At autonomous electricity grids Renewable Energy (RE) contributes significantly to energy production. Offshore resources benefit from higher energy density, smaller visual impacts, and higher availability levels. Offshore locations at the West of Crete obtain wind availability ≈80%, combining this with the installation potential for large scale modern wind turbines (rated power) then expected annual benefits are immense. Temporal variability of production is a limiting factor for wider adaptation of large offshore farms. To this end multi-generation with wave energy can alleviate issues of non-generation for wind. Spatio-temporal correlation of wind and wave energy production exhibit that wind and wave hybrid stations can contribute significant amounts of clean energy, while at the same time reducing spatial constrains and public acceptance issues. Offshore technologies can be combined as co-located or not, altering contribution profiles of wave energy to non-operating wind turbine production. In this study a co-located option contributes up to 626 h per annum, while a non co-located solution is found to complement over 4000 h of a non-operative wind turbine. Findings indicate the opportunities associated not only in terms of capital expenditure reduction, but also in the ever important issue of renewable variability and grid stability.

Many bird species avoid traditional traps such as mist nets, thus alternative trapping methods are often needed. The Rufous Hornero (Furnariidae: Furnarius rufus) is one such species that was captured so far using conventional mist netting in rural areas or using nest-targeted traps, which risk nest damage and abandonment. Here we describe the novel rise-up mist-netting (RUM) protocol and its catchability for the wary and territorial Rufous Hornero in an urban area. The RUM trap allowed us quickly capturing 40 Rufous Hornero individuals even in paved parking lots and streets during the bird’s breeding period. The RUM is an active and targeted protocol that demands a single and quickly trainable field assistant. Therefore, it should also enable the capture of many understudied territorial but wary species. Moreover, it has enough mobility to fit studies in urban areas, and whenever researchers may deal with limited space and, at the same time, should reduce negative visual impacts to the general public of birds’ capturing and banding procedures.

Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to examine the impact of urban landscape from window views on quality of care for women who underwent Cesarean Section (C-section) in Taiwan. Design The participants were randomly assigned into 46 different hospital rooms to see the effects of various window views and daylight exposure on women’s recovery from post C-section care. Setting We carried out this study in the obstetrics departments of three tertiary hospitals located in two major cities of Taiwan: Taipei City and New Taipei City. Participants A total of 296 women who underwent C-sections and used patient-controlled analgesic (PCA) for pain control after their surgery during the 10-month data collection period were recruited for this study. Intervention The 46 different patient rooms provided diverse window views and different daylight exposure for the participants. Main Outcome Measures Recovery for the women who underwent C-sections in this study was defined as PCA usage and perceived pain measured by Brief Pain Inventory (BFI). Results Higher satisfaction of window view significantly decreased analgesic usage (P = 0.057), reduced the scores of overall perceived pain (P = 0.046), pain severity (P = 0.004), and ‘pain’s interference with relations with others, enjoyment of life, and mood (REM).’ (P = 0.095). Conclusions To maximize benefit and well-being of patients recovering from surgery, health care architects should design patient rooms to create maximum satisfaction with visual impacts and optimize window views. By doing so, it may decrease the use of pain medication and substantially reduce healthcare costs.

British Columbia forests have traditionally been managed for timber production. However, the increasing importance of nature-based tourism within the province means that forests also have significant value as a tourism resource. This can lead to conflicts between the forestry and tourism industries. This article examines tourism and forestry interests on Vancouver Island and discusses ways that forests could be managed to reduce negative impacts to the tourism industry. Eighteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with forestry and tourism industry professionals on Vancouver Island and elsewhere in British Columbia. Findings suggest that visual impacts associated with forestry can negatively impact tourism. It also appears that forestry receives a much higher priority than tourism when it comes to forest management, despite the vital importance of the tourism industry to the Vancouver Island economy. Displeasure over the lack of communication requirements between the forest industry and other stakeholders was also documented. The implementation of formal agreements between the two industries may potentially reduce conflicts between these two industries on Vancouver Island. Identification and special management of highly valuable tourism areas may also provide benefits to the Vancouver Island tourism industry.

Abstract In 1989 the State of Wisconsin created the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway, a new and unique institution to preserve and protect the aesthetic and environmental quality of the Riverway corridor. Performance standards that were developed for the Riverway include restrictions on timber harvesting. The debate over this intrusion into the management decisions of private forestland owners has sparked controversy and calls for compensation. We examined the range and severity of the economic impact of the harvest regulations on forestland owners by simulating several restricted and unrestricted timber management scenarios. What one considers a "cost" of the regulations depends critically upon what it is assumed landowners would do in the absence of the regulations. We estimated these costs by measuring returns from regulated management against returns from two possible "benchmarks," one involving a diameter limit harvest and the other a selectively marked thinning. The economic impact is greater for the diameter limit alternative, and greater in the Bluff Zone along the ridge line where visual impacts are more easily seen from the river, than along the hillsides. The impact typically fell below the threshold of 20% of property value that is incorporated into most compensation proposals currently being debated in the state and federal legislatures. Two timber harvests that were exempt from the regulations came very close to meeting the performance standards. While the focus has been on the issue of compensation, the controversy basically is rooted in the deeper underlying differences in philosophy about where the balance lies between actions to promote the public interest and the rights of property owners to pursue their own interests. <p>Wind turbines are large-scale engineering infrastructures that may cause significant social reactions, due to the anticipated aesthetic nuisance. On the other hand, aesthetics is a highly subjective issue, thus any attempt towards its quantification requires accounting for the uncertainty induced from subjectivity. In this work, taking as example the Aegean island of Tinos, Cyclades, Greece, we present a stochastic-based methodology for evaluating the feasibility of developing wind parks in terms of their aesthetic impacts. At first, a field analysis is been conducted along with photographic surveying, 3D representation and the opinion of the target population regarding the development of wind parks across the island. Subsequently, the landscape transformations that will be caused from the wind turbines are assessed according to the theory of aesthetics, which are depicted by using suitable spatial analysis tools in GIS environment. The 3D representation images along with the maps are finally assessed through stochastic analysis, in order to quantify the visual impacts to the landscape and the nuisance to local community.</p>
