The method of producing molten metal powder according to the European laser sintering system (EOSINT) was used to prepare the experimental material. The used powder metal material was designated EOS Maraging Steel - MS1. It is a steel powder, which is optimized especially for processing in EOSINT M 280 systems. The measurement of tribological characteristics of prepared materials was performed using the standard STN ISO 20808: 2004. The ball-on-disc dry sliding friction and wear experiments have been made on prepared materials in contact with steel ball. For the experiment, there were determined the following conditions: the value of normal load 5 N, the sliding radius 2 mm. Wear testing was carried out at room temperature 25°C using the ball-on-disc technique. Wear behaviour of the prepared material was studied in dry sliding; relative humidity was 26-28%. The normal load of 5 N; and sliding speed of 0.1 m/s was applied. The total sliding distance was 1000 m. The worn surface was analysed by confocal microscope and scanning electron microscope.

Research on the applications of magneto-rheological (MR) elastomers in mechanical engineering has greatly expanded, whereas the performance of MR fluids in tribology has rarely been investigated. In this study, the tribological characteristics of an MR elastomer are identified in order to improve tribological performance with the activation of a magnetic field. Microscopic changes in the surface and in the MR particles are investigated. The friction and wear of an MR elastomer is measured using a pin-on-disc tester under applied and unapplied magnetic fields. In addition, the linear sliding friction of an MR elastomer with respect to different velocities and loads is measured using a linear sliding tester.

Facility for the tribological characteristics studying of a metal – ceramics pair and parameters of ceramic samples irradiation on the helium ions linear accelerator with energies 0.12 and 4 MeV are resulted. Profiles of damageability and occurrence of target atoms along of helium ions range are calculated for the irradiated TiO2 and Al2O3. Sputtering ratios and dependence of the sputtered atoms quantity on samples thickness are received. Calculations on density change of the irradiated samples are made. Experimental results of a sliding friction factor measurement depending on cycle’s quantity, temperature and irradiation doses are presented. On the basis of microscopic researches and calculation data conclusions are drawn about irradiation influence on interacting pair’s tribological characteristics.

Tribological characteristics of steel combinations are observed in this study using rotating tribometer. Experiments are done under different roughnesses ofpin slides on stainless steel disc for different operating conditionsCertain trends are obtained between friction and rubbing durations. During experiment, it is foundthat there are significant relationship between friction coefficient and operating parameters. In fact, at initial stage friction coefficients of tested material are increased at a particular level with time and finally the friction becomes steady for remaining investigation period. Studies indicate that lower values of friction are obtained with higher loads for SS 202 slides against different roughnesses ofmild steel counterface. Under similar conditions, higher values of frictions are found with higher values of sliding velocity. In addition to that, wear rates show higher values with higher load and velocity conditions. Tribological characteristics are varied for different roughnesses of pin materials under experimental ranges of two influencing prameters.

The study examined the tribological characteristics of a ball-on-disc type sliding friction joint operating in air and in a vacuum under conditions of technically dry friction. The test elements included discs made of 100Cr6 steel without coating, with an anti-wear TiN coating, and a low-friction MoS2/Ti coating, and bearing balls made of 100Cr6 steel and Al2O3 as counter-samples. The tribological properties of the studied friction joint were evaluated based on changes in the coefficient of friction, the intensity of linear wear, the ball wear diameter, and the appearance of worn surfaces. The environment of the friction joint was found to have a significant effect on the tribological characteristics of the studied friction pairs.

The article presents experimental data on the effect of microarc oxidation parameters on the thickness and structure of the MAO-coating and its tribological characteristics in friction against bronze. The appli- cation of thick antifriction coatings by the MAO-method on titanium alloys has been developed. The possibility of using MAO-coatings of high thickness in sliding friction units was investigated.
