Our objective was to develop a process for recovering acetyl groups from industrial northeast hardwood chips. Extraction experiments showed that the white liquor charge of 6% effective alkali at 50°C and liquor-to-wood ratio of 4:1 leads to the complete extraction of acetyl groups from industrial hardwood chips. Electrodialysis was assessed as a technique for separating and concentrating sodium acetate from synthetic hardwood extract. Preliminary separation experiments using dilute sodium acetate showed that the sodium acetate can be concentrated up to approximately 24% by weight from an initial concentration of about 2% by weight. The effects of current density, feed concentration, electro-osmosis, and osmosis on the separation of sodium acetate were evaluated. Finally, selectivity experiments were performed to study the effect of various components of the white liquor on the separation of sodium acetate. Fully oxidized synthetic white liquor was used in selectivity experiments to avoid deleterious effects of Na2S. Selectivity experiments using synthetic oxidized white liquor showed a significant decrease in the separation efficiency due to the presence of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and sodium sulfate in the synthetic extract.

Bulang districts Batam Islands of  Riau province (Riau Islands), its consists of many islands with as well as having the potential diversity of coastal marine life in particular kinds of macro algae or seaweed. Conducted research aimed to determine the structure of macro- algal communities in the intertidal zone islands. The results of the identification of algal species found 16 species are: the Order of Chlorophyceae as 6 spesies; Order Phaeophyceae as 2 spesies; and Order Rhodophyceae as 8 spesies. The community structure at the five stations showed the highest values were found in the island of dominance Cicir (D ' = 0.79) , uniformity index values on Tengah Island (E ' = 0.99) , while the island Balak had the highest diversity index (H ' = 0.88) , with the abundance patterns of population structure on the island is pretty good Central . Results of correlation analysis of regression between IVI types of algae with the conditions of environmental quality suggests that there is a significance (Fhit ˃ F table and the value of r = > 90 %) between IVI algae Halimeda sp and Cryptarachne polyglandulosa at each station with a temperature parameter surface (⁰C) , depth temperature (⁰C) and pH values. Keywords : Algae, Community Structure, Important Value Index.

For decades, fabrication of semiconductor devices has utilized well-established etching techniques to create complex nanostructures in silicon. Of these, two of the most common are reactive ion etching in the gaseous phase and metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) in the liquid phase. Though these two methods are highly established and characterized, there is a surprising scarcity of reports exploring the ability of metallic films to catalytically enhance the etching of silicon in dry plasmas via a MACE-like mechanism. Here, we discuss a <u>m</u>etal-<u>a</u>ssisted <u>p</u>lasma <u>e</u>tch (MAPE) performed using patterned gold films to catalyze the etching of silicon in an SF<sub>6</sub>/O<sub>2</sub> mixed plasma, selectively increasing the rate of etching by over 1000%. The degree of enhancement as a function of Au catalyst configuration and relative oxygen feed concentration is characterized, along with the catalytic activities of other common MACE metals including Ag, Pt, and Cu. Finally, methods of controlling the etch process are briefly explored to demonstrate the potential for use as a liquid-free fabrication strategy.

Sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate (SCP) was applied to seven commercial catfish ponds in Mississippi to study the effects of treatment on fish flavor and pond ecology. The seven ponds were treated on alternate days in the morning with two doses of SCP at 55 kg hectare−1 (average depth 1-1.6 m). In three of the ponds, a potent 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) producing planktonic Oscillatoria chalybea-like species that was initially present was absent from the water column after treatment. In addition, the fish from two of these ponds were judged on-flavor 7 to 10 days after treatment. The off-flavor chemicals in three other ponds were diminished when measured seven days after treatment and fish were harvested from two of these ponds 10-14 days after treatment. The fish from the other two ponds were harvested 21 days after treatment. In the sixth pond, the predominant algal species was a 2-methylisoborneol producing O. chalybea-like species at 380 cells ml−1 and the treatment was ineffective. The treatment was most successful when off-flavor was less than two months duration and where application of the chemical was accomplished uniformly over the entire pond surface.
