Tracking the time evolution of soft matter systems via topological structural heterogeneity

Persistent homology is an effective topological data analysis tool to quantify the structural and morphological features of soft materials, but so far it has not been used to characterise the dynamical behaviour of complex soft matter systems. Here, we introduce structural heterogeneity, a topological characteristic for semi-ordered materials that captures their degree of organisation at a mesoscopic level and tracks their time-evolution, ultimately detecting the order-disorder transition at the microscopic scale. We show that structural heterogeneity tracks structural changes in a liquid crystal nanocomposite, reveals the effect of confined geometry on the nematic-isotropic and isotropic-nematic phase transitions, and uncovers physical differences between these two processes. The system used in this work is representative of a class of composite nanomaterials, partially ordered and with complex structural and physical behaviour, where their precise characterisation poses significant challenges. Our developed analytic framework can provide both a qualitative and quantitative characterisation of the dynamical behaviour of a wide range of semi-ordered soft matter systems.

Periodic Motion and Frequency Energy Plots of Dynamical Systems Coupled with Piecewise Nonlinear Energy Sink

The frequency-energy plots (FEPs) of two-degree-of-freedom linear structures attached to a piecewise nonlinear energy sink (PNES) are generated here and thoroughly investigated. This study provides the FEP analysis of such systems for further understanding to nonlinear targeted energy transfer (TET) by the PNES. The attached PNES to the considered linear dynamical systems incorporates a symmetrical clearance zone of zero stiffness content where the boundaries of the zone are coupled with the linear structure by linear stiffness elements. In addition, linear viscous damping is selected to be continuous during the PNES mass oscillation. The underlying nonlinear dynamical behaviour of the considered structure-PNES systems is investigated by generating the fundamental backbone curves of the FEP and the bifurcated subharmonic resonance branches using numerical continuation methods. Accordingly, interesting dynamical behaviour of the nonlinear normal modes (NNMs) of the structure-PNES system on different backbones and subharmonic resonance branches has been observed. In addition, the imposed wavelet transform frequency spectrums on the FEPs have revealed that the TET takes place in multiple resonance captures where it is dominated by the nonlinear action of the PNES.

Two-dimensional buoyant plumes in a uniform co-flow

The behaviour of turbulent, buoyant, planar plumes is fundamentally coupled to the environment within which they develop. The effect of a background stratification directly influences a plumes buoyancy and has been the subject of numerous studies. Conversely, the effect of an ambient co-flow, which directly influences the vertical momentum of a plume, has not previously been the subject of theoretical investigation. The governing conservation equations for the case of a uniform co-flow are derived and the local dynamical behaviour of the plume is shown to be characterised by the scaled source Richardson number and the relative magnitude of the co-flow and plume source velocities. For forced, pure and lazy plume release conditions the co-flow acts to narrow the plume and reduce both the dilution and the asymptotic Richardson number relative to the classic zero co-flow case. Analytical solutions are developed for pure plumes from line sources, and for highly forced and highly lazy releases from sources of finite width in a weak co-flow. Contrary to releases in quiescent surroundings, our solutions show that all classes of release can exhibit plume contraction and the associated necking. For entraining plumes, a dynamical invariance spatially only occurs for pure and forced releases and we derive the co-flow strengths that lead to this invariance.

Cosmological model with time varying deceleration parameter in F(R, G) gravity

In this paper, we study the dynamical behaviour of the universe in the F (R, G) theory of gravity, where R and G respectively denote the Ricci scalar and Gauss-Bonnet invariant. Our wide analysis encompasses the energy conditions, cosmographic parameters, Om(z) diagnostic, stability and the viability of reconstructing the referred model through a scalar field formalism. The model obtained here shows the quintessence like behaviour at late times.

Leidenfrost drop dynamics: a forgotten past and modern day rediscoveries

When drops of liquid are placed onto highly heated substrates at temperatures well above their boiling point, the drops float on a thin layer of vapour formed between the liquid and the hot surface. In a 290 year old phenomenon referred to as the Leidenfrost effect, drops freed from contact with the surface below can undergo a range of surprising and unexpected dynamical behaviour. In this paper we trace various early developments associated with the dynamics of Leidenfrost drops. By showing how many of the more recent discoveries found in the dynamic behaviour of Leidenfrost drops were either anticipated or antedated, we hope to draw attention to the long, rich, and largely overlooked history of the Leidenfrost effect and show there is much one can learn from its forgotten past.

Simple dynamics in non-monotone Kolmogorov systems

In this paper we analyse the global dynamical behaviour of some classical models in the plane. Informally speaking we prove that the folkloric criteria based on the relative positions of the nullclines for Lotka–Volterra systems are also valid in a wide class of discrete systems. The method of proof consists of dividing the plane into suitable positively invariant regions and applying the theory of translation arcs in a subtle manner. Our approach allows us to extend several results of the theory of monotone systems to nonmonotone systems. Applications in models with weak Allee effect, population models for pioneer-climax species, and predator–prey systems are given.

PNEUMATIC VIBROISOLATION SYSTEM OF THE BASE DESK WITH NATURAL FREQUENCY REGULATION

Vibroisolation systems of base desks for machine and testing facilities usually cannot effect efficient changing of their own frequencies according to operating conditions. Especially in the case of the automotive industry, the possibility of changing natural frequencies is very desirable. During varying operating conditions, the vibroisolation system needs to be regulated easily and quickly regarding the minimisation of dynamical forces transmitted to the ground and to ensure the stability of the testing process. This paper describes one of the options of tuning the base desk at a relatively short time and by sufficient change of own frequencies, which decides the dynamical behaviour of the whole system.
