires more energy for doing so. With the increase of the cutting speed, the deformation for C45 steel is decreased. The rapid deformation reduction was observed when the cutting speed was increased from 145 m/min to 180 m/min. Generally, deformation is decreasing with the increase of the feed. Only at a cutting speed of 145 m/min was the deformation elevation observed, when the feed was increased from 0.4 mm to 0.6 mm. During the turning of the 62SiMnCr4 tool steel we observed an error value at a cutting speed of 145 m/min and a feed of 0.4 mm was the middle cutting parameter. However, feed dependence was clear: With an increase of the feed, the plastic deformation was decreasing. This decreasing was more rapid with the increasing of the cutting speed. Besides plastic deformation, there was analysed chip compression as well. With the increasing of the cutting speed, there was a decrease of the chip compression. Due to a lack of information in the area of the chip compression and the plastic deformation in the cutting process, we decided to investigate the cutting zone for the turning of tool steels 62SiMnCr4, which was compared with the reference steel C45. The results could be applied to increase the efficiency of the process and improvement of the surface integrity.

This work deals with the kinetic aspects of bainite formation during isothermal holding above and below the martensite start (Ms~275 °C) temperature using a low-alloy, high-silicon DIN 1.5025 steel in a range suitable for achieving ultrafine/nanostructured bainite. Dilatation measurements were conducted to study transformation behaviour and kinetics, while the microstructural features were examined using laser scanning confocal microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques combined with hardness measurements. The results showed that for isothermal holding above the Ms temperature, the maximum bainitic transformation rate decreased with the decrease in isothermal holding temperature between 450 and 300 °C. On the other hand, for isothermal holding below the Ms temperature at 250 and 200 °C, the maximum rate of transformation was achieved corresponding to region I due to the partitioning of carbon and also possibly because of the ledged growth of isothermal martensite soon after the start of isothermal holding. In addition, a second peak was obvious at about 100 and 500 s, respectively, during holding at 250 and 200 °C due to the occurrence of bainitic transformation, marking the beginning of region II.

Tool wear is a major factor that affects the productivity of any machining operation and needs to be controlled for achieving automation. It affects the surface finish, tolerances, dimensions of the workpiece, increases machine down time, and sometimes performance of machine tool and personnel are affected. This chapter deals with the application of artificial neural network (ANN) models for tool condition monitoring (TCM) in milling operations. The data required for training and testing the models studied and developed are from live experiments conducted in a machine shop on a widely used steel, medium carbon steel (En 8) using uncoated carbide inserts. Acoustic emission data and surface roughness data has been used in model development. The goal is for developing an optimal ANN model, in terms of compact architecture, least training time, and its ability to generalize well on unseen (test) data. Growing cell structures (GCS) network has been found to achieve these requirements.

In the research, the corrosion and mechanical properties, as well as susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement, of two casing pipe steels were investigated in order to assess their serviceability in corrosive and hydrogenating environments under operation in oil and gas wells. Two carbon steels with different microstructures were tested: the medium carbon steel (MCS) with bainitic microstructure and the medium-high carbon steel (MHCS) with ferrite–pearlite microstructure. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of the MHCS in CO2-containing acid chloride solution, simulating formation water, was significantly lower than that of the MCS, which was associated with microstructure features. The higher strength MCS with the dispersed microstructure was less susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement under preliminary electrolytic hydrogenation than the lower strength MHCS with the coarse-grained microstructure. To estimate the embrittlement of steels, the method of the FEM load simulation of the specimens with cracks was used. The constitutive relations of the true stress–strain of the tested steels were defined. The stress and strain dependences in the crack tip were calculated. It was found that the MHCS was characterized by the lower plasticity on the stage of the neck formation of the specimen and the lower fracture toughness than the other one. The obtained results demonstrating the limitations of the usage of casing pipes made of the MHCS with the coarse-grained ferrite/pearlite microstructure in corrosive and hydrogenating environments were discussed.

