Abstract A simplified model for active control of vibration of a suspended cable is proposed. The model is constructed so that it considers the dynamic characteristics of the cable at the location where a vibration absorber is attached together with the absorber itself. The control is applicable for attenuating high-frequency, low-amplitude cable vibration due to periodic excitation that may model the wind effect. The methodology to choose control parameters is based on the dynamics of the vibration absorber and the stability analysis of the controlled system. The model takes into account the time delay that is always present in digital control due to sampling. Results reveal that the application of active control reduces vibration amplitude significantly provided that samples are taken in short time intervals. Increasing time delay reduces the effects of control and above a critical value, the vibration amplitude becomes even greater than without control. The importance of time delay grows with increasing excitation frequency, which means a limitation of the application of the control methodology developed. This limitation concerns the highest excitation frequencies.

The nonlinear effect incurred by time delay in vibration control is investigated in this study via a vibration absorber coupled with a continuous beam structure. The stability of the vibration absorber coupled structure system with time-delay coupling is firstly studied, which provides a general guideline for the potential time delay to be introduced to the system. Then it is shown that there is a specific region for the time delay which can bring bifurcation modes to the dynamic response of the coupling system, and the vibration energy at low frequencies can be transferred or absorbed due to the bifurcation mode and the vibration in the corresponding frequency range is thus suppressed. The nonlinear mechanism of this vibration suppression incurred by the coupling time delay is discussed in detail, which provides a novel and alternative approach to the analysis, design, and control of vibration absorbers in engineering practice.

Fractional-order gene regulatory networks with time delay (DFGRNs) have proven that they are more suitable to model gene regulation mechanism than integer-order. In this paper, a novel DFGRN is proposed. The existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium point for the DFGRN are proved under certain conditions. On this basis, the conditions on the global asymptotic stability are established by using the Lyapunov method and comparison theorem for the DFGRN, and the stability conditions are dependent on the fractional-order [Formula: see text]. Finally, numerical simulations show that the obtained results are reasonable.

The time delay between measuring the structural response, and applying the designed active control forces may affect the controlled response of the structure if not taken into consideration. In this paper it is shown how to design the control forces to compensate for the delay effect. It is also shown that the time delay effect can be used as a criterion to judge the effectiveness of the proposed control mechanism. As an illustration of the theoretical consideration, a numerical example in which a tall building is controlled by means of active tendons is presented.

Disruptions with runaway electron generation have been deliberately induced by injection of argon using a disruption mitigation valve. A second disruption mitigation valve has been utilised to inject varying amounts of helium after a short time delay. No generation of runaway electrons has been observed when more than a critical amount of helium has been injected no later than 5 ms after the triggering of the first valve. The required amount of helium for suppression of runaway electron generation is up to one order of magnitude lower than the critical density according to Connor & Hastie (1975) and Rosenbluth & Putvinski (1997).

The stability of a class of static interval neural networks with time delay in the leakage term is investigated. By using the method ofM-matrix and the technique of delay differential inequality, we obtain some sufficient conditions ensuring the global exponential robust stability of the networks. The results in this paper extend the corresponding conclusions without leakage delay. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

In this study, a complex consisting of 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin, (named dual chiral-achiral selector complex) was used for the determination of two novel potential anticancer agents of (I) and (II) aminoalkanol derivatives. This work aimed at developing an effective method that can be utilized for the determination of I (S), I (R), and II (S) and II (R) enantiomers of (I) and (II) compounds through the use of a dual chiral-achiral selector complex consisting of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin system by applying capillary electrophoresis. This combination proved to be beneficial in achieving high separation selectivity due to the combined effects of different modes of chiral discrimination. The enantiomers of (I) and (II) compounds were separated within a very short time of 3.6–7.2 min, in pH 2.5 phosphate buffer containing 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin system at a concentration of 5 and 10 mM, respectively, at 25 °C and +10 kV. The detection wavelength of the detector was set at 200 nm. The LOD for I (S), I (R), II (S), and II (R) was 65.2, 65.6, 65.1, and 65.7 ng/mL, respectively. LOQ for I (S), I (R), II (S), and II (R) was 216.5, 217.8, 217.1, and 218.1 ng/mL, respectively. Recovery was 94.9–99.9%. The repeatability and reproducibility of the method based on the values of the migration time, and the area under the peak was 0.3–2.9% RSD. The stability of the method was determined at 0.1–4.9% RSD. The developed method was used in the pilot studies for determining the enantiomers I (S), I (R), II (S), and II (R) in the blood serum.

An adaptive tuned vibration absorber (ATVA) can retune itself in response to a time-varying excitation frequency, enabling effective vibration attenuation over a range of frequencies. For a wide tuning range the ATVA is best realized through the use of a beam-like structure whose mechanical properties can be adapted through servo-actuation. This is readily achieved either by repositioning the beam supports (‘moveable-supports ATVA’) or by repositioning attached masses (‘moveable-masses ATVA’), with the former design being more commonly used, despite its relative constructional complexity. No research to date has addressed the fact that the effective mass of such devices varies as they are retuned, thereby causing a variation in their attenuation capacity. This article derives both the tuned frequency and effective mass characteristics of such ATVAs through a unified non-dimensional modal-based analysis that enables the designer to quantify the expected performance for any given application. The analysis reveals that the moveable-masses concept offers significantly superior vibration attenuation. Motivated by this analysis, a novel ATVA with actuator-incorporated moveable masses is proposed, which has the additional advantage of constructional simplicity. Experimental results from a demonstrator correlate reasonably well with the theory, and vibration control tests with logic-based feedback control demonstrate the efficacy of the device.

Vibroisolation systems of base desks for machine and testing facilities usually cannot effect efficient changing of their own frequencies according to operating conditions. Especially in the case of the automotive industry, the possibility of changing natural frequencies is very desirable. During varying operating conditions, the vibroisolation system needs to be regulated easily and quickly regarding the minimisation of dynamical forces transmitted to the ground and to ensure the stability of the testing process. This paper describes one of the options of tuning the base desk at a relatively short time and by sufficient change of own frequencies, which decides the dynamical behaviour of the whole system.
