The paper deals with numerical modeling of delamination of laminate plate consists of unidirectional fiber reinforced layers. The methodology adopts the first-order shear laminate plate theory and fracture and contact mechanics. There are described sublaminate modeling and delamination modeling by the help of finite element analysis. With the interface modeling there is calculated the energy release rate along the lamination front. Numerical results are given for mixed mode delamination problems by implementing the method in a 2D finite analysis, which utilizes shear deformable plate elements and interface elements. Numerical example is done by the commercial ANSYS code.

The Difference

Fracture along an interface between materials plays a major role in failure of material. In this investigation, finite element calculations with Kachanov–Rabotnov damage law were carried out to study the creep damage distribution near the interface cavity in bimaterial specimens. The specimens with central hole were divided into three types. The material parameters of K-R law used in this paper were chosen for a brittle material and ductile material. All calculations were performed under four load cases. Due to the difference between elastic moduli of the bounded materials, the elastic stress field as a function of the Young’s modulus ratio (R=E1/E2) was determined. At the same time, the influence of model type on elastic stress distribution near the cavity was considered. Under the same conditions, the material with larger modulus is subjected to larger stress. The creep damage calculations show that the location of the maximum damage is different for each model. The distributions of creep damage for all three models are dependent on the material properties and load cases.

ABSTRACTNitrogen implantation can be used to control gate oxide thicknesses [1,2]. This study aims at studying the fundamental behavior of nitrogen diffusion in silicon. Nitrogen at sub-amorphizing doses has been implanted as N2+ at 40 keV and 200 keV into Czochralski silicon wafers. Furnace anneals have been performed at a range of temperatures from 650°C through 1050°C. The resulting annealed profiles show anomalous diffusion behavior. For the 40 keV implants, nitrogen diffuses very rapidly and segregates at the silicon/ silicon-oxide interface. Modeling of this behavior is based on the theory that the diffusion is limited by the time to create a mobile nitrogen interstitial.

A Crack Model of a Bone Cement Interface

This paper is concerned with the fracture mechanics of a bone-cement interface that includes a cohesive zone effect on the crack faces. This accounts for the experimentally observed strengthening mechanism due to the mechanical interlock between the crack faces. Edge crack models are developed where the cohesive zone is simulated by a continuous or a discrete distribution of linear or nonlinear springs. It is shown that the solution obtained by assuming a homogeneous material is fairly close to the exact solution for the bimaterial interface edge crack problem. On the basis of that approximation, the analysis is conducted for the problem of two interacting edge cracks, one at the interface, and the other one in the cement. The small crack that was observed to initiate in the cement, close to the bone-cement interface, does not affect much the mode I stress-intensity factor at the tip of the interface crack. However it may grow, leading to a catastrophic breakdown of the cement. The analysis and following discussion point out an interdependency between bone-cement interface strength and cement strength not previously appreciated. The suggested crack models provide a framework for quantifying the fracture mechanisms at the bone-cement interface.