Ballistic resistant materials are materials containing right combination of hardness, strength, and toughness. The quench process produces high hardness and tensile strength but decreases toughness. The hardening process has been performed using an induction machine and a tempering process on a medium carbon steel plate. This work aimed to determine and analyze the effect of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) on steel plates that have been quenched tempered. This research utilized steel plates of 130 x 130 x 8 mm size which has been quenched and then immersed in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196°C for 1, 5, 10, and 20 days. The micro Vickers hardness test specimen, tensile test and charpy impact test were made to determine the effect of immersion time. The test results and analysis showed that DCT had the ability to change microstructure, improve the hardness, tensile strength, and impact toughness. Furthermore, the maximum hardness was obtained during the immersion treatment of 20 days, which was 449.45 VHN and 1107.53 MPa, respectively. However, the highest toughness was obtained during the immersion of 10 days, which was 1,001 J/mm2. In order to get the optimal combination of ballistic characters, further ballistic testing is needed, both in simulation using the finite element method and ballistic experiment test.

The use of metals in the environment is especially important in environments such rubbish in heavy equipment or trucks, especially those of the tailgate is a tool to bring a variety of organic waste and inorganic bring the matter dissolved through a liquid called leachate and make contact or direct contact with the steel so that corrosion occurs due to leachate or wastewater flow contains many corrosive compounds that make part tailgate become quickly corroded. This study aims to determine the bias steel resist corrosion rate. The steel used is steel steel ST-41 and ST-60 is a low carbon steel and medium carbon steel. The methods used in research in the methods of losing weight and observe the types of corrosion that occurs by means of immersion with ASTM G31-72 which vary contact time for 3 weeks. Based on research conducted showed the corrosion rate of the fastest occur in steel ST-60 with a contact time of 1 week soaked the leachate and 2 weeks in contact with the air due to differences in the composition of the steel ST-60 and steel ST-41 which has a chromium content so high that steel ST-41 is superior in resisting corrosion rate while the type of corrosion that occurs is evenly corrosion and atmospheric corrosion.

In this study, the changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties during isothermal heat treatment of cast steel before and after hot deformation were investigated using medium-carbon steel with low alloy content. The microstructural characteristics of the cast and hot-rolled medium-carbon steel under isothermal heat-treatment conditions were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with electron backscatter diffraction. The variation in the mechanical properties was evaluated using Rockwell hardness and tensile tests. After maintaining an austenitizing condition at 1200 °C for 30 min, an isothermal heat treatment was performed in the range 350–500 °C, followed by rapid cooling with water. Both the cast steel and hot-rolled steel did not completely transform into bainitic ferrite during isothermal heat treatment. The partially untransformed microstructure was a mixture of martensite and acicular ferrite. At 500 °C, the prior austenite phase changed to Widmanstätten ferrite and pearlite. At 450 °C, bainitic ferrite and cementite were coarsened by the coalescence of ferrite and subsequent diffusive growth. The mechanical properties increased as the isothermal heat-treatment temperature decreased, and the hardness of the cast steel was generally higher than that of the hot-rolled steel. Hardness and strength showed similar trends, and overall mechanical properties tend to decrease as the isothermal heat-treatment temperature increases, but there are slight differences depending on complex factors such as various phase fractions and grain size.

Abstract The possibility of cathodic plasma electrolytic boriding of medium-carbon steel in an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride and boric acid followed by anodic plasma electrolytic polishing in an ammonium sulfate solution on the same equipment with a change in the operating voltage is shown. The morphology and roughness of the surface, microhardness of the modified layer have been investigated. Wear resistance was studied under dry friction conditions. It has been established that cathodic boriding at 850 °C for 5–30 min leads to the hardening of the surface layer up to 1050 HV with an increase in roughness by 1.5–2.5 times and wear resistance by 3.5 times. Subsequent anodic plasma electrolytic polishing of the boriding surface leads to a decrease in roughness with an increase in wear resistance by 2.3 times.
